"I still don't fully understand what was the point of Shirou/Archer fight. It seems that Shirou just stubbornly refuted Archer and there is no good reason to think that he won't become Archer in the end. The whole thing was badly executed.

Oh, I admit that the pacing was so bad that I didn't really pay that much attention towards the end."

I'm assuming it's both an in class (lectures, presentations, and the like) and out of class (exhibits, field work, etc.) program? Yes? No?

Just wonderin' 'cause, you know, smaller classes are nice.

It's both in and out of class, but most of it is still projects and lectures. As for the number of people, we get divided into smaller groups for almost everything and yeah, it's nice and cozy and you can really learn a lot if the professor is okay.

oh, that, and working on this:

The Maid

“Jeanne, we’re falling behind.”

“Just a moment,” she softly replied, kneeling before the altar of the Lord in the chapel she never had the opportunity to visit all those years ago. Saying prayer and crossing herself, the warmth of God’s Light lifted her up and set her down on gentle pillows of cloud up in the sky. Her heart soared, and, content, she rose to her feet and smiled back. “I’m ready.”

“Then come on,” he called back, stand half in, half out, the door, behind the pastor who was so kind as to allow her entry past visiting hours.

After slipping on her jacket and zipping it up, she joined Cary outside in the mid-winter’s rain, thanking the pastor as she left. Pulling up her hood and coming alongside him, keeping an even pace, her breath came in a small puffs. “Thank you for waiting,” she said, as they continued to travel down the country road, ankle deep in snow.

“Don’t mention it. No, really, don’t.” He sniffed, wiping his nose with a finger and peering at the rolling white hills around. “The others are probably pissed. Took so long.”

She frowned. “I didn’t.” Turning to eye him, brows scrunched, she continued, “And, even if I did, the worry of all your sins being abolished, that feeling of release, it’s w—”

“No, not you,” he waved a hand, “the flight. I meant the flight.”

“What about it?” Other than that overly obnoxious brat whose mother and father or otherwise caretaker should have kept silent it was very pleasant. Travelling so close to God’s domain was a privilege. Though, she was also grumpily reminded of the brat kicking her seat for half the time. Therefore, it might be a privilege, but not a right—and no amount of divine intervention was ever going to change that.

“It took too long!” he huffed, container bumping against his shoulder as they trudged up a particularly steep slope, thumbing it with a grimace, “All because of this da—stupid—thing! Deadly weapon, my butt!”

“Even unactivated, you could still seriously bludgeon someone with it. The guards were right to hold us up for further inspection. They were only doing their job, just as any other—”

“Save it,” he groaned.

She grinned. “Then let’s change the subject.”

He slumped, giving her a cautious look, “To what?”

“Far more important than the flight, you left Flòraidh in Taiga’s care,”—it widened—“and you know what that means.”

“Yeah, Aoko’s gonna have my head. I realize that, but, what else was I supposed to do? Leave her with my dad?!” He flailed his arms around, a very dangerous gesture in such fatiguing conditions. “He’s just as bad! No, worse than Taiga!”

“And I’m not disagreeing with you, but it would’ve been best to bring him with us. If anyone’s going to be angered by your son’s absence, more-so than Aoko, it would be his godmother.”

“Please don’t remind me,” he said, keeping ahold of the strap to his container as they now traversed their way through a more rocky area.

Careful not to slip, he went to say something more but before he could manage to get a word the tied strings of his coat came loose, slapping him in the face as his fur hood was blown back. A sudden, harsh wind nearly toppled him over, and, placing a hand underneath his arm, helping him stay balanced, she asked if he was alright, but he just shook his head.

“Let’s… Let’s just focus on getting there, alright?” he heaved, hot air escaping winded lungs, pushing her away. “No more talking. Oh, and…”—a heavy breath—“... let me prepare myself before we go inside, this time. I don’t want broken ribs again.”

She nodded as he started to retie and refasten his strings and pull down his fur hood. “You needn’t worry,” she said once they resumed their trek, attention on the rest of the way to the castle, remembering that last time with a cringe.

Broken ribs were somewhat of an understatement.

With a strength no human could ever hope to match without some form of unnatural aid, the memory of that warrior woman flinging him across the room like a ragdoll to tumble and fall into the moat below came crashing through her thoughts. There was no telling what would happen if he didn’t have his son this second time around. Even if she were to hold back again.

It was days like this that she wished her Council was still with her, so that through her mouth they might offer their comforting words to ease his troubled mind, but knew that they never would be.

It wasn’t that they had abandoned her, no—Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine nor Saint Michael would never—but that her role as Jeanne the Maid, Messenger of God was long since complete. With her purpose fulfilled, they had simply returned to His Kingdom above, and, though she could no longer hear their sweet voices, see their sacred crowns, or feel their gentle touch, the three continued to watch over her, waiting for her destined transcendance into Paradise.

Whenever that may be.

For now, here, born anew in the modern world thanks to her summoning by Cary, there were two tasks yet left that she still had want to do. The chance to right the blood spilt in her kingdom’s past and, perhaps, have her wish, silly as it seemed, be granted. If even that chance were a sliver, it was enough for her. Then, she’d leave, but only then, and, looking at him now, she was also ever grateful for his kindness and understanding the past few years and could clearly see why his wife loved him so.

The way he carried himself—despite how he shivered and complained about the cold, whining his woes under his breath—was a saviour to her once shattered soul. Were it not for that bravery keep close to the surface of his clumsy and carefree nature, she would have long since broken down into despair.

Once more reminded of her companions, she maintained the belief that he would fit in merrily with the lot of them, especially Metz, Lord forever rest his soul—all of theirs—and smiled.

“What?” he asked, as they came before the rickety wooden bridge that was their only means into the castle.

The tides crashed on the cliffs far below, one misstep a bloody death on the rocks below, Jeanne wondered how the others were doing a world away, turning her smile away. “Nothing important.”

“Yeah, well, let’s just get this over with.”

As they crossed, memories of the past three years came flooding back.

The one behind the Sixth War was still imprisoned within the academy at Atlas, and with his magic circuits shut permanently that rendered him little more than a husk—a horrible thing to befall any magi, she’d been told—they were practically stumbling in the dark for answers, forced to track down all potential leads, no matter the insignificance, as to how he managed to gather and organize a Holy Grail War beneath the noses of everyone—and the reason behind why it still seemed to be going on. Not that she or her Master were doing anything to further that cause, in all honesty.

Standing before the castle portcullis, Cary huffed, rolled his shoulders, and slapped his cheeks. “Alright. I think I’m ready,” he said as it raised, a fuming mist seeping out at their arrival, curling around them like so many wisping hands, pulling them forward and along, through barren halls and empty rooms until they reached the throne room, its doors wide open.

In the center of its vast space, pacing forwards and backwards before the throne, was the ruler of Realm. “So,” she began, eying Cary with ire. “Where is he?”

“W… With his mother…” Cary replied sheepishly.

Scáthach raised a brow. “That so?”

“Y.. Yes.” Cary nodded, but Jeanne noticed he was farther away and half hidden behind her, than before.

“Is this true, girl?”

Jeanne looked from her to Cary, who was pale as a ghost, then also nodded her head. “It is.”

Hand on chin, the warrior seemed to mull it over, spear butt planted firm on the floor. Jeanne knew and had seen, or actually hadn’t seen, firsthand, how fast she could have it pressed against your throat and with it your life ended in one quick, clean, movement that to her was simply a flick of the wrist, and, while it would never happen to either of them, that didn’t mean she couldn’t inflict some other injury.

One that wouldn’t be especially pleasant.

From the spear’s point, a dark green liquid tricked from its barbed tip, and rolled down the riveted shaft, over her calloused fingers. It ate away at the skin of her hand, then dripped to the floor, creating sizzling wisps of poisonous steam.

Or maybe that was an understatement.

Regardless, the warrior paid it no mind, even as her bone became visible—and, not that she had any reason to, as well—and stood there for a few moments more. Jeanne watched as the harm done to her fingers simply vanished with the dark vapors that shed from her body, repairing it anew.

“I guess it’s for the best,” she said, though a bit of disappoint could be heard as she sighed then went to her thrown, beckoning them to follow.

If I can butt in here, one of the peculiarities of LGBT literature when one tries to make a genre of it (i.e. focusing on authors and books who make queer experiences their dominant focus, rather than incidental or even just of secondary concern) is that it's still distinctly in the process of unfurling, with relatively few exceptions of any quality. Queer literary culture is noticeably conservative and slow to change. As a legacy from the past, queer fiction still is pigeonholed - or pigeonholes itself - into some very restricted categories:

1) Porn. Is it a professionally published queer anthology? It's probably erotica. Presumably this is partly a consequence of the times when stable relationships were much harder to hold down in society (see previous point about queer conservatism) and partly a way to sell to a broader audience: grab the libidos of the bored housewives or the ... men ... as well as your actual gay audience.

2) Misery and woe to a Russian level. Light and fluffy (contemporary) queer romance functionally does not exist: if you're lucky, you might get a happy ending, but that's a toss-up, and in either case you're certainly going to be going through terrible homophobia, at least one suicide attempt, familial breakdown, and so on in addition to the usual romance tropes.

3) A third one I forgot. I might remember it at some point.

Five months later, I remembered the third category for this post. (Look, I was searching for a different post I'd made, and this one happened to come up).

3) Totally escapist works. Often sci-fi because, again, queer literary culture is still kind of stuck in the '60s and wholesale societal acceptance of homosexuality still seems to be considered far too implausible to just happen IRL. Here, either no-one cares about you being gay, or it's actually a dominant part of society, with the straights being a backwards curiosity. Almost always saccharine to a ludicrous degree, because once you've just wiped out the problems of intolerance, you might as well also eliminate anything else which is sad, discomfiting or stressful. Mediocre authors writing the most banal and unoriginal genre fiction get indulged rather too much here, just because they're providing the niche content that we want.

Kinda? Except in Genealogy it's an actual timeskip, and everyone's actually aged older and stuff, while in Awakening the children are time traveling from the future and all that. So they meet up with their younger parents.

While in Genealogy, a lot of the parents are too dead to meet their kids

But actually go play 4 and thracia, the battles are massive in scale(think whole countries), they first introduced skills, there were secret things that were super cool and unique and not replicated in later games like one dude could get +4 skill permanently if he went up on a cliff if he's not married and yells to the injustice of the world

The downside is a very basic if fucked up story, and no support conversations

Its supports are weird, the bonus XP is abusable af, forging is excessive and I refused to use it, way too much gold that weapon durability only matters for enemy-only drops
Supports are supports, they're mostly the same as the GBA titles, just slightly easier to build up. Bonus XP is for later recruits or clerics, it's a good addition so you don't have to tediously baby certain units. RD's limitation that it only bring up 3 stats was a good addition though. Forging is a gold dump and not usually worth it unless you're doing something nuts like the Solo Ike run, weapon durability has basically always been about keeping a basic stock+hording your good shit.

All I know is that my girlfriend had me play Path of Radiance and complained how she never got Aether to activate and never managed to beat the Black Knight so she never got what's-his-name dragon and then on my first playthrough of it she got to scream at me as Aether proc'd multiple times. I haven't actually played any other FE games.

I kinda sorta wanted to get into Fates but then I read about サイラス and fuck me all motivation went out the window.

You're right black1blade, whatever could be the matter?

Hermann Hesse describes this character, in contrast to his society, very aptly: “ His reality is something quite different from theirs. Their reality in his eyes is no more than a shadow, and it is by seeing and demanding a completely new reality that he becomes their enemy.” (Hesse 72). The allusion to Plato’s cave is also indicative of the deeper philosophical implications of a character such as Myskin, to whom intention and ideal are one and the same. He is not led astray by vice, nor destroyed by his own hypocrisies and misconceptions. Instead, Myshkin’s great conflict is the failure of society to receive him as he is, for his sincerity and dedication to the basic art of living a proper life are alien to ordinary people, to whom grace and wrath are both very natural and acceptable responses to a great deal of situations. Dostoevsky completes this study of a philosophical ideal in the very nature of the Prince’s thoughts, as at every turn he is not concerned with himself, but only with others. When he is being humiliated, when he is being attacked, even when his life is threatened he thinks primarily of the suffering of those around him. The prince is a very special individual, perhaps owing to his isolation and his poor health, as he has found a manner of living in which there is never a reason for him to deviate from his guiding principle (Hesse 74). Therefore, it is appropriate to say that he is a perfect example of Dostoevsky’s style. This character’s thoughts directly produce his action, as indeed there is never a difference between them. The incredible absence of any hypocrisy, any shred of self-denial makes him almost divine, for the gods are unwavering in principle, and men to ever contradict themselves.

See, another shipgirl fiend right here. Probably describing Bismarck imo.
Every ship knows the feeling of fire, of the inferno within and the sharp fever pitch of cannon fire.

And a few know the sensation of sinking, as water gushes into the deepest chambers and floods past the warped bulkheads.

They go cold, extinguished, to know fire ne'er again.

Speaking of Kancolle, I gave up writing fan-fiction for it because all anyone wanted to read about was [insert Admiral self-insert here] x [insert ship girl(s) here] or [insert ship girl here] x [insert ship girl here] and well... the usual stuff.

Also there were too many ship girls to pick from and I didn't feel like doing the research and blah blah.

At first I did it as a sci-fi thing where the enemy ships (abyssals?) were some abandoned remnants of an alien technology that the ship girls were based off of and blah blah that was just in the background really to the main plot of "what it means to be human" and all that stuff. It focused on Shiranui being this logical, but cold-hearted leader of an all but decimated task force consisting of... jeez I can't even remember anymore (let's see, Chikuma, Tone, Hatsushimo, Kiso, uhh one or two others) who is left to deal with the aftermath as she and what remains of her unit are put under the command of a new Admiral fresh out of the academy.

Nobody cared for it apart the scenes where I have her seeing a Chikuma suffering from hallucinations of Tone and all around severe PTSD as a waste of resources and that it's better to have her decommissioned for parts n' stuff, clashing with the new Admiral who tries to help and not abandon her. Also there were her spats with Tenryuu. Tenryuu being Shiranui's only friend--though it's more like Tenryuu butts in where she's not wanted.

I dunno. I stopped like 10,000 words in or so 'cause like I said, it wasn't harem or yuri or got shit like "this is graphic" and "shiranui is such an asshole" and blah blah...

that's the gist of it, anyway

It also should be noted that the only reason I was inspired to write the story was because of Hetza's drawings. I really like his work.

EDIT:

Here's a bit from Chikuma's POV (it's a good thing I saved parts of the story I wrote instead of tossing it out):

Spiraling, swirling and colliding with the waves of mental anguish... she wanted to sink further into the dark depths of what used to be a warm heart.

What are you doing here all by your lonesome? She averted her eyes. “I'm such a...” You shouldn't wallow in those sad thoughts, you know. “I couldn't...” Shielding her eyes, she didn't want to look at her. You were afraid. A tear rolling down her cheek, she grit her teeth. “If only I had...” Now, you have the resolve to not let it happen again. So, it's ok. “But, I... I'm...” Don't let those things get to you, you hear me? Learn to smile again, you got that? Biting her lip, she wouldn't look. “I miss you.”

Sitting on her knees in her quarters, she wanted to drown in the memories of her forever, but knew she couldn't dwell on what she'd lost—what they'd all lost. There was a rapping on the metal door behind her, closed for privacy, and she lifted her head.

“Chiku, Shiranui told me to tell you the new commander is coming today. She wants to hold a meeting with all of us.”

“Dear sister... I wonder what he's like?” she whispered to the wall. He's someone that can help you smile again. “Is he?” Get up and stop being spending all your time wasting away locked up. Go on. “Will I be alright?” Yes, now go.

Hand on the doorhandles to her quarters, Chikuma inhaled deeply. Sliding it open, she looked down upon the short destroyer with a forced smile. Hatsushimo grabbed her by the wrist.

“Come on,” she chirped, fluttering to the table like a baby bird leading its mother. “Sit down.” She grasped her forearm and eased her into the chair directly across from Shiranui. Their temporary commander's eyes were distant, staring into the abyss as she seemed to be contemplating something deeply.

Chikuma glanced around the table. Kiso was to her right, arms crossed and expression sour. The eyepatch on her eye was no longer a plain black. Instead, it was now a dark green, outlined by gold stitching that ran diagonal twice and horizontal once. Hatsushimo had seated herself to her left, and was fiddling with her uniform, as carefree was ever. The three of them sat there in silence until Shiranui seemed to snap back to reality, her eyes focusing on the scene before her.

They flickered to Hatsushimo, “You did well in retrieving her.”

“T-thanks...” She made no eye-contact.

Kiso clicked her tongue. “Look at the commander when she's speaking with you.”

The response was barely a whisper, “B-but... she looks so scary today...”

Shiranui's eyes softened, “Sorry, Hatsushimo. There's nothing to be afraid of.”

Hatsushimo smiled. “I know.” Looking up now, it was bright as the mid-morning sun.

Shiranui turned to her then, “Chikuma, how are you feeling?”

“Fine.”

“Are you sure?”

A nod. “Yes.”

Shiranui gave a glance to Kiso. “Then, let's begin.” Producing a letter, she set it in the table's center. “This is a letter from our new commander—the one the Grand Admiral has assigned to us. It appears that he is transferring in from the 3rd Fleet along with a subordinate.”

“Who is it?” Kiso asked, an arm now resting on the table. “The subordinate.”

“A Takao-class heavy cruiser.”

“One of the heavy hitters, huh...”

“With this new addition, and once Wakaba's out of repairs, we'll have over half of the original task force in commission.” She tapped the letter. “If any of you would like to read the letter, feel free to do so. It's just a formal pre-introduction.”

“I'll pass.” Kiso spat, her arms crossed once again as she now leaned back in her chair. “Anything else we need to know about?”

Shiranui shook her head. “No. You're free to leave at any time. That goes for you two as well, Hatsushimo and Chikuma.”

Hatsushimo was busy reading the letter, squinting. “He writes small. Does that mean he has small hands?” Her face drooped. “The words are... confusing...” She looked over at her with puffed cheeks, “Say, Chiku, you're a fast reader. Read this to me!”

The letter now being shoved in her face, Chikuma's eyes migrated closer to her nose to get a clear view.

27 November 2234
KANCOLLE NAVAL DEPARTMENT
THIRD FLEET

From: Commander of Takao-class Heavy Cruiser Maya, Third Fleet

To: Officer in Charge, First Fleet, Task Force #33
(1) Task Forces members

Subj: Letter of Introduction

In correspondence with my transfer to First Fleet, I will be starting my duties as your task force commander within a twelve-hour period. Therefore, I would just like to say that it will be my utmost pleasure in working with you all and I am greatly looking forward to the opportunity given to me by the Grand Admiral. He has also requested the heavy cruiser under my command, Maya, to be transferred with me. Thus, I hope that you all can get along and are respective of one another, as from now on you'll be working together under my command.

Let's work hard to make up for what was lost.

Most sincerely,

Stanley J. Rizzo

“Well, well, Chiku?! What's it say?!”

“He's looking forward to working with us,” she relayed. Peering over the letter, she saw Hatsushimo's smile glow even brighter.

“See! I told you he'd been a nice person!” She aimed her smile at Kiso, and the light cruiser seemed to cover her sole remaining eye with her forearm, as if it were blinding her with its intensity.

“Yeah, yeah. That doesn't mean he still isn't a pussy.”

Shiranui got up from the table. “Regardless, we'll get our answers in the morning. In the meantime, all of you get back to your duties and make sure to be presentable when the time comes. Whoever this man turns out to be, I don't want us to look like a bunch of misfits.” Her eyes focused to somewhere behind them—Tone's quarters. “Chikuma, you read the letter in full, so tell me what 'let's work hard to make up for what was lost' means for us.”

Chikuma met her eyes, trying to make her own unreadable as the destroyer searched their murky depths. “He wants to rebuild the task force back to its original strength.”

“That's right.” Her head seemed to dip forward, “Will you allow that void to be filled?” She came around the table and now stood directly before her, looking down like an omnipotent god. No... more like a mother chiding her child or a devil reaching out to feed off her despair and take it into herself; to bear the burden of her pain for her. “You've spent long enough apologizing to ghosts, wouldn't you agree?”

Her eyes quickly darted to her elder counterpart's quarters. “I...” She bowed her head, “Yes.”

“Whoever this man turns out to be, Chikuma, I want you to return to your old self once again. As you are now, you're nothing but a useless tin can. Above all else, we mustn't show any weakness in front of that bastard's lapdog. Fix it, no matter the toll.” Without pause, she went to Kiso, “Kiso, come with me, there's a matter I want to discuss before you do anything else.”

Chikuma kept her head lowered as Shiranui and Kiso left, only looking up upon feeling a hand on her shoulder. Hatsushimo was leaning over it, cheek brushing her hair.

“Cheer up, Chiku. Shiranui just doesn't want you to feel sad anymore!” She let go and twirled around to stand in front of her, scratching her cheek. “E-even if she isn't the best at expressing it, she cares about you!”

She smiled faintly, “Thanks, Hatsushimo.” The petite destroyer gave a cutesy nod and went off to her duties, leaving her alone.

Chikuma looked back to her elder counterpart's quarters. Stop apologizing to ghosts, she said. This new commander was the person that could help her regain what was lost, she had to have hope.
