What about movies, though? Would the claps in movies still kill people?

however only one person dies with each clap for some reason

But is a clap the single clap or is it the entire period that someone is clapping their hands?

movies of people clapping don't kill people because that'd be bad

single clap = one death. if someone ran into a building and started clapping non-stop it'd be call a clapping and everyone around them would die. however, it's completely random so it's possible the clapper will kill himself

The actors had to clap for it to be in the movie. Sesto, stop with the morose thought experiments.

However, I think that if people do like something produced by an author who is pretty gross in their intent for that work or who is pretty gross behind the scenes in some significant way that there are individuals who will go out of their way to sanitize the image of that creator in their minds. I think that it's a reactionary thing that people do in order to continue to feel good about themselves and their tastes -- to avoid ever considering whether or not something they like is intended to say something that is bad or comes from the pen/mouth/whatever of a person who says or does something bad. They don't want to wonder whether or not that is the case because they think that continuing to like that thing would make them bad, and it's hard to control why particular art speaks to us, regardless of where it came from.

Obviously, this isn't a reason to consider whose pen it is: much the opposite, really.

However, I think that just being totally free of any kind of consideration when there is something of note to be considered is a kind of equally obstinate view. Sometimes, the whole culture/thought/person behind the genesis of something is bogged down with so many bad things that I think it's hard to pretend that it is an entirely innocent artform, even if there's some element of it that "speaks to you." For example, I find many elements of Beat Culture extremely distasteful, but that doesn't mean if I just read something by a beat poet that I wouldn't like it. Even if I liked it, that wouldn't change my list of issues with Beat Culture.

The problem is that this basically confuses the issue - it treats any individual work not as such but as a sociological document which has to answer for its time. If the particular reasons and problems one has with the 'source' don't come through, then they aren't operative, and if they do, then this is a non-issue since there needs to be no appeal beyond text. And this is something you're admitting yourself with Beat Culture, even - liking a poet who comes from a certain body of work is not a blank cheque endorsement of the latter. So you tell me, when does it matter? Because there's really only one use case.

Are you suggesting that we should entirely ignore a work's authorship when evaluating the work?

An individual work of prose or poetry or whatever else is an individual object that is generally presented as something that exists for artistic or entertainment value. It is not a sociological document in its own right, nor is it intended to be. It does not necessarily have to answer for its time. However, it did not come to exist in a vacuum that is completely independent from its authorship, the time and place in which that author lives, and what these factors make that author believe. I agree that if an author does not express his/her particular problematic viewpoint in a particular text/etc. that said text can be viewed for what it does contain and itself does not bear the weight of what it doesn't. However, when something does contain a reflection of the views of the author that one might take issue with, it is not unfair to try and understand where those thoughts came from and why they are there. It is not necessarily true that you will be right in your analysis or observations, especially where dead authors are concerned, but to ignore analysis because it cannot be perfect obstructs any kind of discussion of a work of art for what it is in its natural context.

Even if I like an individual poem from a Beat poet doesn't mean that I like that poet as a whole individual and it certainly doesn't mean that I endorse the movement/culture behind it. It is true that you can view a work of art without any attempt to follow it back to the pen of its author. I think it is fine to do so. However, I think that actively rejecting any attempt to understand offensive or problematic (as much as the word is overused) art or viewpoints expressed in art based on how that art came to be is some kind of unnatural separation between production and producer. I'm not sure why one would put it in place in the first place unless it is admitting an insecurity on the part of the reader/viewer of that work to be able to acknowledge that the well from which this was drawn might be a little less than clean. That doesn't necessarily mean if the work itself is "clean" that one can't continue to enjoy it, but if there are parts of something that come across as potentially sour or damaging to a mindset in the reader, how is it useful to pretend that the author had nothing to do with what is in his or her work?

Context matters when there is controversy. Context matters when something is influential. Context matters when a work of art is important enough to an individual to do something to move or change them. Even if one takes a work of art, consciously divorces it from its original context, and revolutionizes the intent in some response to that artwork (as in my silly Carmilla example), it does matter that one understand that response to a work and intent of a work are in fact distinct. You may rightly prioritize response over intent, but that doesn't mean intent doesn't exist and has no impact.

well you can

the suggestion is what you aim for

historical categorization of a roman a clef is gonna be a bit, lets call it unscientific, if you apply your own semiotic standards

of course we cant ever manage to get a perfect recreation of an authors psyche even if they are still alive but approximation is a good friend to knowledge

in that case the historical/autobiographical context is essential to the understanding of the work, its just the most obvious example

Oh, okay. That phrasing makes more sense to my tiny brain.

And this observation is true, but when you get an author whose work has had a broad impact such that their personalities get elevated and idealized too, then you might run into a problem when the art culture they are a part of promotes violence, theft, and generally being an asshole. Hence my problem with Beat poets and the generations of Kerouac aficionados they have produced ever since.

That's a matter of whether or not you want to make it your problem. If it doesn't affect you, why care?

This is kind of a thing about whether or not "academia" or "the Establishment" or whatever other label you want to put on something of that nature matters. Some people who find themselves offended by the cultural "canon" just completely ignore it and remove themselves from the picture. However, what happens when you just opt for total apathy about this kind of thing is that the vestige of academia (or whatever) that remains will only have it confirmed unto itself that it was right, that all those other people were just phonies, or whatever. If you completely let go of unified cultural tradition as preserved through an academic culture or the like, then you are headed for some kind of intellectual landscape that is completely devoid of any common landmarks for future students/people. However, if nothing ever challenges those things that are glorified by that academic culture, nothing about that academic culture will ever change, and if it does not change then those who have firm opinions about why it is "wrong" will continue to distance themselves from that culture. Then you get a lot of very intelligent people who have useful things to say about the culture around them and the culture preceding them who have no voice because they have either been purposefully disenfranchised by those who are upholding traditions or they have distanced themselves form it because of disagreement with those people.

Tl;dr, on the one hand, I don't think it matters. Live and let live, etc. On the other hand, I don't like to see academia shriveling away into an incestuous, irrelevant, and dying institution that refuses to affirm people who question the things it currently recognizes as of greater value than others so as to receive unqualified praise. Or: Why the hell were all my English professors coming their pants over On the Road?

release me
Well, yesterday I spent half of my workday browsing the net.
Including porn on phone.

- - - Updated - - -

That being said I have two seminars to organize in six weeks so at the start of April I'll probably want to kill myself as well

Instead of writing a full length fic I feel as though I should just write some small drabbles for now.

That's a good place to start. If you can do concise, it's good to work like that at first.

But no, I don't currently have a cat. I want a cat, but the place we're renting only allows us one pet. It is very sad.

Also when you get a guinea pig, it's recommended to get more than one because they're social animals or something, which is also more work probably

and then they put their front half in and they're like
