There's a relatively famous web application called "I Write Like" (seen here: http://iwl.me/ ).
I used it once or twice a few months or a year ago, and having recently found it again, I decided to test out some of my latest writings on it.
So, I put it a part of a fic I'm currently working on, and it turns out, I write like...
Dan Brown
I was like, "Fuck this" immediately and copy and pasted another section of text.
Dan Brown
I was kind of getting a little worried at this point, so I copy and pasted the most recent part of the story, to see how it would turn out.
Stephanie Meyer
Now, I was really wondering what the hell was going on, and I searched through my other stories for something else that was new that I could use for this. So, I thought, "Ha, how could this turn out wrong?" and put in text from a lemon I had recently written.
Vladimir Nabokov

Unable to think of anything else I put in some text from The Manhattan Project II, and from that the machine deduced that I write like...
H.P. Lovecraft
That one was... a surprise, certainly. I do have to wonder what got that one... but at least it's not a shitty/horrific implications author, this time.

My original writing is, without fail, between Edgar Allen Poe and Earnest Hemingway. A weird duo to be compared to.
My fanfiction is apparently H.P. Lovecraft?

yeah okay, why not?
A piece of Necrophatasia, that story I said I would write years ago but keep putting off because I suck
>James Joyce
try me some Cradle Ark, because I have started more projects than I care to admit
>Arthur Clarke
that beast of a fanfic Promise netted me also...
>Arthur Clarke

mfw didn't know who Arthur Clark was.

Arthur C. Clarke is a legendary science fiction writer. Very famous and very skilled, but at the same time a bit of a stick-in-the-mud by today's standards.
But this all really shows that "I Write Like" isn't really to be trusted. :P

I posted a segment from a certain citrus-y bit I'm writing, and ironically enough I also got Vladimir Nabokov. :illya:
Another segment - this one from an RP post - netted me David Foster Wallace. That's actually pretty cool. A different story snippet also got me a David Foster Wallace.
Shiki Tohnno - Accidental Demon Hunter gets me HP Lovecraft. Must've been the funky concepts and the gritty violence.
Another one earned me L. Frank Baum. Ironically enough that was a section of the Xth Loop, with all the messed up happening of Madoka Magica blended into the Nasuverse.

Well considering I take a lot of concepts from science fiction it doesn't surprise me that I got a science fiction writer, I just had no bloody clue who the guy was.
but yeah, I just got Issac Asimov from a short story I wrote years ago. And Now Gertrude Stein...

I used to get cool writers like James Joyce (for porn I penned long, long ago) and Margaret Atwood.
Now I just get Dan Brown and Stephanie Meyer. :|

Servant Theseus from the Create-a-Servant thread got me Mary Shelley.
Rider!Herakles' Noble Phantasm got me H.P. Lovecraft.
One of my BL lectures got me H.P. Lovecraft.

I plugged one of my older chapters for Cooled Ambition and my entry for the Fic contest, got Dan Brown both times.
Guess my writing is fairly consistent. :/

My latest blog entry is Cory Doctorow.
The Murder Guide's Intro, Robery Louis Stevenson.
Unfinished Regalia Short Story is still Cory Doctorow.

Huh, I didn't think to input an actual academic essay. Apparently my bioethics final is like Cory Doctorow, my Kant final is like Edgar Allan Poe, my Education Analysis final is H.P. Lovecraft, a random short paper I wrote since I missed a quiz one day is like David Foster Wallace, and one of my random writing assignments for my Epistemology class put me like Arthur Conan Doyle.
APPARENTLY I DON'T EVEN GET ONE TRENDING AUTHOR. =____=;

I believe there's a thread like this in the Fanfic's section already. My old posties should still be there.
I wonder how this thing determines your writing style? Keyword-search maybe? It processes these things ridiculously fast, so it's got to be some kind of quick-search criteria.

Any mention of 'eldritch' or 'non-Euclidean gemometries' immediately = Lovecraft, then? :p
MZeroX
March 4th, 2012, 06:29 PM
If only that were true. That would imply that my Education Analysis final had those words in them. That'd be so good.

Well I do have a thing on common with him tho I doubt its the writing style.

Put in a bunch of short touhou fanfics:
ReimuXMarisa: Dan Browne
ReimuXSakuya: Stephen King
ReimuXSanae: Douglas Adams
ReimuXMima: L. Frank Baum
ReimuXRumia: William Gibson
ReimuXCirno: Kurt Vonnegut
Why yes I did write all of those in the same style.
Also found out something about the way it works - seems it looks for the first sign of a particular writer then ignores the rest. When I put all of them in together, I got Dan Browne, when I put all starting from Sakuya in, I got Stephen King.

I write like Chuck Palahniuk.
I don't even know who that is.
EDIT: I looked it up. It's the guy who wrote Fight Club.
EDITED EDIT: Also, I put in some other stuff. It turns out I also write like Oscar Wilde. Odd.
And then I put some erotica in there. It turns out it's still Chuck Palahniuk. Wow, I write porn like I write violence.

Pasted in the first bit I used for chapter one of Fellows and got Stephen King.
Then I plugged in the bit I did in chapter 3 based off the Shadow Girls and got Anne Rice.
Then I did the opening part for the next chapter of Rain and got Stephen King again.
Then I did the ending few paragraphs for the last chapter of Steel and got H.P. Lovecraft.
So apparently, a majority of the time I write like a suspense/horror writer.
