A thread to mention and talk about any cool independent games you have played. Because there is no talk about the western side of things here. Japanese indie games are fine too.

Obligatory Cave Story mention
La-Mulana
Noitu Love 2 (really all of his games)
Aquaria
World of Goo
Snakes of Avalon
Cream Wolf (and all those other games he made I can't remember right now)
Braid
X days a Sauerkraut series and the Art of Theft spin-off

Yes I am probably forgetting a lot but that is the point of the thread.
Now go my fellow denizens and find me lots of free distractions so I don't have to work.

Cave Story is outstanding, and even that is an understatement. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys platformers, perhaps even video games in general.

Super Meat Boy is worth a mention as well, though I would not necessarily suggest it for the everygamer, considering its difficulty may send some raging. I personally love it, however.

Some others:

Castle Crashers
Lucidity
Toy Soldiers (Xbox Live)
The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

Tale of Tales games such as The Path (PC) I might suggest too. Though it depends on your interests.

Super Meat Boy is great, as is Flotilla. And what Indie thread would this be without Eversion?

How about Ranger? Looks simple, but its gameplay is nice and the music is kick-ass.

The Humble Indie Bundle is great stuff. Frozenbyte Bundle has good games in it (unfortunately I already own them all), and you can pay whatever you want.

That's the third one. #2 was even better, plus they threw in #1's games later on. Support starving developers!

Wow I was thinking about making an Indie game thread last night. haha but anyone else ever play an Untitled Story?

Man are they doing this again? I want to say I spend more money on this than other games but it is so cheap. If I spend about 10 more dollars that will put me at 30ish.

I grabbed Eversion and Ranger, as I've been looking for something to occupy my time.

Eversion, from the sounds of it, should be...interesting. Anything that uses a quote from H.P. Lovecraft as inspiration is guaranteed to be awesome(and likely very disturbing).

Ranger looks rather fun, kinda like S.A.S. Zombie Assault.

Audiosurf and Defcon deserve mentions, particularly Defcon.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

It's not finished yet (hell, doesn't even have a demo out), but it looks pretty amazing, apparently is flying under the radar, and I just thought I'd share it all with you.

Card Sagas Wars is basically a crossover fighting game with characters from all sorts of games and anime. From the looks of it, it's kind of like MvC meets SSM Brawl.

My suggestion would be the Streets of Rage Remake with hundreds of levels and enemies. Can't legally link it because Sega C&D'd the devs a day after they released it, but it's easy enough to find. It's just... a serious labor of love for old arcade beat 'em ups.

Holy shit. I shouldn't be surprised because it's MUGEN, but that looks like it's shaping up to be a really high quality release.

I experimented with trying to make MUGEN characters a few years ago, but in the end I settled for downloading absurdly overpowered fighters and pitting them against each other for the lulz (LMAO French Brolly) :P

Looks promising, downloaded. I'll check it out when my finals are over (I've probably said this for 50 things now that probably won't happen...)

I'd have to recommend Cortex Command (http://www.datarealms.com/games.php). The game itself is already incredibly innovative in many ways, but the incredible mod community kicks it for me. It's $18 for the pre-release version like many indie games, but I grabbed it as part of the "pay whatever you want" Humble Bundle #2 some months back.

This should tell you whether you think you'll like the vanilla game or not:

Actually I brought it up because the same makers have a new game. They call it the spiritual successor to Digital. Its called Don't Take It Personally Babe, It Just Ain't Your Story (http://www.scoutshonour.com/donttakeitpersonallybabeitjustaintyourstory/). I have it downloaded but haven't played it yet. Was wondering if anyone else knew anything more about it.

@DTIPB,IJAYS:

It was pretty meh to me, felt like too much soapboxing. I have absolutely no idea why they would consider it a spiritual successor to Digital. It doesn't really carry any of the same themes, style or gameplay, and didn't really feature any of the same elements unless you count that everyone uses computers a lot. Although Digital was more about the advent of the Internet, and this one's about more present day usage of it.

I didn't go through all the options of it, and only did one ending because it bored me too much to go through it again, but again, meh.

Huh okay then. That's a shame. I was wondering how it would carry on Digital's spirit. Its still on my to-play list though.

I played about half of this the other day, then gave up and just spoiled myself for the ending. I didn't like any of the characters (Kendall = ALL MY HATE), so I just got fed up with reading about a bunch of boring teenagers' boring relationship problems on Facebook. I don't even use Facebook anymore, man.

Well that sucks. Ah at least I know I'm not missing out on much by not playing it then. I'm most of the way through Cave Story now. I'm really impressed with it. Might try to go for that other ending some time. But for now... Its good.

Lemme ressurect this thread and leave this one link here: http://projectzomboid.com/blog/

Now, I know this is a few months old, so a lot of you may have seen and tried it out already, but I thought I would share it since I
thought the concept was interesting. And, of course, I have already played it a few times now and I have to say I enjoyed it, and
seeing how they are planning co-operative play in the future that will probably just get better and better...

You know what is a fun game? The Binding of Isaac, has good music too. Brought to you by Edward McMullen comes another cute and gruesome game in the style of a shooter (not FPS) dungeon crawl mix that provokes "this reminds me of the Legend of Zelda" without fail.

Been playing some Poacher by Yahtzee. Not perfect but it's getting fun none the less.

Protips: get used to the quirks of your shotgun. Attack enemies at long range when possible and compensate for reload.

Anyone play Journey from PSN? It's a very simple, short linear game (<1-2 hours gameplay if you just rush through it - but who rushes through games first time around?) but I found it to be very atmospheric much like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

ReverseLogic
April 7th, 2012, 01:33 AM
I haven't heard of it myself- what genre is it, puzzle, platformer, etc? Sounds potentially interesting, if it's atmospheric. :)

So many great games in this thread (I also need to finish Eversion- just one level more...)~

I suppose I'll throw out a rec while I'm here though: for anyone who wants a pretty decent free roguelike, there's the alpha version of Desktop Dungeons (http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=11). It's pretty addicting, but is great if you only have ten minutes to spare and want to have some fun. :) Plus it's customizable, which is always nice.

Also, does Recettear count as an indie game? Because it is awesome, and I recommend it to anyone. :3

Hmm...not sure how to categorize it. You can say it's somewhat of a platformer/puzzle but not quite. Gameplay is much diluted from say ICO or Shadow of the Colossus. All you are doing is following a path towards a final destination (running/jumping/flying) with a story free for interpretation. Game has no dialogue but beautiful scenery IMO even if its mostly desert haha. It's one of those games you'd play maybe once only and replay (if you're a perfectionist) to unlock all the trophies and a costume. Of course this is the kind of game that gamers either love or hate depending on personal taste with mine being more toward the artistic/poetic kind of games :o.

Don't Starve is Great on what it sets out to make, a Unique Single-Player Survival Experience.

Minecraft Meets Tim Burton Pencilmation is a simple way to describe this.
Its on sale for being still developed but its a great game. Especially the recent updates 11.99 and you get an Extra to share.

But just don't forget one important rule.

Don't Starve.
