But if you think you'll use it later, buy; otherwise, rent.

Depends. Are you getting used or new books? You'll get shit for selling back used books, so renting used is pretty great. If there aren't any used books left, buy that sucker and pawn it off at the end of the term if you don't need it for another class. Never rent if it's a text for your area of study, stockpile those reference books.

And no, you can't save everyone.

Call another person to save one of them and you go save the other.
Barring that, throw a buoyant log or piece of wood to the complete stranger and save your pet.
If those two can't be done, it's either that you are stranded in a desert island, in which saving either one of them is moot already, or you're in the water too with no land on sight, in which you are also in trouble even if you can swim.

But the point isn't if you can do it, but that if you had the possibility to save one, who would you pick?
You pick one, but the other dies.
You cannot save everyone Ivan, it is a foolish ideal!
So you can't throw a log or anything of the like to the stranger if youre going to go for your pet.

The point here is not saving anyone, the point is trying to do so, regardless of failure or success. If it succeeds, good. If not, at least you can say "Well, I tried to. I'm sorry." If it looks like it's a one-choice question, at least put an effort in trying to go for both, so that you can't say that you didn't try.

But as for the log, you can save someone with that. I mean, lumberjacks used to let their cut logs float across the river as a means of transporting them. You can try to save the complete stranger by tossing a log or something buoyant for him to hold on to. He has hands. Then, save your pet. If the stranger holds on and is still floating with the log by the time you're done saving your pet, then swim back across him and save him. If not, then at least you tried.

Break raises a good point. Most animals can swim and quite well in most cases.

But yeah. I can't swim, so I'd let them both drown. Unless the water was under six feet and they were both somehow drowning in six feet of water, in which case I'd save the pet. I don't care about some random person and they are about to be dead so I don't care if they do hold a grudge.

One whom lives in a small mountain town and has never been within a hundred foot of more than three feet of water. Seriously, I've never even been near a pool with more than three feet of water. Now, I may actually be able to "swim" as in keep above water but in a situation where another person whom may be able to swim and a animal which should be able to swim are drowning.... I would assume my meager not drowning skills may be lacking.

Gaia

I have lived most of my childhood by the sea, and I can't really swim. I wouldn't drown immediately, but I can't swim 200 meters continuously (50 of that on my back), which is the deifinition of "can swim" in this country (or actually in all Nordic countries).

Edit: Don't know if I could do that if my life depends on that. Don't really wanna try... :p

I don't think so. But it has to be in "deep" water, so you can't stand in the middle. I need to stop and stand, because I can't really float, so it doesn't matter if there's time limit or not.

Swimming is a teachable skill, personal moral decisions can be weird. I think break's reaction is logical. Especially since if you cannot swim, you cannot save a drowning person. Saving someone first requires having the skill to do so; otherwise, you're just compounding the problem. If swimming is as widespread a local skill for him as he says, then confusion about someone not being able to swim ought to be a common reaction. Saving a drowning person requires moral decision making against reflection of personal skill and judgment that your actions aren't impeding someone more capable. Auto-reactions to saving people says something about a person's moral character development, while confusion about common skills is just says something about normalcy. It really isn't that odd, especially in a forum discussion setting, rather than an actual instance of shit going down.

What do you get anyway? Not much. It's probably a little my fault. Since this is pre-Persona 3 you have to make ALL your Personas from scratch. No fusion, just slow, painful bartering that has at best a 35% success rate to get a set amount of Tarot Cards and, if I'm lucky enough to run into a demon I made a pact with, some Free Cards(turns out that's necassary since some Arcana can't be obtained through demon contacts.)

Der Ritter

It's annoying because you need to use specific characters and specific actions just to get them Happy or Eager. What's worse is that sometimes they'll get chatty and ask you questions, and if you click the wrong answer they'll get pissed quick. And from there it is a fine line between getting a crap ton of Tarot and Free cards, and having a pact with a particularly powerful demon that you may never see again dissolved instantly.

Not long ago I got into a fun argument with a friend about games having grinding and other such things. I argued it was a cheap system to pad out playtime and that it diminished the story by interrupting and spreading it out. Meanwhile my friend argued it added a sense of accomplishment by way of working to overcome obstacles.

Der Ritter
August 25th, 2014, 05:58 AM
For the most part it is a little both. Most enemies like bosses are just to stronk to fight at whatever level your at, so grinding is a good way to get to a point where you're either strong enough to not get un-alived too quickly, or to be able to kick it's ass to next week. On the other hand it gets a little repetitive to face a generic palette swap enemy over and over, especially when you've essentially reached a level where they're less "OMG mostuuuuuurs!!!1" and more cliche cannon fodder.

04satsujinki40
August 25th, 2014, 06:20 AM
It depends on the game. I think JRPGs that look anime-ish tend to make you grind. But the Souls kind doesn't really do that, since it's more based on skill than levels.

But grinding in the Forest was fun. It felt good to murder Alvina's clan again and again. LOL.

Sequence, ordering.

From bonfire, start with the sorcery guy. Then the invisible thief guy. Then move to mace girl. Then finally the Spider Shield and axe guy. If you do it correctly, it will always be one-on-one.

Just 2H a really good weapon. You could kill them in three to four hits with a good weapon. Or you could go for awesome route and parry like a boss. Just like Koji said. I think he was telling me that you can just parry them or practice parrying there in the Forest or both.

To me, the Iron Golem was both underwhelming and laughably easy even without Tarkus. Ornstein and Smough were gave a stronger impression. Then again, it could be that Annor Londo needed a boss fight suiting its gravitas.

I do have to agree with you. It makes sense to have Ceaseless Discharge be a boss that can be trivially be defeated since he's simply some monster mourning over his sister's corpose. Meanwhile, it's hardly becoming of the boss guarding access to Anor Londo be so easy to dispatch by simply making it fall down. And even if you don't cheese the Iron Golem, you can still pretty much hug its legs and be beyond the range of all but the stomping and grab attacks.

Still, I do recall one time when I was grabbed by the Iron Golem while I was being careless, and it thrown me right out of the arena. It was rather funny.

Trying to fight Ceaseless Discharge without making him fall to his death is a pain. If that exploit doesn't exist(and it doesn't even make sense. How can the guy who flooded Izalith with Lava die from falling into it from just a few yards?) it would have taken me a lot of tries to beat him.

Lol. Maybe the Iron Golem was hungry or something.

And I agree with you on the Ceaseless Discharge issue, too. He was a brother who got careless and got turned into a monster. Makes sense for him to be easily defeated.

But a guardian to Anor Londo has to be really strong. I mean, Gwyndolin was desperate enough to make some illusion of a sun and of daylight. Like you said, Anor Londo haz zome gravitaz.

He isn't too difficult to defeat in a less cheesy way. All you have to do is stick close to him, and you will be beyond the range of those annoying fire attacks. You would just have to dodge and attack his arms.

As for the whole falling thing being an exploit, I don't consider it as such if we're going by the definition of an exploit being an unintentional way of doing something in the game. The bottomless box glitch would be an exploit under that definition, but the game designers specifically programmed in the helpless state that Ceasless gets put in should he attempt to attack you when you're close to the fog gate.

And just because he flooded Izalith with lava doesn't mean he's immune to it. If you look at the Charred Ring description, it notes that the brother got disfigured due to how he was oozing lava. This seems to indicate that he isn't immune to the effects of lava.

You are Lancer. A mostly free spirit, you do what you want, how you want, when you want. You are driven by a strong set of personal morals. Sometimes the hero, sometimes the villain, you don't care what others think. And you might not be afraid to strut around in a skin-tight blue suit. Awwww yeah.

It makes sense. I am lazy and carefree. I don't how strong my morals are, but I have some. And yep, I don't care what others and society think. (Lol. "Sometimes the hero. Sometimes the villain." Lol. yeah, except that having the ring lets someone walk on lava for an extended period of time, while Ceaseless lived with lava most of his life without the ring. While not completely immune(lava still disfigures him) I don't understand why a dip into lava(which he had been standing on and surrrounded with) would kill him.

Then again, I have no idea how hitting a lava monster with a sword will kill one. Or how someone doesn't combust into flames due to mere proximity.

Btw i defeated Priscilla, didnt manage to slice off her tail yet though.

How could you! Any way, if you want her tail, aim for it first. Open the fight with the the strongest hit you can and aim for the tail. A +5 Lightning Zweihander or a 15+ Zweihander with Crystal Magic Weapon, Sunlight Blade, or Darkmoon Blade could do the trick. Couple that with power within and you might be able to get it in one hit.

Yeah i like the Queel sisters too.Btw im at Smough and Ornlag now too, didnt defeat them yet though. My current tactic is to block and combust, but i only almost managed to kill Ornleigh yet...Anyone got some tips?

Get some buddies, go ganking. I would help, but I play it on an Xbox so I can't. Other wise, summon Solaire, let him aggro the two. While their busy murdering him, flank one(Smough easier to flank for me) and kill him. If Solaire's still alive for the combination, just keep flanking, but beware of the electric butt slam. If Solaire's dead or close to dying, dodge a lot, beware of electric butt slam, and shoot sorceries or pyromancies as you will. Also get a shield with 100% Phys Block and decent Lightning Block

incest increases rates of recessive genetic disorders being realized. makes it harder for character creation of a universally adorable daughter. if you can't dote on an adorable future daughter, you're doing vanilla love stories wrong, imho.

Break
August 27th, 2014, 01:01 AM
To be fair, its not like it guarantees a genetic disorder, it only raises the chances. Of course, the more you do it, the higher the chance for disfigured offspring; Shiki would probably look like Quasi Modo if it werent for Nasugenetics.

Yes But then magic doesn't really work like that in Dark Souls. If their is a three they could go for a "Night is fallen" theme and replay pyromancy with cryomancy, maybe, but otherwise it just doesn't really fit and any niche it fills can be filled by crystals.

Stuff like that would work exceptionally well.

Huh, what console is 7th Dragon for?

There are three games.
the first is for the DS, and the other two are for the PSP.
None of them were localized, so they're in full japanese. Although there IS a translation patch for the DS game.

Crystal Sorcery is endgame, like Chaos Pyromancy. You need to do the "quest" with the sorcery trainer.

Now Dks2... I forsook my love of magic and just went sword and shield.

Yes. The gutter was hell. I rarely fell to my death there but the collapsing ceilings annoyed me. And the darkness was just annoying.

Black Gulch wasn't that bad, except for the toxic shooting statues everywhere.

Wrath of Gods is okay if you plan on playing PvP in Sen's, but since pvp is dying out in DS1 not much use for it really.

Darkmoon Blade and Sunlight Blade are OK miracles. Wrath of the Gods and Great Magic Barrier are great if you want to emulate the Rock

One of the coolest abilities in the game is the Gravelord Sword Dance miracle. Not horrible powerful but cool enough and powerful even for a non-faith build. I had a lot of fun with a Gravelord build and dang if that sword isn't awesome.

The build I'm using right now for DkS2 is versatile. I have lots of goodies from the four magic areas. The only thing I don't have is Wrath of the Gods and Denial, and probably a few more stuff maybe? I have Focus Souls but can't use it yet. Mah INT is only 53 and it needs 60.

But I'm dumping points into strength coz I wanna 1H that Black Knight Greatsword while using it with a shield. Then I can go Shield and Sword Knight Modo.

I like my build. Good for co-op support. As long as I try not to get hit. My health is low.

To be fair, Nito is actually one of the easier bosses. You'll know what I'm talking about once you try to go up against something like the Four Kings.

Though speaking of places of the gutter, I wished there were actually places in Dark Souls II that were as dark and foreboding as the Tomb of Giants. Pity that lighting engine wasn't able to get put in.

I've dicked around with a few builds. With the exception of DLC stuff, I have everything.

Faith builds are just plain op: Sunlight Spear hitting for huge dmg and the Lightning Drangleic Sword, or later the Lightning Defenders Great Sword with its S Faith scaling are power houses. Not to mention healing.

Pyromancy: Not too strong, not too weak but seeing how some important bosses are fire themed and have decent fire resistances.... The only boss where it stands out is the Dark Stalker and even then Sunlight Spear blitz will do just as well. Never used it in PVP but I never had any problem dodging all of it's stuff.

Sorcery: Even having mained sorcery in Dark Souls 1, I just dislike it in Dks2. The new stuff, while looking nice, is unwieldy or not very powerful. Old stuff is weaker. Really Light Spears are just better, you get way more survivability in a Faith build, and you get great physical weapons.

Hexes: Never used them. My builds never had room for INT and Faith and I'm not really into hybridizing them.

Sword and Shield is still wonderful, I rarely use anything else. Although whips are fun to mess around with. Never really got into duel wielding, kind of soured on it after I realized a duel dagger build was pretty useless.
