This 6 bedroom place which always seemed too packed now feels too empty.

It depends how deep you study it. We are studying the fundamental theory behind what it means to compute something.
Programming itself is not too hard, but when you try to reason and understand what you are doing, it can get hard.

Even my university says previous experience is not needed, but is useful.

I only knew Visual Basic before I started, which we didn't even use.
We were taught Haskell, Java, C, C++, Prolog and SQL on my course so far.

I remember having a photoshop class in either late high school or early college where the entire grade was based on like 10 sets of pictures where you were supposed to photoshop one to look like the other. I usually just copied the image, renamed the file, etched in a few parts so it wasn't a perfect copy and called it done.

It really depends where you are. I learned Quark, html, VB, Bryce 3-D, Fireworks, Corel Paint/Draw, Illustrator and Photoshop back in High School. Later on in college I had to relearn html, but we never went back to VB either. It's also where i got started with CSS and Flash, and a multitude of other things.

Though I'll be honest, I always need to go back and do tutorials to refresh myself during projects. So in that sense, I am a bit slow.
