I didn't mean that I seriously hope for that to happen. Just that if it did I would laugh my ass off.

So I was watching the new tv adaptation "Jekyll and Hyde" and towards the end of the first episode Jekyll completely loses himself in rage and becomes Hyde. When I saw that I couldn't stop hearing Monster by Skillet play inside my head.

Deen's tame: I don't care if she watched it when she was six. It just means that her absolute age is very young, and that scares me. It's the feeling of creeping obsolescence.

Iirc "barbaroi" is basically what the Greeks would use to refer to anyone that isn't the Peloponnesian states, Egypt, and what they called Ethiopia (not what we call Ethiopia).

That was the Western Empire. The Eastern Empire continued as the Byzantine Empire until 1453. Although for the last few centuries they weren't very powerful, they remained one of the biggest powers in Europe and the Middle East for centuries after the fall of the Western Empire.

Iirc "barbaroi" is basically what the Greeks would use to refer to anyone that isn't the Peloponnesian states, Egypt, and what they called Ethiopia (not what we call Ethiopia).

If I'm remembering correctly wasn't that basically most of the world that the ancient Greeks had detailed knowledge of with the exception of Persia, Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Anatolia?

Seika
October 26th, 2015, 04:42 PM
There's whole books on the subject of how exactly the barbaroi were defined (Edith Hall's Inventing the Barbarian was the most recent work to really expand the field), but "their languages sound silly, so we'll call them after the funny sounds they make" is probably true enough from an etymological perspective, if not necessarily how it would always have been used.

Iirc "barbaroi" is basically what the Greeks would use to refer to anyone that isn't the Peloponnesian states, Egypt, and what they called Ethiopia (not what we call Ethiopia).
I could probably find enough edge cases to make it look like I'm taking this apart, but it's really not a bad start.

The only big caveat I would actually force in is that the Greek colonies were all around the Med at this point, and they pretty definitely weren't barbarians (even if, occasionally, their theoretical rulers were). In terms of major geographical areas, you also need to discount the Ionian coast too, basically.

E: That is the Ionian coast of Asia Minor, where all the actual Ionian settlers were, not the coast of the Ionian sea.

I was also the most knowledgeable in general when it came to history. Me and one other student were the only two anybody ever came to ask for help with history. They mostly went to him because I would get annoyed when somebody asked me a stupid question. I remember one time when a girl asked for help on a World War 2 project. She was under the Impression that Pearl Harbor was located in Washington and that it was attacked by Muslim terrorists. I then walked away in silence.

The World Wars get so romanticized these days. It's a bit concerning really.

The body counts weren't always reliable on any front. Do you have statistics to share or are you just arguing for arguments sake?

Well we tend to romanticize war in general and World War 2 was the most intense conflict in human history. There hasn't been a war since then that comes anywhere close in terms of lives lost and its impact across the world.

It's still too recent to be romanticized imo.

The joke is 'who's counting' applies to the method of measure, it's clearly not body counts.

I mean the Nazis are like the easiest villains to portray as evil you could ask for. At least in World War 1 almost all the countries involved were in some way at fault to some extent.
