The parts where you notice a thing that influenced other things in science fiction you grew up with and love, and was used here for the first time, are fun. Imagining the cultures and ecosystems that were really lovingly described is fun.
Paul and his momma are a bore though.

I think some of Paul's more interesting moments in the book are coming up, while Jessica's going to decline in importance shortly. Paul will drop off again, but his role in the next parts are worth it IMO.

Most of what I dislike about him is the result of him being the result of generations of careful breeding and knowing it. If anything, I can appreciate the absence of 'you're a wizard Harry' in his personal success story. He knows what he's there for.
I can like him as a character without liking him as a person, I hope.

Paul is a fundamentally tragic character, yes. He's not only the result of a breeding and education that accurate to make him a perfect application of determinism, but because of the way prescience works his powers lock him on a future which he detests and fears yet cannot avoid.
Tbh this only becomes important in Messiah. In Dune he's a pampered boy who loses everything thanks to politics and gets his victory because he's so good at everything.

Ignore or not, the first book is a story of Paul's triumph. It's Messiah where you actually experience how fucked he is and that'll rake up sympathy points much faster than quasimystical mumbo jumbo of visions of an emergent god.

Ignore or not, the first book is a story of Paul's triumph. It's Messiah where you actually experience how fucked he is and that'll rake up sympathy points much faster than quasimystical mumbo jumbo of visions of an emergent god.Surely not.
"Here was the unborn jihad, he knew. Here was the race consciousness that he had known once as his own terrible purpose. Here was reason enough for a Kwisatz Haderach or a Lisan al-Gaib or even the halting schemes of the Bene Gesserit. The race of humans had felt its own dormancy, sensed itself grown stale and knew now only the need to experience turmoil in which the genes would mingle and the strong new mixtures survive. All humans were alive as an unconscious single organism in this moment, experiencing a kind of sexual heat that could override any barrier. And Paul saw how futile were any efforts of his to change any smallest bit of this. He had thought to oppose the jihad within himself, but the jihad would be. His legions would rage out from Arrakis even without him. They needed only the legend he already had become. He had shown them the way, given them mastery even over the Guild which must have the spice to exist. A sense of failure pervaded him, and he saw through it that Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen had slipped out of the torn uniform, stripped down to a fighting girdle with a mail core."
The finale of Dune is Paul's utter failure. Every apparent success, everything that his followers see as glorious triumph, are trappings over the truth that he's given humanity over to slaughter - and those deceptive trappings are exactly what's leading them on toward that slaughter. What do Gurney and Stilgar, the good and simple 'old faithfuls' see in Paul's defeat of Feyd-Rautha? The Atreides overcoming the Harkonnen, white overcoming black. What's the reality? The Harkonnen na-Baron is Paul's uncle; in fact, Paul has as at least as good a claim to the Barony as Feyd, being born directly of the Baron's line instead of a younger demi-brother. He's Paul's brother, a parallel point on the Kwisatz Haderach breeding line, save that he didn't have Paul's Bene Gesserit training and spice overdoses - and the Fenrings explicitly discuss how similar they are. Had Paul been a girl, they would have married and she would have borne Feyd the 'true' Kwisatz Haderach. And Paul leaves him dead on the floor.
And Gurney and Stilgar, what have they become at the end? 'Creatures of the Lisan al-Gaib', not friends. Thufir dies in his arms. His child dies far from his arms. Chani weeps, and he can only feel grief through her, and even then he has to dignify Irulan as his wife while only holding his love as a concubine. Shaddam, whom he robs of all titles and dignity, is yet another kinsman - a fact which Paul insists on during the confrontation.
Dune's ending strips and flays Paul.

August 12th, 2016, 12:23 PM
You can interpret most of his personal losses and angst as typical hero's journey stuff. I would disagree that there is no personal triumph at the end, because he's in a position to build the future as he sees fit, with a worry that this might not be as possible as it would seem.
I think we're also focusing on a bit different trains of thought. I think Dune is not a very easy read. It's quite cerebral and it's characters often emotionally distant from the reader. You need to 'get' that Paul is sympathetic. I mostly want to suggest that it's easier in Messiah, because he's in a seemingly invulnerable position.

While above is answer to Bridge it stands to Seika as well. A lot of what you wrote is either future problems to solve in the first book or something that Paul doesn't even seem to mind all that much because iirc we don't get that much about it in his personal thoughts. So again this is not a readily available personal tragedy, but one that needs to be reasoned out or interpreted that way (with hindsight bias as a factor).

What in my post is yet to come by the end of Dune?
I'll rebut one bit of Bridge's post, though:
The ominous foreshadowing of Fremen softness seems to be anticipated and prepared against by Paul in the first book.
‘And what of Arrakis?’ the Emperor asked. ‘Another garden world full of gentle things?’
‘The Fremen have the word of Muad’Dib,’ Paul said. ‘There will be flowing water here open to the sky and green oases rich with good things. But we have the spice to think of, too. Thus there will always be desert on Arrakis … and fierce winds, and trials to toughen a man. We Fremen have a saying: “God created Arrakis to train the faithful.” One cannot go against the word of God.’

It's certainly true that Dune isn't an emotive reading that, so to say, speaks to the heart. But if one wants to ignore all the very visible losses that strike Paul as either "part of the narrative deal" or conscious economic choices for the attaining of his satisfaction curve, well, it's probably time to go out and breathe some fresh air.
Im certain you could've lived without the fresh air comment. That aside the rest of universe is something that is only referenced, fremen are the people that are encountered. As for his losses the very fact that this is a formulaic story in a cold universe makes you more numb and accepting towards people dying.

Write that down to me reading diagonally on phone while eating dinner so I apologize.
The first part of your post is hard to sympathize with. It's a philosophical statement and we see it's true effects in later books, solidifying Paul's failure which is why I point to Messiah.
The second part, you're already putting this forth in a more passionate, emotionally engaging manner then I remember the book doing. That could be the problem of my memory though.

The approach being perhaps less science and more fiction. Seeing that it's okay to mesh the implications of culture and religion with a futuristic plot, and that they could jump thousands of years into the future and thus have more artistic freedom without having to tie everything neatly to current levels of scientific progress and the known universe, must've been liberating.

I see significance in the terminology at the end, and that Atreides-Corrino blood relation, precisely because it's a little buried, and therefore the revelation is more important.
To explain: it could be one of the Imperium's affectations: family titles are used between Great Houses no matter if they lack shared ancestry. One of the Baron's minions complains that Leto's declaration of vendetta doesn't address his lord as 'cher cousin'. But what does Mohiam understand when Paul accepts Feyd's challenge - each now Duke and Baron of their respective houses, exactly as Leto and Vladimir were, carrying on that same vendetta? "The Atreides youth had called the Harkonnen cousin. It could only mean he knew the ancestry they shared". The Imperial Truthsayer tells us that what pretends to courtesy in this room is nothing of the sort: these enemies deal in facts. And so we have to look beyond Paul's claiming of simple Great House status and remember that "the Baron cannot forget that Leto is a cousin of the royal blood – no matter what the distance – while the Harkonnen titles came out of the CHOAM pocketbook." Shaddam is Paul's family in truth, and his usurpation is another part of all the violence that the unstoppable jihad does to Paul.
As to Feyd, yes, Paul feels no brotherhood with him, and only gets that flash from Fenring. But Fenring himself says of Feyd, "You know, when you think what this lad could’ve been with some other upbringing – with the Atreides code to guide him, for example." Between that and the various other direct parallels of lineage (genetic and otherwise), I think it's necessary to consider Feyd as a reflection of Paul or a potential (husband to) Paul at least as much as an enemy: if in no sense other than the symbolic, there's a hurt done to Paul with his death.
(While we're thinking over Imperial family at the end, it's worth flipping over the page from the final bit of narrative to the appendix, and looking at Leto's entry, which begins "A distaff cousin of the Corrinos", and Fenring's entry, which begins "A distaff cousin of House Corrino". Links everywhere).
