If we're talking about the Alps as a border, I think Italy is actually on the same continental plate as Africa.

Also women were in charge and wore clothing that exposed the boobies.
This is based in some questionable conjectures from Evans (the great Minoan excavator) et al. Questionable like a lot of his reconstructions in general, actually - the Minoan art, architecture, history, society, language ... He was into some proto-New Age stuff, and in fact probably also inspired a lot of it himself, with his theories. We don't have a high opinion of much of it today.

Religiously, female dominance is evident: male figures in Minoan deific frescoes are invariably smaller (usually by at least half) and less detailed than female ones; priestess iconography also leads us to think that they were more numerous and powerful than any men who served. That all said, our reconstructions of general society's gender divisions and power relations are tentative to say the least (certainly after the loss of Evan's God-King). Men remain prominent and dominant (some would argue exclusively dominant; in my opinion, the artistic evidence is simply not clear enough) in the fields of athletics, hunting, and war. Our identifications of potential royalty are too tenuous to make assertions on their strength. It's all very muddy, as one might expect from a three-and-a-half thousand year old society, of whose writing we can perhaps decipher about three words.

On the other hand, both Minoan and even Mykenaian society are, if not gender-agnostic, certainly more equal than one would expect. We've discussed the Minoans, but the written records we can wring out of the Mykenaians indicate women holding slaves in their own right, leading temples and owning land in the name of the gods, and participating in industry (weaving and clothing, admittedly). Noticeably better than Classical Greece, for a start.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

No Communism was a whole lot of things going back to long before Marxism, Marxist theory just reoriented it into an urban context. But even then it was never supposed to be a map for state building or anything. The previously mentioned common parlance evolved in response to different forms of governance that arose from incorporating those theories into governance.

Is there any realistic hope of us deciphering Linear A? Barring some unexpected discovery of a Rosetta stone equivalent?
I hesitate to say it's impossible, because that's what it looked like for Linear B. But Linear B admitted to some statistical analysis to decrypt parts of the syllabary, which combined with the fact that we already know Greek (and Greek was on people's radar for Linear B even if it was by no means settled) to allow Ventris et al. their breakthrough. We've already tried that on Linear A, and have the advantage of understanding Linear B's syllabary which was pretty definitely descended from the Linear A one. Practically all it turns out is nonsense.

So either we have to totally mix things up to somehow make Linear A turn out sensical Greek - or some other language we know since there's no really good reason Linear A ought to be Greek - or else we have the basic sounds right and the language is an isolate that we don't know, and therefore have the most minuscule chance of ever understanding. It would take an extraordinary, experimental, and highly suspect effort of comparative linguistics, which (since we've already looked hard at Linear A and haven't dug up easy PIE roots) I can't imagine would work.

I couldn't tell you the specific reason for the Chinese alliance myself.

E: Huh, I thought we'd already pretty much determined A was an isolate since B was just Mycenaean Greek and seemed unrelated. Well if you ever decipher it or figure out the reason for the Collapse, let us know.

Nah it's cool I get where you're coming from with this. It's just that if you look at it historically and not only in the context of the past 60 or so years, you can't really apply that distinction anymore.

there's the anecdote that Yugoslavia always sent the best uniforms and equipment to soldiers patrolling the border with Albania to rub it in how poor they were in comparison.

Well yes, that's why the split was a stupid idea, there's nothing IN Slovakia. It's part of why Dubcek opposed it, it'd be like America splitting with a small town in Iowa.

How long did it take to decipher Linear B?

Though if you count Evans' splitting of Linear A and Linear B as the start of decipherment, then it's more like 44 years.

E: Huh, I thought we'd already pretty much determined A was an isolate since B was just Mycenaean Greek and seemed unrelated.
There are still a few moderately respectable scholars who see equivalences. I personally doubt it because Linear B and Greek are so incontrovertibly unsuited for one another - rather like katakana equivalents of alphabetic words - that it would be bizarre for A to be writing Greek too.* One would have to assume either that the Minoans imported their script wholesale and never had a native writing system, as we currently assume of the Mykenaians, or else that there was an older language on Crete for which the Linear scripts were created and that this was somehow displaced by Greek by the time of the Linear A writings. (And then one has to work out how the Cretan hieroglyphics figure into this as well).

*e.g. pa-te has to serve double duty as 'pater' (father) and 'pantes' (all). Or 'a-i' serves as the dative plural ending standing for 'ahi', while 'a' is the nominative plural standing for 'ai'. But 'a-i' certainly wouldn't stand for 'ai': that's much too simple.

Well if you ever decipher it or figure out the reason for the Collapse, let us know.

Well I haven't played for 2 years or so, so I'm unsure if there were any previously added before her or what. All I've gathered is that no, there weren't.

The only reason I play is for the main storyline. Which is supposedly very cinematic-y in the newest expansion.

Off the top of my head, no. I do know Dragon Age: Inquisition has romance options for heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual characters. As in, there are characters you can romance who are strictly gay (male & female), straight, or that swing both ways. I also know that those don't feel shoehorned in, for the most part. I enjoyed most of the classic Metroid games, and Prime 3 was actually pretty cool, but Other M was so un-Metroid I would have thought it was a different game all together if not for Ridley, who is literally the only good boss in the game. Due to the lackluster sales of Other M, they might slow further production of another Metroid game even more if this one sells poorly. I wouldn't mind that really. Oh well, I'm still relatively hopeful for Zelda Wii U. Now if only they would give us a name so we could stop calling it that.

Nope. When a game fucks with the series protagonist and pretends that the Prime games never happened in an attempt to make itself make sense in the timeline and also removes any hint of non-linearity in a series known for it I cannot forget about it.

I'd probably prefer a 2D sequel to Fusion. Partly because it would fit better as a sequel and partly because the 3DS has had a better time getting good games than the Wii U.

it's not that Garden of Words was bad, it's just that his music would be great for so much more

he's probably one of the few people other than Kajiura I'd have trusted to score the KnK adaptation; what an alternate timeline that would have been

but no. KnK was always going to need something special on the music front, since any adaptation needed to make up in ATMOSPHERE what you lost by cutting 90% of the internal monologues for scene-setting

I agree that Michael Gordon would be an excellent choice (unnerving atonal stuff in general would be good for KnK) but I still think that GIAA - given good direction - would be able to produce something very good and unique for KnK. They've got a strong showing in strong, slow ambients - another producer who's very good with that, though more on the synth/electronic end of things, is Mario M - and an ability to upshift things for action that isn't just MGRR-esque buttrock. Given proper direction, their take on it would be to guitars what Kalafina's OST is to violins.

on a related note, I'm trying to remember this Pakistani post-rock artist I liked a while ago, but I'm coming up blank

The first 5 movies have the perfect individual run times. I wasn't getting at the series as a whole. I generally think of the movies more separately than I would episodes of a tv series.
