Wow, my high school is now requiring purchase of iPads...apparently from now on, textbooks will be included in a $550 textbook package that can be accessed from the iPad. Currently, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors only are required to have one, and I guess starting next school year, every student is required to have one.

In the FAQ section, there's a question about whether students can opt out of using an iPad, and the answer (paraphrased) is "No, because the full benefits of the iPad as an educational tool can only be gotten if the instructors AND the students are using the iPad."

If you compare the prices for owning an iPad and simply buying ebooks for four years, it turns out that it's much cheaper than buying textbooks every year. Also, the iPad is family/student owned, so once students graduate, they now have an iPad to use for college. It actually isn't that bad a deal.

That said, I'm not affected as I'm 7 years out of high school, lol.

Wow, this is a fun album review of one of my favorite piano CDs ever.


Great music and fine-quality sound, but BE FOREWARNED, folks --- THE RECORD-PRESS MOULD THAT WAS USED TO MAKE THIS ALBUM WAS SERIOUSLY DEFECTIVE (I know for certain that it was the fault of the original record-press mould because I have three brand-new copies of this same record, and they are all defective in the same way!), AND SO IT EITHER DIDN'T PRESS THE GROOVE-WIGGLES DEEPLY ENOUGH, OR ELSE SOME DODO FORGOT TO TURN UP THE VOLUME ON THE MASTER TAPE WHEN THE RECORD-MOULD WAS FIRST CUT! And so some of the music on the record is MUCH TOO FAINT, especially (wouldn't you know it!) the FIRST SELECTION, which is the FIRST MOVEMENT OF THE "MOONLIGHT" SONATA, which is of course THE MOST FAMILIAR PORTION OF THIS PIECE AND EVERYONE'S FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE ALBUM! So to hear this music at all, YOU HAVE TO TURN UP THE AMPLIFIER FULL-BLAST, AND EVEN THEN THE MUSIC IS STILL SO FAINT (extremely poor signal-to-noise ratio) THAT YOU GET A HORRID AMOUNT OF "NEEDLE-RUBBING-ON-VINYL" NOISE AND TURNTABLE-HUM --- TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR ENJOYABLE LISTENING. I would therefore suggest getting the modern CD (yeah, yeah, I know --- "the old records sound better", but NOT IN THIS CASE!!) re-release of this title [go to: [...]] ,,, I would assume that the original tape was taken out of the archives more recently and played again to make this CD, and so presumably the CD-recording team didn't make the same mistake this time of having the playback level too low. Let's HOPE so, anyway, eh??

Of course, any swinging you happen to be doing with your iPhone/iPod Touch is going to be a long shot from Dudamel's actual conducting, because operating the program depends on a simple upward/downward swing, but still.

So the "entrance march" called "Under the Double Eagle" used at the...well, entrance portion before Nonon's fight in Kill la Kill is apparently really popular in western military bands, other functions involving marching bands, and as an entrance march in Japanese school sports days/festivals. John Philip Sousa liked the march a lot and added it to his repertoire, which is probably how the piece made its way into the band repertoire in the United States. I remember reading some comments on tumblr in English about it being a choice of a lesser known piece, but that's probably just relative to western audiences, since many of the Japanese comments I've seen about it all boil down to "I remember this being played as the entrance march to our school sports festival!" I expect it got similar reactions from most Japanese people watching it.

Perhaps most interesting thing I've found regarding this piece is that it actually has at least one set of lyrics, which are as follows...

Reading Kill la Kill fanfiction, regarding pairings I don't support, in freaking Spanish. My current quest? See if this fanfic uses random Japanese words like anime fanfiction tends to do. So far, this fanfic only uses honorifics, which, to my normal habit of not reading Spanish fanfiction, looks really funky to me, but that's just a bias as an English speaker, lol. Also, it bugs me that Nonon and Satsuki are referred to by their first names, while Inumuta, Gamagoori, and Sanageyama are referred to by their last names.
