My dad has this weird habit of persistently pronouncing certain foreign words incorrectly no matter how many times he's heard them. Like he says focaccia "focaseea." The guy's more educated than I'll ever be, and his English isn't "broken" in the least. I just don't get it.

Italian CE and CI = English CHE and CHEE, like in cheddar cheese.

The way Americans pronounce Italian words is pretty inconsistent vis-a-vis actual Italian but we do generally get that bit right. The weird thing is that Dad says it differently from everyone else here.

It blows my mind to realize that "Since You've Been Gone" and "Gates of Babylon" were technically by the same band.

Edit: Okay, further research reveals that "Since You've Been Gone" was actually written by another musician, but the version in my collection is a cover by Rainbow so it... sorta counts?

Tomorrow (more like today right now), I will be hitching three flights: one from Shanghai to Beijing (don't effing ask why I didn't take off from Pudong, my travel agent got pissed when I asked), then Beijing to Amsterdam and then from Amsterdam to Bogota.

The man with an ego so big he got kicked out of The Scorpions (whom he founded with his brother and Klaus Meine) twice and UFO thrice, so he started his own band named...wait for it... Michael Schenker Group. (You may know them as MSG, for short).

Well, the full story is a bit more complicated than that, but he's a) an amazing guitarist and b) one of the biggest egos the metal scene ever saw.

The results of my study are in.

I had noticed that Old Spice High Endurance seemed to be more effective than Speed Stick (non-antiperspirant). Specifically, I was applying Speed Stick in up to seven down-and-up motions under each arm and I would still notice odor by the end of the day, while with Old Spice I would apply only four or five down-and-up motions and noticed little or no odor. This suggested to me that Old Spice was a better buy even if the price was half again higher because each stick should last approximately 1.56 to 1.75 times as long.

To test this idea, I wrote the date that I opened a 3-ounce Speed Stick on the cap and used it in the accustomed fashion, then when it ran out, did the same with a 3-ounce Old Spice.

Surprisingly, the Speed Stick lasted 37 days, while the Old Spice lasted 42. This is a ratio of barely 1 to 1.14.

I can think of only one explanation, which is that more Old Spice is applied per motion. This phenomenon is possibly due to Old Spice having a softer consistency.

That being said, I still found the Old Spice more effective, which goes some way toward justifying its higher price.

On a personal level, I dislike "slam-bam-spank you, ma'am" porn because it does nothing for me. You know the type: delivery man arrives, there's no tip for him, he'll give the lady a tip, bow-chicka-wow-wow. I used to think those only existed as parodies, until I started working as a subtitler years ago and found out yep, they're real, and they exist in great quantity.

On a sociological level, I'm actually of the opinion that some amount of porn is healthy for a person's sex life, whether they're single or not. My criticism would be less toward porn per se and more toward specific points, such as the industry's exploitation of its actors, or the rape industry which exists either around or as a part of it (such as underage porn).

The amazing thing IMO is that there's actually a market for subbing such almost totally plotless porn. Like, are there really people out there who can only get off to the pizzaman screwing a hot girl if they can understand what he's saying? I imagine what passes for dialogue in such films is pretty easily discernable from context...

I understand your point. I believe that plotless porn still exist because most people see porn in general as simple fap fodder that don't need anything more than the act itself. That's why I dislike most 3d (real world) porn, except when I want a simple quick fap. The 2d (hentai, especially doujins) are way superior in many ways, as they often have things that the real world would never have, in a way that is so much better than real world's acting (like this, for example - NSFW obviously (https://nhentai.net/g/192192/))
Also, I'm glad to know that not everyone in this annoying society is a damn extremist

SpoonyViking
September 15th, 2019, 11:29 AM
Eh... To be honest, that one still seems pretty dry to me. It's not so much a matter of plot, I'd say - plenty of "fap fodder porn" does have plot, even if it's not good -, but of sensuality, eroticism, and - of course - building anticipation before delivering. I've seen very few movies which did that, most of them, for some reason, French.

Sometimes the quality of the video was so low I couldn't understand what the "characters" were saying, and obviously those movies didn't come with scripts for me to check, so I had to improvise something for the sub.
But yeah, those movies actually tend to have a lot of dialogue, even if it's boring and repetitive. You're forgetting that dirty talk can be quite stimulating when done well.

You're surprised that the French know how to capture sensuality? They are, after all, rather famed for it.
Although on the subject of European porn, old Italian films are some of the best examples of sensuality done right (sometimes actually blurring the line between porn with plot and plot with porn) and German/Dutch porn is highly fetishized, for some reason. Very clinical, too.

As for my opinion on porn in general? Nothing wrong with it, as long as the industry is kept clean.

Germanic cultures often separate sex and love from each other. Romance cultures like to keep them together. As someone who comes from one, I can safely say I actually hate this. I like my porn rather loveless, since I think romance should be pure and virginal and whatnot.

When's the last time you woke and you actually felt refreshed and well rested?

In 2012... when the world still made some sense. Then the new 10's said "hello" and everything good went dead at the drop of a hat.

Like nice people, for example. "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything!" was in the Internet Constitution prior to 2013. Then someone scrapped it around Jun 2012 and it all went down from there.

There must be something weird now that wasn't around back then, because at the time, I was always two steps ahead of everyone and their mother... down to the point I literally quit a credit card only to end up being called by a company offering me a far better one and was pretty much able to get preferential treatment at airports because... because.

Now? It's always someone having problems of some sort and when it's not the case, it's me having problems.

Then again, as a "light" control freak who had essentially controlled everything to the point of complacency, I can see why you wouldn't understand my viewpoint at all.

"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything!"

I see nothing wrong with that unless someone is getting hurt or doing something bad. I don't recall having discussions for three years straight when that was the norm and when we did, they often ended with an agreement to disagree, not pages upon pages of endless back and forths until someone grew tired of the dogpiling and bowed out.

That's literally a saying where I'm from! It's in freaking Bambi! So why is this bad in your eyes? Because freedom of expression means "I can" not "I should".

I am not the one who lets the vitriol out first, so I have no clue why you take issue with the advice. Unless you're trolling.

Like, your response doesn't seem to be following the advice (good faith).

You're Brazilian. You guys are pretty much the only known exception to everything I just said... You and Colombians (and I'd know because I'm CURRENTLY here!)

Europe though? Don't argue against the Barcelonan.

Look, even if we set aside how your premise isn't well-founded, to put it mildly, you're still disregarding close to a millenium, at least, of German and English works about love, eroticism, and everything in between (there's a reason why "Victorian bodice-ripper" entered the vernacular, for instance), and also the decades of Belgian and Italian underground erotica which went on at least until the 90's, and for all I know is still ongoing, all for starters. Or do you think Milo Manara's work, just to stick to probably the most well-known of those artists, cares about love and tenderness?

Now, I'll admit I don't know much about modern Spain specifically; my understanding is that Franco's dictatorship (and Salazar's over at Portugal) actually suppressed a lot of erotic art. That said, despite what some racist trash may argue, Brazilian sensuality did not come only from the African slaves or the Native Brazilians, and I seriously doubt the Argentinean tango, for instance, had absolutely no influence from Europe.

Seriously, go see more of the world, either personally or through cultural works. Except for asexuals and aromantics, love and sex are closer siblings than death and sleep.

I mean, I'm not being terribly serious with that claim. I'm referring to the recent mainstream stuff: in Nordic and many Germanic countries, love is separate from sex. You can sleep around and not need to be romantic, just nice looking or nice to be with. OTOH, in Southern Europe, while you can shag without romance, more often than not it's assumed you want at least a short term relationship with a woman.

I ain't talking about how they've developed, just the recent developments. You can see it by their disposition: over here, while Franco did suppress erotic art, it flourished once the guy was dead. As late as 2008, outside of Ibiza and Benidorm, picking up a girl just to shag was considered weird unless it was a whore (the expression "irse de putas" originated from this).

For one, I am also no stranger to our aromantic crap, or do you think Torbe is into romance?

Also, I'm no stranger to bodice rippers (and have been trying to write something that would gender-invert it), but they are different products: bodice rippers were the result of the sexual repression of the British and to a lesser extent early America. Romantic erotica thrived in Southern Europe and romance countries instead, the reason being the latter required openness and the former was a result of the lack of it. There's a very good reason why the Don Juan, Latin Lover and Galanterie are concepts associated with Iberia, Latam and France and few equivalents exist in Germanic countries besides the Tarzan-like archetype and... Fabio.

TL;DR I'm talking about primacy of each type, not that friends with benefits don't exist in Southern Europe... or for that matter, that the English and Germans can't into erotica.

As for tango, it originated from Flamenco, which was very sensual and in fact endorsed by el caudillo when he lived, alongside bulls and essentially anything Andalusian, since he had the distinct impression that Andalusian = Spanish. Brazil also inherited some of Portugal's sensual luggage as well as some of Italy's... but there was never the fusion of these as expected: you guys do have, if I recall correctly, your own erotica cinema scene (or had, can't remember), but it diverges so significantly from the Samba/Carnival influence (and I think geographically too. Brazil is essentially divided between the far South and the Center-North) that it almost certainly emerged on its own and only cherry picked from what aspects it liked.

And I couldn't see more of the world if I tried, unless you really don't want me to sleep for more than five hours ever again.

I, uh, don't think "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything!" has ever been part of the internet code. There's been more open conflict from 2014-ish onwards, sure, but that's just a result of more types of people (and more people, period) using the internet.

I'd argue you're still being over-generalising and basing yourself at best on second-hand accounts, at worst on national stereotypes.

The later essentially. I mean, since when is human nature that simplistic?

I'm talking "what they are known for"... like which country has the best erotic cinema, not accounting for personal taste. The answer is going to be one, not "all of them".

It's taken on a life of its own after that. It's called the "Macho Iberico" now.
