Speaking of books, I finished reading The Great Gatsby last week and I have to say a few things:

- Despite being a bootlegger, Gatsby was a more compassionate and better person than most of the rich people in the book, particularly the Buchanans.
- Rich people are a snobbish, spineless and careless lot and you'll be cleaning up their mess no sooner they leave.
- Some women in the world are just not worth the time and effort you invest in making yourself the ideal man they want or are looking for. They're clueless, banal and foolish bitches.
- If you're looking for a well done and written satire about the American Dream and the 1920s, this book is for you.

Yeah, I remember reading the Great Gatsby in high school. One of the most interesting things (maybe not interesting, but something that stuck with me) I found was that in spite of Gatsby's compassion, his work to be ideal was empty. His massive store of books still had the glue intact--old school books didn't have binding as we know it, they had a layer of glue shutting them wholly. You used something like a letter opener to cut the glue/free the pages as you read them. Almost all of Gatsby's books weren't cut. Or maybe I'm confusing characters because it was so long ago, but yeah, bitches be bitches, and even if you do everything perfectly, life doesn't necessarily go your way. And no matter how much you try to maintain appearances, if you aren't being yourself, it'll break apart. I liked it, though it isn't a re-read level book for me.

For example a lot of old poems and short stories we had to read in school were rather...underwhelming, but when I had to read "The Royal Game" (what a shitty English name) I was honestly pretty impressed on the whole part were he "explains his insanity". I really felt that there is something in literature that I have been missing because I always thought it to be "overhyping" of outdated classics and modern literature being retardedly pretentious.

Still never really started reading higher literature except for the stuff we have to because of school.

most of the basic stuff they make you read tends to be more along the lines of the "retardedly pretentious" kind
which is why they're teaching it to high schoolers =_=

although you do sometimes find those rare gems
i think a good bit of what we read for AP lit was of the latter, and while a lot of it i didn't necessarily like, i will admit they were really great

The only books I actually read all of high school were Scarlet Letter and Tom Sawyer.

I enjoyed reading Lord of the Flies, surprisingly. Just didn't like going LOOK EVERYONE THIS KID IS JESUS, AND THIS KID IS HUMANS, AND THIS KID IS THE DEVIL BUT NOT REALLY CAUSE HE'S A PIG FATTY FAT FAT FAT!
