So I'm looking at some screenshots from the No Game No Life anime which state that Sora and Shiro have a communication disorder. I really, really do not believe that they do, lol. If anything, it's probably the stereotypical image of a hikikomori leading to a misconstrual of a communication disorder.

Severe codependency. Perhaps exaggeratedly.

That's a good point. I had forgotten about that.

That said, get them together, and it all disappears. Of course it's anime, and what am I doing trying to science an anime, but it's not really characteristic of a communication disorder. It appears more to be a personality disorder.

Reminds me of a psychology joke I once heard. Somewhere between washing your hands multiple times a day and washing your hands until they bleed is a line, it is our job to find that line.

Joke as it may be, it's still pretty true about the process of diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

Of course, we don't have the power to diagnose based only on videos, but as a speech-language pathologist in training, I don't see any evidence of a true communication disorder in our NGNL protagonists. I would be more prone to refer them to a psychologist for the separation issues than a speech-language pathologist for a communication issue. Wouldn't know for sure without a full evaluation though.

But hey, sciencing anime, especially one as...out there as NGNL, leads to nowhere good. XD

Well I haven't actually seen the show so I can't commit on if they portray it well or at all but considering the slow taking of physiology in Japan, I'm more surprised it was mentioned at all.

A "magic" particle. It didn't work so there's obviously no proper title for it. I'd mess with its properties or states to try to get it to work at doing something, anything, other than not exist, and I wasn't successful.

I once tried to bs an explanation for how "magic" could work or at least not violate conservation of energy in my writing.

I settled on mana being the original state of energy and entropy was the process of energy within the system degrading, with each form of energy releasing mana and the lowest form of energy being mana, which was non-reactive unless observed. The mana could be observed by magic users, fed on by nature spirits, etc and the observation, feeding, ect could impart how it should behave and force it to take the behavior of other types of energy and become functionally identical to those types of energy, reentering it into the process of entropy.

Probably sounds stupid but it wasn't bad for a dumbarse sixteen year old with vague knowledge about the ideas being used there.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Original state of energy would be origin of universe energy, or free energy of the big bang. If you focus on the original state of energy portion, mana is no different from normal energy.

If you focus on entropy degrading it, and having mana just be another type of particle, then you can go a little farther. Entropy isn't a process, it's a mere fact. If there is anything happening whatsoever, there is loss of order and energy just due to the fact that it physically exists. You can call it an imperfect existence or whathaveyou, but the net entropy of any real system is zero or greater, with the zero entropy systems being completely stagnant and uninteresting due to lack of anything happening. But back to the particle. Let's look at the possibilities of it. That particle is super scarce or non-existent due to it not being reportedly observed ever; that particle can only interact with others of its kind (so normal humans who can't interact with it, along with normal matter, are not aware of its existence); that particle is a building block of all normal particles and as such is present everywhere but does not interact in any interesting way; that particle is a building block of some particles and causes certain reactions (such as the plus and minus interactions of electrons or protons) but due to regular interaction that has been recorded, it is considered a normal force; that particle is similar to light, massless but energetic, and intrinsically tied to space-time; that particle is space-time itself; that particle interacts only with space-time curvature, only indirectly effecting things.
If we look at the scarce ones, then even if magic exists, the collection of mana to perform it is a task unsuited to mortal beings restricted to a physical world. Non-interacting particles do exist, but they are largely meaningless for any physical application. They are interesting in that they necessarily exist in order for math to properly reflect reality, but beyond that, they're pretty meaningless. The light/space-time correlates are the more interesting ones. If it is massless but energetic, there is still room to effect matter via interactions like the photoelectric effect. Still, it'd probably just be considered to be light, rather than magic, if it was observed that way. If it was space-time itself, or one of the components of space-time, that'd be pretty cool. Too bad space-time is our default highest observable dimension set, so seeing any components of it directly is pretty much a lost cause. Also, it'd probably get filed away under graviton particles rather than mana if it had any predictable set. Same argument for interaction with space-time only, it'd be a graviton. Another possibility is some sort of higher-order field that interacts with the probability field of a wave function. Still, every field has an associated particle, so the properties of the particle need to be parsed out. However, if there was one that could mess with probabilities, then something like marble phantasm might be possible, just not to the extent that Arc uses it.

Well, even if we just assumed there are mana somehow, interaction with known sentient beings would be difficult in its own way. There needs to be an organ that is able to interact with the mana within any physical sentient being that is able to, as a whole, interact with mana. Every field is associated with a particle, and these interact among themselves. If a person, for example, could control mana, there needs to be a controllable source within the person to alter external fields or particles. Spirits and mana interacting wouldn't be a problem, since you can say that spirits are made up of mana or something, and something interacting with itself is pretty standard. Though that would beg the question as to whether or not human have a spirit, or where the spirit is housed, so it's kinda messy.

Closest I could get is still probability interacting, but that still doesn't let physical things do things beyond what they're capable in any given system, just enforcement of a desired outcome even in quantum situations. And even then, there is still a question of how it'd even begin to work. =/

Interestingly the modern ideas of magic, mana, ect are very recent. For a long time hermetic magic was the norm and functioned off the idea of rituals effecting a system for whatever reason, be it influencing gods/spirits to act on the persons behalf or slightly more recently, screwing with probability.

Interestingly the modern ideas of magic, mana, ect are very recent. For a long time hermetic magic was the norm and functioned off the idea of rituals effecting a system for whatever reason, be it influencing gods/spirits to act on the persons behalf or slightly more recently, screwing with probability.
More like obviously. The influence of science attributing causes down to particles and being successful in predictions forces other ideas to change around it. Ideas in the same vein, that is, prediction and/or compliance with willful agents' desires, will be effected as the accuracy of science forces a paradigm shift in the meta-cognition of the masses. If magic or anything else that deals with prediction or enforcement of will wants to survive in an era steep in technological advances due to science, it needs to adapt a science-like meta-frame to seem even remotely convincing. Magic particles and the such are a natural thought consequence of science's success.

This is perhaps the greatest exercise I've seen in a language book. This is from Complete Babylonian by Martin Worthington. Setting aside the fact that it's not complete because it doesn't teach you even how to read basic cuneiform, let alone ANY cuneiform (despite the fact that the book says "Everything you need to read and understand")...

Most of the exercises in this book are of the type "normalize, then translate." Normalization is the process by which you convert translilterated Babylonian which is marked up in all sorts of fun ways (hyphens, Assyrian readings as opposed to Babylonian ones, etc.) into something that looks more "modern language-like."

So the 3rd sentence in exercise 11.4 is
ur-ki pi-te-ma (pitê-ma 'open!') ku-zu-ub-ki lil-qé (lilqe 'so he can take')

The normalized version of this sentence is
ūrki pitê-ma kuzubki lilqe

Which has the translation
"Open your vulva, so he can take your sexiness"

Speaking of technological advancements and magic, I just recalled some interesting tidbits from Warhammer 40k.

The Warp is a mix between a parallel dimension (which can at times overlap with our dimension, possibly permanently if directed.) used for something like hyperspace, the afterlife, and is the source of magic/psychic powers (Used more or less interchangeably.). How exactly it functions as a afterlife is a little unclear but the basics that have been explained are that emotion is a physical force there. It appears the soul (And life in general.) may originate from it as well as be linked to it and fully return there in at least some circumstances.

Now how exactly magic works is one of two ways and it may be both or either. Some people have psychic powers, why exactly is unexplained but it does seem to be a stronger link to the Warp, these people use the connection to either: Temporarily overlap the Warp with our dimension and allow the effect to follow the laws of the Warp or The connection with the Warp allows the effect to be formed in the Warp before being pulled into our dimension.

I'm curious how viable the idea actually is.

Wait, what in that first sentence is "The Warp" a mix between? A parallel universe and what else? The afterlife? That seems like what you're trying to say, but it's hard to mix the two. Very hard. Let's start there. A mundane parallel universe should be "higher-dimensionally" closer to reality than one where completely off the wall shit is possible. Next if we assume that communication to a parallel universe is possible, we must also establish that a vast amount of energy is need to connect to the parallel universe, at least initially, if not continually. A single burst connection is probably the easiest to establish, since you could just have a black box fantasy device that can harness energy from an artificially exploded star once or something. Constant energy expenditure to maintain trans-dimensional communication seems more likely to me, but harder to maintain in reality, but I'll suspend that disbelief for the sake of argument. Anyways, what I meant when I said it's hard to mix the two, I mean a physical world and, as your implying, a spiritual world. The afterlife would be a non-physical conscious experience, correct? This is what I'm thinking it needs to be, since it occurs after consciousness is no longer viable in a physical sense, and non-conscious non-physical existence seems literally imaginary and not for the sake of anyone but the still-living who can't cope.

So we have a need to connect a physical universe with a parallel dimension that is so far detached that it exists as a buffet of non-physical existences that still are able to interact with physical existences. I honestly would think any connection between the two worlds is impossible due to the energy constraints. First one side would need to make the effort to go searching in higher dimensional space-time (which cannot be rightfully observed due to limitations as four-dimensional beings) and locate a parallel dimension. Then one needs to go beyond the close parallel dimensions that would literally just be the same fucking world with one physical constant or so slightly different, and traverse all the way to one where none of the searching side's physical laws even matter. Then go a step further from there, and find one where searching side's physical laws don't matter, but what searching side considers non-physical things are able to influence searching side's physical things. After all of that, then one would need to go and actually connect the dimensions, which is more or less the creation of another set of dimensions, and then extend this connection all the fucks way to the magic realm, where chemical reactions and emergent impressions translate into external force itself.

THEN, after connecting the dimensions, somehow or another causing the entire living populace to actually interact with the alter dimension forces. Even if the dimensions themselves are connected, if the physical living agents of the first world don't have the internal capacities to utilize the alter dimension's physical laws (aka esp or magic), then there is no point in the energy expenditure. However, the game assumes that people do have that capacity, the capacity to innately dabble into the forces of a different dimension set many dimensional orders higher than their base set (since they can't discard their base set of three spatial and one time). So now we have people that are able to innately control dimensional order 12 to fuck knows maybe dimensional order 30 to them, but still can't even perceive the 5th-11th order of dimensions they live in? Yeah, I don't think so.

The only way it'd work is not if there is an alter parallel dimension that is somehow connected, but actually if it's just a different dimension set altogether from anything mundane to us. In other words, rather than two dimension sets connected with one of them somewhat resembling our physical world, it makes more sense if there is just one dimension set where there are way more rules to the universe than ours. In that single universe, magic is a fundamental force, and some people would have a talent for processing that more efficiently than others.

It's really annoying that a word could be written a whole bunch of ways in Babylonian. Like, I'm sure once I get used to it it won't be such a problem, but when a word can be written a billion ways, it's annoying at least in the beginning. For example, take the word for "king," which is "sharrum" in Old Babylonian.

This could possibly be expressed in the cuneiform syllabary as:
shar-rum
shar-ru-um
sha-ar-rum
sha-ar-ru-um
sha-rum
sha-ru-um

Philly is supposed to have this problem generally. I don't live in the city proper but us suburbanites still do it with certain words ("ixplain," "ixcept," itc.).

I didn't give a full explanation earlier, but what I described is actually a merger phenomenon in which the sounds "e" and "i" merge into "i" when it occurs before a nasal sound, that is, "m" "n" or "ng." What you describe isn't a problem, but a different phenomenon which is one of the big characteristic features of vowels in general English. We tend to reduce vowels in unstressed positions to either "i"s or schwas (an "uh" type sound, as in the "a" in "win a bet"). In any case, neither the e/i merger nor the e->i/schwa reduction are problems. They're just characteristic of whatever dialect of English you speak.

And now I'm in grad school, and APA is freaking everywhere, so I've memorized how to do the citations.

You'll get it.

For some reason this excerpted dialogue from the song "Ek En My Vlerk" by Robbie Wessels and Bok van Blerk fascinates me.

Robbie Wessels: Ek is jou vlerk; jy is my vlerk. (I'm your 'vlerk;' you're my 'vlerk.')
Bok van Blerk: Van Blerk! My "van" is "van Blerk!"
Robbie Wessels: Nee, man. Ek praat van 'n wingman. 'n Vlerk. (No, man. I'm talking about a wingman. A "vlerk.")

Only because apparently it seems possible to refer to one's last name beginning with "van" as one's "van." But then again, I'm versed in whether "van" is considered a part of the last name in Afrikaans.

Uhm, dude...

I's not something confusing. It's all about context. If the character says something about a person in the screen--which makes it sound like they're talking about an actual person--then it's live action. You know, just like how real people says stuff about the people on TV. If they say it's anime they're watching, then it's not live action.

I know. But I took it from the visual context of the whole question without the spoken context.

In other words: In an anime show, there is no difference between live-action and anime, until said otherwise.

Well how about this: Do anime characters look the way they're drawn?

If Shirou and Rin thought maybe Archer could have been a knight of the Round Table, does that mean he just happens to not look unambiguously Asian, or is it that in the Nasuverse there's no way of telling what part of the world someone's from by their facial features?

Just a few minutes ago, I ended up starting a machine with nothing in it because it was having an error when I tried to start it, and then of course when I took my clothes out and tried to start it just for kicks cause I thought I figured out how to open it while a cycle is on, it started. It's now washing nothing, lol.

Luckily, I was able to redirect my payment to another machine, cause the payment machine detected that I was having trouble with the original machine. So no money wasted. It's still funny that it's washing nothing though.
