Probably because it's adapting older Parts which are quite notable for not actually being very GOOD, just wildly enjoyable.

Wow this is libel and misinformation. I do not hate ants. In fact, I think they are cool and when I see ant hills I go out of my way to avoid disturbing them!!! However, there are certain times when pests have invaded human dwelling places and such at which point they must be dealt with. In which case, I advocate the least unpleasant method of elimination possible. I care about ants.

Stop playing games and get off tinder. Meet people in real life. Eventually meet someone who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Get married and have children. Plan for the future and retire into a comfortable life. As you die content and happy with your life check the Halo matchmaking one last time, there are still no matches.

I'm about to just get in bed and sleep the night out. I'm a little anxious though because I'm taking care of my landlord's koi ponds. One of the smaller ones loses a lot of water when it goes below freezing, to the point where it basically has to be refilled everyday, but the faucet for the hose is literally frozen, I can't even budge it to get some water to top that thing off. Nggguuuyaaaaah if it doesn't cool down a bit tomorrow I'll literally walk buckets over to his place and fill it up like that if I have to.

Short nails don't get caught when you're putting your glove on, and make it a bit easier to do delicate manoeuvring of the sword. Also I have enough scars on my left hand from this sport to be worried about the day a missed lunge hits a long nail the wrong way and takes it clean off. I have no idea if that's realistic (the amount of force is certainly within reach) but I see no reason to chance it.

Why were you biting your toenails of all things?

Just took clothes off radiator. Discovered radiator was hot - at four bloody AM. The housemates who have set that heater timing are the same ones whose excuse for why I can't run the dryer (and therefore have to put my clothes on the radiator against the terms of my tenancy contract) was that it was too expensive. I'll be so bloody glad to be shot of these pillocks in six months.

But toenails can get ingrown due to a lot of factors. I had a pair of Nike's my mom bought me back in middle school to one-up my dad that didn't fit quite right and ended up also giving me an infected ingrown toenail. That nobody believed me about until it was full of pus and shit. But I had it professionally taken care of instead of doing self-surgery and there was something about salt water baths several times a day for it and stuff idk.

Actually, I read something recently talking about how "show, don't tell" is a lazy rule by lazy teachers for lazy students. It's an oversimplification of what you should be doing, which is less camera-panning at everything and more conveying complex emotional states. It makes the case that this rule reinforces the tendency of young and inexperienced writers to sacrifice artistry at the alter of pure description. Sure, puffed-up descriptive sentences do a great job of telling you what the couch looks like, but ultimately you should be more concerned about what the couch makes the main character think of or remember than whether or not you can fluff up another way of saying that it looks ugly and old.

So, it's true that you should show, but sometimes just telling is the most efficient way to get onto the meat of what writing excels at- exploring things that you can't see.

So, to answer this a day late:

Perhaps. But that's just fiddling around with the mechanisms of words; when you consider why writing even exists in the first place, it's obvious that 'show don't tell' is necessary. Books, fundamentally, are not rational objects: they exist in order to create a world that seems more real than what is - these are emotional. And this is not a mechanism that works through telling the reader. Nobody has ever remembered War and Peace for polemic essay on historical cause, even though this is exactly the same as the literary parts of the book. If your goal in writing is 'telling' and not 'showing' you are the insert chapters in W&P, not the narrative. And, additionally, it means you're writing what is really an essay and not a novel, because the latter is a combination of text and reader. Reducing the novel to 'telling by any possible means, including showing,' reduces it to a radio to the author.

A lot of the time, I think people take "show, don't tell," to mean that you shouldn't really explain character motivations or internal thoughts or emotions, though. I agree that there is a certain kind of writing that doesn't lend itself to feeling like good narrative. I can't think of a good example of what I'm talking about except that I didn't read the Narnia books as a kid but I tried to read them in high school after I had become interested in the movies. And I liked the movies because I thought that the characters were compelling and that their interactions felt real. However, when I read the books (I think I stopped at some point but not sure where) I felt that the world descriptions were beautiful. But then, when it got around to having characters be present and interacting, the books that deal with the Pevensie kids feel like they are dry, transcript accounts of necessary dialogue. It feels like the dialogue and character interaction doesn't want to be there except to propel the plot forward and to remind you that people are there. So it's one of the few cases where I prefer the films to a book I've read because those characters are emoting in a way that the characters in the books are never allowed to.As I recall, I liked The Horse and His Boy the most of the ones I'd read because their narrative did involve the characters' feelings a lot more -- feelings of being trapped, feelings of mutually desiring freedom, and the different reasons those feelings had come to be.

I thought that might be a good example since those are primarily intended as children's books. I know that people either love them or hate them usually, but it was the example I thought of. But I think that there is a kind of negative telling-not-showing that makes portions of those books read like textbooks about the history of a fantasy world. I think they're lacking, though, not because of what they share in the form of the narrative but what they don't. There are no indications about what the characters are doing when they're interacting with each other for the most part, and it makes them fall flat where world and plot descriptions don't in the same way. I think that sometimes people take "show, don't tell," to mean that somehow you shouldn't let characters have inner worlds that are directly shown rather than implied to the reader. It's possible to overdo that, but I think you can fail to give it enough attention as well.

I felt like The Chronicles of Narnia got utterly boring with The Silver Chair, got a bit better with The Horse and His Boy and the last one could just be substituted with the Book of Revalation and nothing would have been lost in terms of attatchment to the characters at that point.

I know I never read the last one. Anyway it was just a random example that I thought read like a textbook in places that it shouldn't have. I think Tolkein is also like this but I only ever read The Fellowship of the Ring and was like "I can't go through this again."

Huh. I mostly only ever saw the "show don't tell" thing as a reminder not to be too terse and unemotive in your narration (unless that terseness is exactly what's being shown)

I can actually barely remember the last book outside it being the Book of Revalation in Narnia. I mean the Biblical references were never subtle, but it's seriously all I can remember from that one.

I think that a lot of people take it to be "You should avoid having the characters think or feel in your narration much because they should only show it externally in their actions," which if taken really far leads to a lot of flat one way or another. But I could be wrong.

That's always what I took it as too. And it did make it feel forced a lot.

Or rather, you SHOW the feelings externally through various clues to the reader, like the character crying. Instead of just "she's sad."

I feel like a mix of both is good though.

Yes. If I'm to take anything from this thread about my writing and general existence it's that I'm too verbose. But I have actually tried over the years to get better at having characters move through their worlds in a way that are reflective of emoting as well as having them consciously think about or express things. It depends on the character and what they are likely to do and how outwardly expressive they are, but I think balance is important to find and that it probably will vary from work to work even by the same author.

Speaking of showing and telling.

I have decided that this creature should be superimposed into all forms of literature that cause human suffering as at least one of the protagonists. I'm sure he could be very expressive in showing readers the true quality of a work.

It was Susan who stopped believing in Narnia. Peter most definitely still believed in Narnia. There are big academic treatises about how C.S. Lewis was afraid of feminine women or something because he chose her of the characters to have this issue. And Lewis died before he could do any follow up so like I think there's some debate that he kind of just meant the implication to be that some people don't get to things through idealism. Because Aslan literally told the older kids to stop believing in him the way they did or whatever. Either that or panty hose are evil.

Gl❀w

Oh yeah, because Peter was like some King Arthur stand in or some shit. But different name, same result.

Also I'm p. sure that he didn't say not to believe in him, I'm p. sure he just told them they could no longer come back to Narnia until the apocolypse some distant future or something.

Whose perspective was this from, though? The reliability of the narrator/source is important. And I mean if it was from the perspective of the other Pevensie children, any of them, I think that Susan's rejection of a thing they had experienced like that would lead to some kinds of resentment of the things she'd used to cope. I used to read a lot of Narnia fanfiction that dealt with the fallout of literally growing into adulthood, a mature adulthood, where you ruled a country, and then being plopped back into adolescence like it was nothing. If the story is taken seriously, then it's kind of horrifying and would probably induce certain feelings of dissonance who who you are allowed to be versus who you've been that would make a person develop all manner of weird coping mechanisms. Which was originally my point in bringing up Narnia at all -- there are a lot of interesting implications and ideas for characters there, but the characters themselves often lack an internal life. You have to work for "Well maybe the character felt [x] when they said..." even though if they're meant to be perceived as people you have to assume they have background feelings. Which is why I thought it was relevant to the "show don't tell" discussion.

Yes, and the lack of internal life that you mentioned I think points quite clearly that it was of secondary importance here. Primary being to tell the reader what is necessary to get into Heaven. It's the Book of Revelation.

I guess this gets into the different topic of the value or importance of authorial intent. You're probably right about the intended narrative weight of words meaning what they say. However, I think it's also a valid consideration of a work to read things into it that the author didn't necessarily think about or even intend. I think sometimes outside perspective of authorial intent can speak as much about limitations of a work than anything else. I think understanding authorial intent is good for technical analysis, but what a work might make a reader feel, wonder, or speculate is a good part of the reason anyone shares stories, in my opinion.

It's interesting to note the subtle differences in their religious subtext, since Tolkien was Catholic (I think) and Lewis a Protestant.

This line is brought up when people consider if Lewis was consciously or unconsciously misogynistic. I'm sure Leo might have something to say, but it seems people care about intent well beyond technical analysis in this case.
Other than that our relationship with intent depends on what is text to each of us and what we want out of a discussion about it.

I think it's fine and good to care about intent and blinding oneself to it is not a good thing. I'm just saying that I think being limited in one's understanding of fiction to only what is in the realm of what the author wanted out of their work is unnecessarily limiting.
