The former. I defined the wrong direction as negative, so even though I did the problem right I basically got half-credit for everything.

The short answer questions in the beginning of the test were the only thing that saved me from a straight 50%. :(

honestly, if the error was in the definition stage, you actually did the logic properly, and the negative wasn't in opposition to already given premises, you still would have gotten a correct answer in the bounds you had defined. so the error was either in conflict with already set givens, or you did mess up at a different part, but still early on. Did you guess wrong for the direction of a magnetic field or something?

I did intern in a biomedical lab one summer. As much as I enjoyed getting some hands-on experience, it also cemented my conviction that I wanted nothing to do with biology in my future.

Having to homogenize stool once is plenty for a lifetime.

Teaching it, I get to review my basics, reconsider optimum shapes without individual game biases needing to be taken into account, and have an excuse for playing with my tiles.

Casually, I can just try to go fast and treat every draw like I'm pulling from a gatcha or something. Each draw has the rush of a new chance for moving on. Getting the big bursts regardless of casual or serious always feels good.

Seriously, paying attention to others discards, personal habits, and comparing apparent shapes and sequences to simulations in my head requires a lot of effort, but it feels so good when I'm right. There's also the real satisfaction of not ever getting hit by a ron, when playing seriously successfully. If everyone was playing seriously, and I won without having ever been hit, it feels so damn good. I'm still not at a level to manipulate others points in ways other than taking them or dealing in intentionally while knowing with certainty how much I'll lose, so there's still room for the joy of getting better, too.

More random than chess, but the strategy is real.

Think of it as a cross between gin rummy and poker, with a necessary player limit of 3-4.

The scoring system in japanese/reach mahjong (like in saki) is stupidly complicated compared to some of the other scoring systems, but it does use less random bonus tiles depending on rules, so it decreases the random big hands somewhat (so in turn increases the amount of strategy percentage-wise).

That's why a full chan is rarely played in modern mahjong. Most people don't have time to play a minimum of a 16 hands, that's also likely to run up to about 30 rounds due to bonus rounds and washouts. Reduced maximum point values in modern mahjong also make it easier to prematurely end a game by sending a player below 0 points. Current games generally take 30 minutes to three hours, depending on the amount of derp or lockdown play. You posted earlier about Saki; the tourney rules the team battle is using is two hanchan per player--so effectively a single chan per player. That's 5 full chans per team, and they allot the entire day to the match, don't they? They wake up at 7am, start playing at 8am or 9am, get a lunch break after the second or third player, and then the play well into the night. The fluff between matches is like 10 minutes to an hour depending on short breaks or lunch, so its definitely around there.

Ritz may not go into much actual mahjong detail, but she does seem familiar with the game somewhat. I'm pretty sure she lost a bet and did the Saki one shot as a punishment, and then got surprised when they published her.

It takes nowhere as long online. There isn't any time devoted to setting up the table, draws and discards are done automatically, point calculation is handled by the machine so there isn't any need for that, points are automatically shifted so there isn't a need to count and hand over point sticks, bonuses are applied automatically, and turns are timed. You can literally get a few games in depending on rules within a half hour.
