'Huh', Tiffania thought as she checked her ears. Somehow they were that
of a normal human being! The shocked Tiffania looked to the side at
Tabitha. Somehow, this little blue-haired girl had helped her out with a
spell.

Unbeknownst to Tiffania, the spell "Face Change" that could change
appearances was a high-level square spell. At some point, Tabitha had
apparently reached the capability of a square class mage.

In any case, nothing seemed to be out of place with the port documents.
(Of course, since it was genuinely issued by the Tristainian government.)
Since everything was in order, the official had no further inquiries.

A heavy weight collectively lifted off of their chests.

It was sort of ironic that they managed to get away by the skin of their
teeth. Little did they know, they were inching towards disaster.

Ahhh, ZnT. Doomed never to finish and always to disappoint. Yet still, it remains infinitely better than its fanfics.

Did Saito ever stop cheating on Louise with better girls? Last I recall, "translations" stalled around Volume 19.

I had never even heard of this but a local restaurant chain sells some kind of mass-produced thing that has been around here for years that McDonald's recently tried picking up. Here we call whatever that is "cheddar rounds" because they have chopped up pieces of potato and melted cheese in them. There might be some onion flavor in some? If it is similar to what I'm thinking about based on what I saw when I googled.

It is a way to quickly navigate to their profiles if you want, for that visitor message thing or a link to PM them which some people use. And it helps you remember who you've talked to before if you're bad at names. But also, if you have someone added as a friend, on your own profile there is this activity tab thing that you can look at and filter either for just yourself or yourself and your friends to monitor recent public activity on the site, so you can in theory use it to see where your 'friends' are posting.

It's the flippancy. Like I can understand that the fact that I'm talking about a peanut butter sandwich probably makes this seem like not the most serious of topics, but the fact that I somewhat lightly bring up something that is currently going on for me that involves genuine, if irrational, feelings of being disappointed, tired, and upset is not something that I would myself bring up if it weren't a little pressing on my mind. I'm not trying to tell everyone here every time I have a mildly bothersome thought, and I try not to be a nuisance to people. But I don't callously joke about my own feelings or especially talk about disappointment as though it's not a real issue for me. I know you don't know me that well so you might not be able to know that, and I know that you've tried to commiserate before, but the problem with this kind of response is that it seems like a sarcastic remark that is designed to make light of my emotions. It is because it sounds trite or dismissive. Even if you don't intend it that way, tone and level of attention to something you say makes a difference, especially when someone is kind of having a bad day anyway. You probably don't know or intend for it to come off that way, but sometimes it sounds like being told to stop talking in a way that is certainly not friendly encouragement or banter.

It's the flippancy.
That statement doesn't convey flippancy, only an end to a simple conditional sentence. He didn't imply that talking about peanut butter is not serious, you made that conclusion, if I were to guess, because that's how you think it would look from someone else's perspective based on your personal experience and because he didn't use words carefully in his answer for reasons you again supposed, because you don't know him well enough either.
Basically, fuck non-visual conversations.

nom/voc/acc/gen/dat/abl is the Australian way, so I'm pretty sure it is a commonwealth thing

IIRC it was Kennedy's primer that standardised that order

His introduction kind of implies it was already standard:
"In a text-book of this kind there is an obvious advantage in keeping, wherever it is possible, a popular and well-understood system, and I believe that the old order of Declension is, from a purely philological point of view, wholly unobjectionable."

(Interestingly, when he comes to actually discuss the cases and not merely order them in a paradigm, he goes Nom/Voc/Acc/Dat/Abl/Gen).

- - - Updated - - -

Okay, so linguists think there's a point in grouping the cases in a specific order?

it's nom/gen/dat/acc/ins/loc/voc for us btw

Seika
February 10th, 2016, 10:15 AM
They arrange cases as nominative/genitive/dative/ablative/accusative(/vocative), whereas we do nominative/vocative/accusative/genitive/dative/ablative. We're teasing each other over which arbitrary arrangement is best.

(Other than the main point, which is to have fun, I do actually prefer N/V/Ac/G/D/Ab because it pairs lots of the similar sounds and broadly arranges the cases in order of obliqueness. I am wholly certain that wouldn't stop me arguing the other side if I'd been taught that way, though).

Marmadillo
February 10th, 2016, 10:20 AM
Didn't learn Greek, but Latin was nom/gen/dat/acc/abl/voc, probably that way because we're used to such order.

Just curious, how do the stretches help?

I don't know that it would help with preparing for a chiropractic appointment in particular, but stretching is very important to maintain range of motion. Stretching before the appointment might make your body more receptive to the help you're getting, and underlying musculature and flexibility of your body to adjust to general movement are what will help your body stay the way it's supposed to be aligned. When I injured my ankle and my rib, stretching was even more emphasized than exercise, though with the former both were required in physical therapy.

Depends. You can't buy into that "chiropractors make you OVERALL HEALTHY and you WON'T GET SICK" shit, but if your spine sucks at being a spine the way mine does, regular adjustments do greatly decrease pain and literal headaches by relieving unnatural and irregular tension against muscles and nerves.

Does going to a chiropractor actually help? I was always suspicious that they'd break my spine or something.According to the NHS and the "General Chiropractic Council":

There is good evidence that manual therapy which may include spinal manipulation – as practised by chiropractors – can be an effective treatment for persistent lower back pain. Conventional treatments for persistent lower back pain include painkillers, exercise and physiotherapy.
There is no evidence that treatments offered by chiropractors are effective for other conditions.

and to elaborate, the majority of events in the book happen before Arthur & Co. settle in Camelot. Many of the characters we'd normally meet later are introduced to us (and each other) during this timeframe, most notably when the annual "try to pull the sword from the stone even though they all know they can't but are too stubborn to give up" gathering comes about.

Long story short it's like this:

13 yr old Guinevere sees the 17 yr old Bedivere for the first time she can't stop blushing and falling all over herself and trying to start nerdy conversations about flowers and JEEZUS s-s-stuttering all over the place because CRUSH, while Bedivere is all "I don't know how to handle girls, somebody pls halp". Morgan, Gawain, and Kay are all "lol nice wife". Then, later, he saves a 3 yr old Nimue who says she's really 5 and who clings to him like a puppy and he's all "I don't know what to do with this kid, somebody pls take her" and everyone (except Merlin who's "THIS KID IS CURSED, MUST AVOID"), even Arthur, are all like "lol nice girlfriend" and Gawain especially is like "GG you win".

Oh and I mentioned this before but when Morgan gives him a bath he gets a boner and just stares at it like "damn, son, you need to get laid" and he's all "omg so embarrassing my pride".

I might look into it, especially if the library might have it. I prefer library books because I don't have a lot of permanent places for books to live. And yes, I also like stories that acknowledge how young people could be when they had major impact on the world around them. I think that because of the way we live now, there is an assumption that a person cannot accomplish anything of merit or anything particularly bad until a certain age, and it is very interesting to have reminders of how people live when they're racing against a much more limited or dire amount of time.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Oh, and while I kinda exaggerated and went silly with the "long story short" it's actually pretty grim at times, like when they're all deciding whether to go off and save some kidnapped kids and Guinevere goes into a rant (addressing them all but mainly yelling at Bedivere) about if they would hesitate to leap into action if it were her and she was the one about to be beaten, raped, and ravaged she'd rather kill slit her own throat than wait... or how when it's the end of his first major battle and Bedivere is just sitting there staring at all the dead bodies watching crows n'shit picking at the remains and starts vomiting everywhere.

So, you know, there's a nice balance I think. Though, there's lots of exposition and a few noticeable grammar mistakes that would've been fixed if looked at more closely but yeah, overall, I'd recommend it.

I think that acknowledging violence and terrible things are an important part of any kind of fiction that involves struggle against them. However, it is good to read something from time to time where it isn't just grimdark all the time. However, anything that ends as the Arthurian legend does is always going to end up being sad and grim in the end.

I need to take the library's copy of Gilgamesh back soon. I already owe a bit on it, and I plan to order a copy that was recommended to me by Seika, whom I trust in all matters related to these things. I think I'll finish up reading it, though, if it I can manage to do it today or tomorrow.

Which is good. I like sad and grim.

also I while reading I imagined how a female Bedivere and Arthur would fit into the narrative and how certain characters would react--most notably Guinevere and Morgan.

Guinevere would willingly turn bisexual for Bedivere after discovering her true identity as a woman but see Arthur as an older sister like figure. Morgan would view both as friends, but Bedivere more so than Arthur.

Then, you know, I imagined what would happen in the 20+ yrs since then til the Battle of Camlann.

Guinevere would get rejected by Bedivere (in favor of her loyalty to Arthur) and turn to Lancelot, albeit reluctantly. She would come to resent Arthur because of this. Morgan would come to feel hurt by Bedivere (same reason as Guinevere, Bedivere's loyalty to Arthur supersedes all) and not only feel bitter about it but also come to dislike Arthur even more than she might have before and get closer to the idea of planning her downfall together with her older sister Morgause.

Of course I'm relating the above to my own story, so eh.

I can deal with sad and grim to a certain point, but then I get really exhausted from it. I enjoy conflict and tragedy that feel like they're interesting to think about, but there are limits on the amount of nihilism I actually can bring myself to care about.

I do that with stories, too, though -- try to relate them to something I want to do in a way that sort of feels like fitting puzzle pieces together. That is why I think fanfiction is a fun exercise, and I think the set up of Fate having these different historical and mythological people together in one place makes that especially fun and interesting. At least, when I'm feeling optimistic at all, I feel that way.

In pretty much all things where you can quantify success and failure, looking backward and understanding why you failed is always helpful.

Prix with a Silent X
February 11th, 2016, 01:48 AM
I think my problem is that I feel shut down when people talk to me about subjective opinions with a disagreement where I don't feel I'm being listened to or that I'm being made fun of. This is where I feel like a failure, which I don't think is an actual success/failure thing unless just doing what people want is success. Subjective things are harder to quantify.
