I think I recall reading somewhere that a member of the Royal family is considered ineligible for the crown if they are Catholic at any point in their life even if they convert. Do you know if this is true? Also, how do most British citizens feel about the Royal Family?
As the monarch is also the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, it's distinctly problematic if they're not CoE themselves. So the religious requirement remains in force. Lately we updated the laws so they stop being so specifically anti-Catholic, and we do now allow marriage to a non-CoE person. (I'm also reasonably sure, looking at that Act, that you're allowed to have converted to being CoE).

The Royal Family currently enjoys strong but not overwhelming popular support, much of it tied to the Queen, though Harry, William, Kate, George and Charlotte are all also well-regarded (as is Zara, though she's rather farther off in the succession). Republicans are forced to admit they can't expect to make headway while Elizabeth still rules, and as Charles gets older and older, and his potential reign gets shorter and shorter, they are starting to have to fix their hopes on George managing to be awful at some point.

~10 Mbps is pretty okay as long as it's actually reliable and doesn't dip to like 2 like at my old place.

Connecting 4+ devices is also not a very good idea if you want that speed to be stable.

I updated that post so it more answers your question and not the question I thought you were asking, btw. :p

Though I'm not really versed in the Queen's duties, the religious parts of it that I remember are mostly inherited historical trapping which actually apply more to our political system: for example, the formal conclusion to her speech at the opening of Parliament is "I pray that the blessing of Almighty God may rest upon your counsels." Overall, however, her religious role is just as atrophied as her political one: theoretically significant but practically irrelevant.

The Orthodox churches, in culture, ritual, theology, etc, are markedly different from the Church of Rome, it's not really that close at all. Especially for American/European Catholicism.

Its technically a protestant sect, although the whole reason England started its own sect was because the pope wouldnt let Henry divorce his wife back when it was catholic.

Protestantism is so varied that nailing that down decisively is pretty difficult. Really depends on what you highlight as significant, I suppose. In the end, if you're willing to take the loss of the Pope as read, despite how central he and his descent from Peter are to Catholicism, I would probably say it leans more in that direction that to a given 'average' Protestant sect.

Historically and presently, the Church has tended to see itself as a middle way between the two, avoiding the corruption of old Catholicism while shying from the radicalism of reformative Protestantism. Though I can't pin the the Church of England itself down without deeper research, there are some parts of the Anglican Communion which do explicitly describe themselves as 'Catholic and Protestant', drawing on both strains.

As for how that operates in real life, the immediate differences I can think of from the top of my head are the whole Latin debate (since mostly dropped by Catholicism too), lesser veneration of the saints, non-literal transubstantiation, and a moderately more comfortable attitude toward female and homosexual priests (particularly among the House of Laity, while the House of Clergy is still rather divided). On the other hand, the Church of England still retains an episcopate and arch-episcopate, a supreme head, and much of the Catholic general tradition (as opposed to doctrine) including its pomp and circumstance. It also still lays a lot of weight on the old Church Fathers. So judge as you will.

this isn't minimal

Filioque was made a problem for political reasons and to force the schism
The catholic dogmata about original sin were made in response to protestant heresies and the orthodox didn't have their own council because the reformation didn't really come in contact with them

Are most English and Christian citizens actually a part of the Church of England? If so, is it also practiced often throughout the rest of the UK?
Most Christians in England are CoE, yes. There are separate Churches in the Anglican Union for Scotland, Wales, NI, and other countries, despite the fact that the CoE is still officially established in the UK as a whole, so that we have the (dis-established) Church in Wales, the Church of Scotland, the Church of Ireland, &c. I'm honestly not sure about the breakdown of Christianity in those parts of the state, because they all have their own particular historical circumstances and I haven't looked up the data.

That said, even those identifying as CoE - or Christian of whatever flavour - probably don't go to Church every Sunday. Christmas and Easter if you're lucky. Probably the adjective most associated with Christianity in Britain is 'comfortable', hence Eddie Izzard's sketch where adherents of the Church are offered either Death or ... Cake.

As to the actual prevalence of Christianity among British citizens, there are a few arguments over statistics, but Christianity accounts for a bit under 50% of the population, irreligion for the vast majority of the rest, and then Islam at somewhere north of 5% rounding out the significant parts of the religious population.

E: I apparently cannot write a post today without making a significant alteration afterward. Sorry.

And it's worth remembering that, depending on who you ask, somewhere between about a third and a half of British citizens are straight-up irreligious too.
In the area I live in just about everybody attends Church on Sunday and Wednesday. Are you irreligious if you don't mind my asking?

There you go, have a look back. :p

In the area I live in just about everybody attends Church on Sunday and Wednesday. Are you irreligious if you don't mind my asking?
Personally, yes, I am irreligious. We spent most of our early life as a Catholics, going to church with our dad, who is relatively committed by British standards just because he does go to church on a Sunday - in a year of thirty at school, I think there was one other child whose parents did the same, for example. (Mum, while claiming to be CoE, does nothing whatsoever religious, though I think she would still profess belief in God if pressed). At thirteen Dad decided it was time that we, as teenagers, a) should get more sleep on a Sunday morning and b) should make the choice of religion for ourselves, and stopped waking us up to come. I still thought of myself as Catholic for a few years afterward, but gradually found myself dissatisfied with a religious view of the universe and of ethics.

After university meant that I had to do some modern philosophy of religion in the course of studying Plato, I officially gave up on trying to work through the dense arguments back and forth about the logical proofs for/against God, and simply took up the position that I should live my own life whether or not any deity or deities existed, and to take the consequences of that as they came.

Honestly, I've never openly discussed it with them since, nor has my brother as far as I'm aware; I have no idea if they even know. It's simply not a topic that comes up: Mum doesn't care, and Dad meant it when he said we were free to work it all out for ourselves. I expect I've made passing comments which indicate it, because I don't deliberately hold back the information, but there's never been a full-on religious discussion in our family within the past ten years. (My unwillingness to come out to them does shape some of those passing comments, however, so I've probably dropped fewer and quieter hints than I might have). At best, they should be aware that I haven't converted to some stringent other religion because I haven't changed my habits, and I'm not an evangelical because I came home with some Baptist literature a rather more zealous friend had given me, and was amused/embarrassed by it. But that's it.

So going by your comments you don't think your parents have worked out for themselves that you're bisexual?
If they have, they're in denial, going by the way they always talk about boyfriends when the subject of my relationships comes up. But no, I doubt it. I've brought home a boyfriend or two, but never a girlfriend. Partly not wanting to come out, but mostly an organic result of being really bad at doing relationships for long periods of time, so ... it's not something that's had a chance to explode into the open yet. (They're also well aware that both of their children are intensely private people, and they don't pry too much).

I don't think it would be an absolute disaster even in the worst case - if I met a girl I was really serious about, I would talk to my parents about the whole thing, instead of concealing it or running off or breaking up with her. And I actually find the worst case scenario relatively unlikely. But, as it stands, there's quite a bit preventing me rocking the boat (other than inertia and general cowardice, which certainly play their roles).

I have to think about my brother and what they're likely to ask him afterwards, and he has his own set of reservations (including a long-term boyfriend who's the son of a preacher himself, and so similarly closeted). Neither of us are financially independent yet (much as we try) and the worst case scenario screwing things up there would be ... bad, obviously. It's also the whole thing with Dad's Catholicism - while he's one of the most good people I know, and could probably reconcile this to himself, I can't help but dread even just what stresses his religion might add to him, never mind his relationship with us. On the other hand, while Mum isn't religious, she's also distinctly carefree with homophobic comments. Not a "burn all gays" thing, but we have a gay cousin, and she comes out with every negative stereotype imaginable about him and his partner. Almost like a racist grandmother, who would be shocked to hear that you consider her use of "nigger" or "everyone knows that blacks don't X" unacceptable.

When I do get that girlfriend, or I can stand on my own feet, and not hurt anyone else in the doing, I will tell them. I don't want to keep this secret forever. But ... that time's not yet.

Good luck with that. My older half sister only came out to our mother because my father(her step-father) pretty much made her after he figured it out himself. My father was pretty fine with it, but my mother was in tears. My half sister is eleven years older than me so I don't really remember it myself. Even after that she was never really open about it. I think I was around eleven when I worked it out for myself. Of course when I asked my mother she would angrily deny it. Even though I had known for years she only ever really came out to me two years ago when her girlfriend( and at this point eventual wife) made a joking comment that could not possibly be interpereted as anything other than them being lesbians. She then awkwardly asked me what I thought of gay people while clearly trying to avoid just stating it outright. Now the only thing keeping her from getting married is the awkward tension it would cause with the rest of our family and in particular our mother. Whenever you come out to your parents I hope it's easier than it was for my half sister.

BG still makes my laptop fan rev up. My new one plays DA:I on high settings, but thinks it needs to cool itself off for a game from 1999.

As to recommended games, really depends how bad it is. Transistor, Child of Light, a Civilization game, I dunno.

I honestly like the realtalk and emotional parts of this thread more than I do the funny parts even if I am providing the dumber parts in the form of Wendy's. Also the parts where Seika informs me about random bits of information that I'm curious about in regards to the UK. Cuzz she's cool like that.

They're trying to back away from the association of "Red Indians"... by turning them into magical white people.

They're trying to back away from the association of "Red Indians"... by turning them into magical white people.

Because when dealing with having to represent another culture the obvious choice is to just replace them with white people. Despite the fact that this is live action and therefore wouldn't have the problems associated with coloring them as red in the animated version if they just got an actress of Native American descent. The only way this could get more awkward would be if all the other Native Americans were actually played by Native American actors and all served under a white chief and his daughter. I don't plan to see this movie anyway so for all I know that might actually happen.

To my knowledge they do it so the jackets stay in shape while on display. Open pockets tend to bulge a little after a while, especially when you put things into them.

Usually you can just (carefully) cut the provisional thread to open the pocket, or ask the employee to do it for you. That voids your right to return it, though.

That's about what most people hear perceive it as too. I'm still convinced that a significant portion of the viewership must be pedophiles. Except for my sister. I sometimes question if my sister intentionally watches the worst possible shows when she's in the living room just to fuck with me. We hate each other enough that I can honestly believe she would do it.
