I've never seen Sucker Punch so I can't comment with full context, but I think that it is one of those things (from what I've gathered from discussion of it) some people think crosses so far past a bad attempt at what it is trying to do that it becomes good again or relatable to them at least. I have an extremely vague notion of what it's about, but isn't the film's title itself some kind of reference to what it's trying to do? Like when I've heard girls in particular talk about liking it, it seems to come from this place of feeling like that it has something to say to them about being seen through a lens that is inherently not feminist or something and then turning it around on those who view them in that light. Like, I'm not saying that's an easy to access view on it, and I haven't seen it to make a determination on whether or not I can relate to that reading of it. But isn't the "Sucker Punch" supposed to be to the audience? "You were enjoying this trashy female objectification porn, but it turns out you're supposed to feel like it punched you in the stomach?" If that is what it is going for (which I seem to have been suggested) I can see how that would be an extremely difficult premise to carry, though.

Yes that is what Snyder wants you to think Sucker Punch is about.
It's not, but that's what his supposed "this is a FEMINIST film" argument is about.
The weird thing is that I have heard opinions from some girls where they actually buy this reading of it. But then, the person whose commentary I'm thinking of the most also had this tendency to want to wring feminist readings out of things that were inherently not-feminist because it made her feel better, or something? It was like that she was finding this reading of something that wasn't supposed to work but which worked for her. Which, I mean, is not a wrong way to enjoy fiction in my opinion.
Like, the same person did commentary about the movie Black Swan that was similar. In that movie, the only f/f stuff is presented from a kind of "I want to sexualize you because I want to be you," point of view, but she kind of constructed this argument that the movie itself and even the horror elements of it were more palatable if you viewed the main character as a queer woman whose resistance of her sexual identity and need to conform to a heteronormative power structure of needing to sleep her way into the first ballerina position. Which... is certainly a way to read the movie? But it is very obviously not the actual intent of the film.
I just find it odd that other women would buy Snyder's argument if it's patently not true.

much obliged in any case.
I've been looking around on japanese boards and it seems like they've got no idea what 根賞ね is supposed to mean either. most compelling theory I've found is that it's a typo for 性根
yeah, shortening ない endings to ん is something I've encountered a lot in reading Mishima's Patriotism in the original. found often in brusque, masculine speech patterns
yeah 性根 makes sense.

That's not what my Film & Politics prof said
- - - Updated - - -
I've never seen it but I'm not on unlimited internet plan so I'm in, on the understanding that I will probably find it vile and awful and get the right to complain as long and loudly as I want.
I think that it is justifiable both to consider authorial/artistic intent behind a work and to have a sort of on-the-other-hand consideration of what it means to you as an individual, even if it runs counter to what you were supposed to get out of it. When an artist releases their work to the world, there is a degree to which they are releasing it to interpretation that was not something they wanted or intended. However, if what an author intended is something offensive or suspect, then I think that there is a certain need to be aware of that even if you find some way to enjoy it (for example, like women who actually enjoy Sucker Punch, I'm gathering -- or Black Swan, since I actually saw that).
As far as Glow's professor goes, I can't speak for that person, but I think it's worth remembering that any American academic or person educated by American academic opinions is likely to have at least some influence of New Criticism, either for or against it. At its worst, New Criticism encourages an approach that completely divorces a work from its authorship, that author's intent, and any kind of historical or cultural factors which might have led to its production. Reaction to New Criticism then might become entirely obsessed with insisting that it is impossible to have an alternative interpretation of something to the person who had a hand in making it. I don't think either approach is entirely true and that it is possible to enjoy something for a reason other than what the author intended and to have a subversive interpretation of something.
I can't think of a really great example, and this one might be laughable as a "serious" one, but the only example I can draw off the top of my head is Carmilla. The original novella certainly presented a lesbian vampire, but the nature of such a thing was presented as pathological, antisocial, evil, horrific, etc. Then, in the past couple of years a tampon company has funded a web series that is a very pro-LGBT interpretation of that thing which would make J. Sheridan Le Fanu roll over his his grave, probably. The fact that it began as something intended to instill shock and horror that has since come to be viewed through a lens that is extremely sympathetic to the lesbian vampire would only ever happen if it is possible to view something through a sort of upgrading lens, but that doesn't mean that one can turn around and suggest that Le Fanu was a pro-lesbian feminist in his age.

I agree with the caveat that I do, to some extent, anthropomorphize and psychoanalyze my dogs.
I think that it is a pretty useless endeavor to condemn a work that you like because you found out you hate the author('s politics, etc.). However, I think that if people do like something produced by an author who is pretty gross in their intent for that work or who is pretty gross behind the scenes in some significant way that there are individuals who will go out of their way to sanitize the image of that creator in their minds. I think that it's a reactionary thing that people do in order to continue to feel good about themselves and their tastes -- to avoid ever considering whether or not something they like is intended to say something that is bad or comes from the pen/mouth/whatever of a person who says or does something bad. They don't want to wonder whether or not that is the case because they think that continuing to like that thing would make them bad, and it's hard to control why particular art speaks to us, regardless of where it came from.
However, I think that just being totally free of any kind of consideration when there is something of note to be considered is a kind of equally obstinate view. Sometimes, the whole culture/thought/person behind the genesis of something is bogged down with so many bad things that I think it's hard to pretend that it is an entirely innocent artform, even if there's some element of it that "speaks to you." For example, I find many elements of Beat Culture extremely distasteful, but that doesn't mean if I just read something by a beat poet that I wouldn't like it. Even if I liked it, that wouldn't change my list of issues with Beat Culture.

Spend hours in training mode endlessly grinding out the timing for this obscure gimmick "mixup" with j236 series.
It'll never be applicable or useful in a real match because it's a gimmick that transcends gimmicks. I know this, but I keep doing it. I repeat it over and over again. Ambiguous blockstrings full of stagger into the godbutton 6[C] IAD j.b 236a (1 frame from ground) 6ad. It's pointless Spinach. You've never managed to create the situation where it's useful. You need a long, serious set with somebody to even make it work. You have to condition. Do j.b pressure into tk 236b over and over, until they expect it, then go for the feint. And the reward? A grab. One grab. Roa's grab doesn't even do much damage. I don't even use it as a tool for damage. It's just there to damage morale and linger in the back of the other guy's mind. Why do I keep practicing this gimmick? I can't stop. That's why. I'm stubborn. This HAS to be applied to a real match before I can ever stop practicing it. It HAS to be. There's no way this isn't viable. This HAS to be useful in some way. I swear to god.
- - - Updated - - -
I'm losing my mind and my fingertips hurt.
- - - Updated - - -
No, it's actually genius. Nobody uses j236, so nobody knows it can do this. I'm literally pioneering gimmicks. This will be standard play in a year, mark my words. Who identifies 236 and tries to TECH a throw? Obviously you block. It's FREE damage. You just have to do it, but that's fine. It's easy to condition with good use of j.b and tk. It's not even bad, j.b tk236b takes out a lot of guard gauge. It's fucking amazing. It ends pressure, but the pushback gives you safe range to 214b/a to catch jumpouts. You just spend a match applying pressure like that. So smart, holy shit. I'm so smart.
I DID THE FUCKING MIXUP AND HE TECHED IT, I'M SO MAD

I got sorted into the group led by the worst, most insane urban planning mentor, and so far no one from any other group wants to switch with me.
I've had this guy as a mentor before and I don't think I can bear the yelling, threats, outbursts and daily humiliations again.

Oh shit. Try to keep your chin up right now and I will be hoping that someone will switch with you.

That sounds awful.
I know what it's like to have bad teachers. You have my sympathy, but no hugs.

But also, in my experience dealing with insanely difficult people, my advice if you can't switch is to use this as a learning opportunity for building resistance to horrible personalities. I've had to live with really emotionally trying people for years before. I like to think it's helped my resilience and my ability to keep a smile on my face in professional situations when I'm dealing with unmanageable sorts.

True. But the fact that I got a literal panic attack when I saw the list means that this probably doesn't bode well for my mental health.

I very much understand that. Message me on Skype if you ever need or want advice on managing anxiety and panic attacks and stuff. I'm not a professional obviously but I've developed a lot of tricks that help me deal with Life In General without people noticing.

what if, suddenly, the world changed and now whenever someone claps their hands, a person nearby dies. what would happen to society. would it crumble. would the government force anti-clap measures onto everyone, like making us wear heavy mittens.

Humans would go extinct because you can't control babies.

Then humans would go extinct because you would create a society of people who are in some measure deformed and are severely hindered in self-sufficiency.

Well, then you have to get into the semantics of clapping. Is it only the skin-smack noise? Is it the action? The motion?
If its the skin-smack noise, would the effects transfer if someone were to, say, smack their thigh?
And if it's the motion, then you're still fucked.
