The thing about "destroy the world" as a motivation is that it provides your heroes something to fight against but the villain can't possibly have thought it through very well. Because at the end of it, what is their plan? Unless their plan is the destruction of themselves by means of the destruction of the world, then what is supposed to come next? "Destroy the world" as a motivation is a really big temper tantrum. (But I am only familiar with Fate stuff so far as I'll refrain from analyzing the specifics like I know anything yet.)

yeah this was kinda DoO's motivation.
But rather than temper tantrum, it was having completely given up and trying to help another sentient species out.

My goal in life is achieving a state where I won't have to think about my future ever again. Something like a mindless office job that provides enough for basic self-sustenance would be ideal.

If we're talking life goals, mine is to get employed in the oil industry before it starts booming again so that I can enjoy skyrocketing pay increases and have the potential to retire by my 50s or just keep working for the hell of it because no one is going to fire someone with that much experience when the next glut occurs.

do you guys have a goal in life?

Yes and no. I have been kind of stuck and confused since I graduated college. It doesn't really seem like it was "for" anything. I was a really good college student and my identity had always been wrapped up in being a student. My degree kind of was in "graduate school application fluff" even though I did it because I liked it. I had always intended to continue, but by the time I was finished with undergrad I was exhausted and a little disillusioned with the process, wanting to know what was on the other side.

So I've kind of been floundering around for two years, trying to figure it out. I ended up with what could have been a pretty permanent job as an admin, but I wasn't happy. Then the corporate environment where I was working got more and more hostile, so I quit and am going back to what I know. Right now I'm trying to get back in school (to be a teacher - school forever), and I don't know if that's the answer but it keeps me moving. I have a lot of other interests, but I don't know if I'm passionate enough about them to make a viable game plan to support myself with them. I feel kind of chained to a type of institutionalization, but I admire education so there's that.

My goal in life is achieving a state where I won't have to think about my future ever again. Something like a mindless office job that provides enough for basic self-sustenance would be ideal.

This is basically what I was last doing. Lasted six months. Wanted to scream, and I even liked my coworkers for the most part.

as for me i don't have a goal in life

i wish i did. fiction makes me envious because most characters have something they want to achieve. i wish i had something i wanted to achieve and did everything to reach for that goal. living for the sake of living makes living not worth living

I understand this feeling, but I think that being envious of fiction is kind of missing the point of why people tell fantastical stories (for understandable reasons). I think people tell stories, even ones that "can't happen in real life," because they're trying to express something about how real life feels. The fact that you might emotively respond to that in a way you can't figure out how to respond to your real life is something I experience, too. But you said yourself, you care about the characters who have something they want to achieve. Without characters to relate to, you wouldn't be envious of a narrative. Figure out what that story is saying to you about that person. You're probably not envious of their specific goal. You're envious of the fact that they have found something to fight for. Not everyone has it in them to fight to save the literal world, but if you're attracted to the heroes of stories maybe you need to find something small to start with to help with some small problem in the world. There are plenty. You don't have to reach outside yourself more than you're able, but feeling entirely purposeless might mean that you are looking to yourself to spontaneously develop Purpose as some kind of inner fire. It's similar to what I was saying about talent earlier. Look outside yourself. There are plenty of fires to put out or to keep burning, as needed, if that's what you want. And I literally hate agreeing with Zero generation about anything at this point, but I think that it's important to remember that for the protagonist of a story to have a purpose and drive that there has to be conflict in the story. To be a hero and save people, there has to be something they need saving from. If you want a valuable goal, though, there are plenty to be had.

Did you speak to him at all?

No. It was a lecture hall/auditorium kind of situation and I thought about trying to approach him when his talk was over, but a lot of people did. I feel bad for people of note kind of getting over-exposed and exhausted when they try to interact with the masses. I was quite close to him at one point after he left out the back entrance and I was walking too my dorm, but my momentary consideration of approaching him was sniped by another group of enthusiastic students. Additionally, as I mentioned, I had 30% of the sauce contents of a Healthy Choice Cafe Steamer on my shirt which was getting cold, a plastic bowl in one hand.

I'm sure it has something to do with color theory...? Different colors complement other colors, and I think red and blue are two of those, so even if I think I look okay in a mirror in blue, if I take my picture in it I look too pink or red. Just more proof that cameras are probably some kind of evil. I'm sure I'm mostly just sad because this means I can never be a Saberface.

Yeah my god don't go into the last chapter unprepared. Get 4 level 50 skells and get all the characters you are taking to at least level 50 if not 55. Try to fight the fight boss on foot because the second encounter is nigh impossible on foot. If your skell gets destroyed then you are stuck on foot for the rest of the mission.

Oooh, a question for me, thank you. Some days none except that I read things like random threads on this forum. But when I'm working on something I can usually get 1-2k a day if I know what I want to write. I kind of binge-read, too. Sometimes I spend several hours reading a fic or a book.

The biggest problem I have is that I can't write concisely to save my life. I've been working on a fic for fun for a couple of weeks now, and I kept think it'd be 1-2k, but I'm at 2k just setting it up.

It is my eternal shame that I nearly had all A's in every English class I ever took except my Intro to Linguistics class. I loved linguistics, but I forgot to turn in an extra credit thing that would have made up for the fact that I'm not great at the phonetic symbols when they're extensive. I really love dialectology, though. I guess because it validates my southern accent as not mutually exclusive with some form of intelligence. I don't know where you're from or if American accents are of any interest to you, but there is this documentary I had to watch in every single linguistics class I ever took that was around on youtube for a while called American Tongues that is dated but pretty funny and interesting.

Somehow I don't have much of a southern accent despite having been born and lived my entire life in Texas.

I'm a chameleon with accents without even meaning to be. There's a thing that is called "code shifting" and I think maybe there's a more precise term but it's basically when a person changes the language they use in subtle ways without realizing they're doing it in order to blend into an environment. Like most people would speak differently at work or school than at home. I do that, but it includes my accent in its entirety.

If I'm around only southerners from my area for a long time then I speak to someone else from elsewhere, it will definitely be apparent. However, if I go and spend a week with my Canadian friend's family, I will almost have a Canadian accent by the week's end, and I didn't put any effort into obtaining it. It just happens and I don't mean it as pretense it just... monkey see, monkey do???

The only part of the game with a pungent, near palpable atmosphere was Latria. I'll admit I was a tiny bit uncomfortable my first few minutes in there, which is more than anything else has made me feel.

Saber maid cafe was golden.

It is literally one of my favorite things ever, and my username here came from my other favorite one. My username is too long and can't be shortened into anything nice, sadly, but watched that episode like on a loop every time I got home for days it seemed like. The first errand one was great too, though.

HGGP isn't a bad shorthand.

It doesn't sound like a name or word, though, which I kind of don't like. It's okay, not terrible, but I could have done better if I had anticipated this problem.

I bought chicken noodle soup and a kind of lemon chicken soup from the store today, calling back to the soup discussion from before. Too suggestible.

What do you think of Hollow Ataraxia?

How does just Grand Prix sound to you?

I had toyed with the idea of suggesting just "Prix" because it's very short and sort of sounds like a name-word, so that is acceptable to me. I kind of think it's difficult for people to choose their own nicknames, and if HGGP is what sticks then I am not entirely opposed to it. I'm just whining. But any of the mentioned options is acceptable to me. I'm embarrassing myself I don't mean to be too particular. I never do just-silly-for-fun names places, and this is what I get for it this time haha.

What do you think of Hollow Ataraxia?

I only really know what I have read about it from everyone's favorite unreliable source. I'm curious about it, but as far as knowing it as well as I know CP (having actually watched it) I do not at all. I one time read a sort of summary of it and I know that there was a description of a scene that went something like:

"Shirou makes sweet potatoes in the yard alone."

And I laughed about this sentence for what felt like a year. It looks like some kind of modern poetry. It seems profound and yet completely meaningless. It describes a certain aspect of Shirou so well that I don't think it can even be adequately explained.

But I do not know if this is a reliable description.

That is excellent news.

However, from my understanding HA is based on a time loop that kind of involves happy-silly-endings that can't ever actually be because of this time loop? Maybe I'm wrong. But I guess something I love about CP is that it just really feels like that this is a sitcom AU where things can just... happen like this forever. I mean I know there's a sort of framing device with the cats and everything, but it feels less like something that can't just be taken for itself rather than as something to be "fixed"? And therefore I can, like, take all of the serious timeline stuff for what it is and then CP as its own therapeutic nonsense.

I don't know if my impression of HA is right though. I mean, I'm interested in it! But something I love about CP is how that if I'm feeling kind of down about how much these characters I care about just... genuinely suffer almost all the time, I can turn to CP where it just seems like they live in this perpetual state of "Archer goes to the store to buy batteries for Rin," "Heracles goes to the store to buy batteries for Illya," "Saber has a food baby after a dinner date with Shirou," "Rin cannot use a Bluray recorder," "Gilgamesh is genuinely just a hilarious nuisance who gets knocked over by Heracles." And the episodes all seem sort of self-contained in their weirdness, even if they could be said to overlap, so it just seems like these little slices of worlds where things aren't quite as bad. But it lets the poignancy of the actual story remain in place?

So have my cake and eat it too.

Yeah, HA is happy and depressing like that. Everything is just perfect and everyone but Kirei survived the holy grail war. The ending is pretty much the realization that it's impossible for everyone to have a happy ending and that replaying the same happy moments forever is pointless.

Part of Carnival Phantasms charm is that it isn't bittersweet like a lot of Nasu's works tend to be. No ends the story with some deep regret they can never truly fix or an impossible desire. You just get to see all the characters who suffered so much or who had an unhappy ending get one. Everyone seems to just be having a great time without the feeling that it all has to end eventually. It just feels more fair on some level that everyone who got put through so much gets to relax and have fun.
Also it has Bersercar making it instantly perfect.

But that's horrible and I refuse. See, I think that it's much more bearable to have a story where people are healing from really awful circumstances and figuring out how to make things good again and to have a totally separate story where things are happier. It just seems... cruel and unusual to have it be this situation where "everyone gets what they want except they can't have what they want just kidding." I mean, I am morbidly fascinated with it as storytelling. It isn't necessarily bad storytelling. But it hurts my feelings and it should feel bad.

Yes! See, this is good as opposed to having to somehow get it all back in-line with something that tonally fits the primary FSN universe. I mean, I think happier-ending fics and everything have their place even in the mainline universe, but things like what happen in CP wouldn't fit.

I love how bored-smug Illya looks when she is about to reveal Bersercar and how angry Rin is.
