The moon is so bright tonight.

Feet bare, dangling over the dusty ground. Hot, humid air poured out of the faintly bubbling hot springs. Dango and mochi, accompanied by a sweet alcohol left in the offering box. Cicadas chirping their song, fairies dancing between the trees. Nothing to do but relax.

A night like this, one could float right away into dreams. Rise into the sky and touch the moon. The faraway eye that watched the mortal world. A marvellous pure land. She toasted that moon, and waited.

A ruined shrine, deep in the mountain forests. Past scorched earth and overgrown timbers. The old festival ground.

Nothing to say, but certainly there was something to do. He wandered up to the offering box, slats all rotted away, and left behind the bottle. It was a promise from so long ago, and he had forgotten for so many years. But it was fine if he started now. Perhaps. It didn't really matter, at any rate.

Wandering around now, ignoring most everything but the nostalgia and old memories, he tripped over a large rock. The rock extended its head, turned to face him, and now it was quite obviously a tortoise. They stared at each other for quite some time, until the tortoise blinked once, and languidly pulled its head back into the shell.

The man, for his part, threw his head back and laughed away like a small child. Until his lungs burned, and his eyes streamed with tears. Caught his breath and wiped his eyes, and started off on the path home. Some things were the same as always.
