Watching ST from its first series is eminently not recommendable.

Unless you suffer from completionism autism, then you're just never going to watch ST.
Why would I want to watch buttheadmen?

If you're talking about the Kirk series then I might watch some of it for nostalgia shot. Some of it.

Yeah I meant the classical series.

I tried back when an uni freshman, I think I managed five episodes.

I'd probably skip most of that and most of DS9.

Like $350 or something ridiculous like that. They're like ~190 Euro but they're imported from London so the taxes and duties are stupid expensive too.

I am basically this about most things too. However I like pretty things and therefore will not turn down being given pretty things even if they are ludicrously expensive. Ergo:

First one was a random gift from my grandmother back when I was collecting vintage stuff. Second one was also a gift but I do know the company it comes from so I'm hazarding around $200-$250 or so.

My parents keep giving me socks every year, and I keep giving them back because they're always too small for my feet.

So my old man has a bunch of superhero socks he wears to work.

I mean that's only this election cycle. You gotta keep it general so that you can swap it out with "poor people" "black people" "Mexicans" "immigrants", etc and so on as necessary.
I mean they usually refer to all of them on a regular basis in complaints about the country and long before Trump started running. They actually say much worse shit than he does at times.

SeiKeo
January 19th, 2016, 09:01 PM
Like, put it this way: odds are, depending on your assumptions about future growth, it is going to be more efficient for people impacted by global warming to deal with it then, 30 years down the road when they have money, then to try and stop it in its tracks now while they don't. Plus, we're going to end up picking that path by default because most of the change is locked in.

Gl❀w
January 19th, 2016, 09:07 PM
Most of the cost of dealing with global warming issues is infrastructure change, and considering that the countries being most obstinate about this (see: USA) need infrastructure reinforcement and renovations anyway, it's really not necessarily costlier to change over the systems than it is to just do the infrastructure work needed anyway. Except the reason the infrastructure work needs so extensively helped is because they've been shoving off the problem for a later date for a long time instead of paying for it as necessary. So it's really the same reluctance to deal with a thing, that relies on the assumption of availability of funds that may or may not actually be available at a future date.

And also, it depends on how much you think quality of overall life on the planet, human and otherwise, should be dependent on financial cost.

mAc Chaos
January 20th, 2016, 12:26 AM
No but it was literally the perfect move.

It won't bring in any fresh blood but it'll energize the votes he already has when he needs to surge in Iowa. It'll help protect him from Cruz's attacks on his standing too.

Even I was starting to waver between Trump and Cruz but today I've just been imagining Palin as VP.

She wasn't THAT similar to Trump; it was the reaction he evoked in her opponents that was similar. She was actually conservative with a streak of radical moderation while Trump is full on muscular nationalism. Unlike Trump she managed to go in alone into the Alaskan political establishment which was corrupt from all sides, and beat it and clean it up without any backing. The problem is later on they managed to bleed her dry financially and she had to bow out.

But Trump is too rich for that. They can't touch him.

No, she was, that's why it was interesting. She hit on the cultural half of Trumpism but didn't really complete the particular brand of nationalism or the economic position, and she didn't have the freedom of action to follow through.

Gl❀w
January 20th, 2016, 12:36 AM
Palin was way less crazy in 2008 than she is today. Half the time these days you have to wonder if she's speaking drunk, but back in 2008 she actually had kind of a quaint charm to her that even if you don't agree with her politics, she at least came across as some kind of relative politician. Over the years, lots of conservative pundits that used to grovel at her feet have seriously distanced themselves as she's just become more and more over-the-top looney tunes.

mAc Chaos
January 20th, 2016, 12:38 AM
No, she was, that's why it was interesting. She hit on the cultural half of Trumpism but didn't really complete the particular brand of nationalism or the economic position, and she didn't have the freedom of action to follow through.
Well, there's also the identity difference. Trump happens to bring a lot to the table, but he's not the kind of guy you'd normally profile as a conservative.

Palin, on the other hand, is basically the physical incarnation of conservatism. Lives off in the wilderness, rugged individualism, Christian family values, frugal, consistent and pure principles, humble background, pulled herself up by her bootstraps, actually went into corrupt political establishment and beat it, had the feminist ideal of "having it all" with a family and a high level career, was charming, etc. She actually lives the values, it's not just a theory.

If you were just looking at their biographies you'd never expect them to be similar at all.

But that's why this endorsement is great; someone like Palin who has the perfect standing to look at someone and say whether they're good enough for them, goes a long way towards assuaging fears about Trump being too liberal or not trustworthy enough, when Cruz is hitting him for those exact points.

That said I'm still not exactly sure how much of his positions he'll follow through on, since unlike Palin he tends to be all over the place. But if you go look at his history, he has the same common themes he's been pushing all the way back into the 80s.

Obviously because trump himself has not always toed conservative orthodoxy. He has lurched rightward in recent months of course, but he still has a number of inconsistent policy positions which prevent him from a deep score on the scales. It snowed here today. Enough to be pretty and a mild nuisance since we don't know how to do snow here. I'd take a picture but I do not feel well and my dog is sick again. I had to play vigilant mother of baby for two hours and could not go back to sleep it's icky.
