I generally have a problem with characters who act as moral shackles to disturbed, byronic protagonists. This is because I don't see the point of them even being characters, as opposed to a beautiful sofa or a houseplant which could, with the right framework, serve the same purpose.

A reverse gender example that comes to mind is Berserk's Casca, but at least Berserk establishes her as a character of her own merit, we know who she is, and she's actually treated, in a way, equally and with respect. This makes it quite clear why she serves as a 'morality pet' to the protagonist, her role makes sense, we feel for her because we care for her, not because the protag does and we're sorta expected to as well. Not that her story isn't handled really bad at certain points, but lack of respect for Casca the person is definitely not an issue in Berserk.

Also, Mikiya's normality being treated as a deformity of sorts by the story, not in a 'he's weird for being normal' way, necessarily, but something that the story almost...laments?

Speaking anime-only here, but his entire dynamic with Enjou is a huge wasted potential. In a way they're the same, but fundamentally different. Mikiya, who embraces being unremarkable, while we actively know he's neither unremarkable nor replaceable, and Enjou, who was made to be unimportant and replaceable and a nobody, but fights it with every fiber of his being. The story even treats this with due respect, showing us a struggle that was his and his alone, basically from beginning to end.

Enjou is masterstroke, basically.
