I thought about posting here my tm fanart for a while, but only after I draw something new on the subject. Lately I won a questionable victory in fight with my laziness and finally managed it, so here they are.

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/317/2/d/welcome_home_by_awfulgood-d6u54mp.png

I used a tm wiki random page to pick a character for drawing, but after getting Gilgamesh in a bunch of successive rolls I refused the idea because his armor is a bitch to draw. Then I felt that I just want to make a Kohaku fanart and commenced drawing. Sadly, I possess an annoying attribute "The drawing draws itself", so from initial idea of having her dance in a cute way somewhere in the courtyard left pretty much nothing. After realizing that she is getting to look rather creepy I also changed background to the dark and edgy entrance.

And now some older stuff. You could have possibly already seen those if you are on deviantart. Here's my page (http://awfulgood.deviantart.com/) there, which also has some non-tm related plain shit and weird shit.

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/9/e/akiha_by_awfulgood-d5u62rh.png

This picture is inspired by one of my favorite Akiha sprites. I'm usually not good at imitating Takeuchi style, but I got the trademark neck here almost perfectly.

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/103/4/d/projection_by_awfulgood-d61eo8d.png

I believe this is one of my better pictures if not for Archer's face. I couldn't decide for a while whether should I make this face look more realistic or more Takeuchi and the result turned out weird. I also remember being very autistic about drawing Kanshou and Bakuya right, but in the end still screwed up something. Don't remember what exactly though.

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/245/3/2/sakura_by_awfulgood-d6ko498.png

More like a doodle then an actual drawing. Don't really know what to say about this one except that I got the trademark neck right again.

http://i.imgur.com/DE5pJen.jpg

I remember for whatever reason posting this one on pixiv instead of deviantart. I did it after the second to last episode of F/Z aired. I also have an uncolored follow-up strip, will get to color it and post it here later.

And now some unpublished, uh, works. I did these doodles while playing F/SN and never uploaded them anywhere before.

Thought I should actually draw Gilgamesh, but not sure whether draw him in the whole armor or half-armor. I'm leaning more to half-armor, but as remember it doesn't go with up-hair. So it would be whole armor, I can always delete the upper half if I don't like it. Never noticed before that his leg armor is a bit ZR-like

I should totally finish it, make that clean lineart, shiny coloring and other fancy things like on those cool anime drawings. Maybe I should also draw the whole legs, but the pic looks fine without them too.

Got an idea to draw this strip after reading a translated part of one of the Mahoyo chapters. Thought for a while what should I dress Touko in because I can't see her doing stuff in her lab while wearing those fabulous clothes. I dug out a prototype design for her with black hair and black uniform, quite a cute one. So you can say I stuffed her in the sort of blouse she'd wear under that uniform.

Ah, I believe I already finished the lineart for that Aoko pic, but to lazy to check if I really did. Anyway, it has to wait for a while because I have other stuff on the pipeline.

it's interesting how you have problems with human shape, but your <mise-en-scene> is so friggin' awesome.

Huitante
December 20th, 2013, 05:18 AM
Yeah, I totally need to practice more at drawing humans. And actually use references cause most of the time I'm too lazy to look for a proper reference.

What I'm also bothered about is how to make a proper pause in a comic/comic strip when there are no speech balloons involved or how to work on pacing in general. I have some ideas and read stuff about it, but it's different when it comes to the drawing itself. In my head I have that animated sequence of the scene I need to convey through the bunch of static panels, but the transition process is tough. What should be put in and what is better left out? How to make it flow properly? And I can't even evaluate the result without bias because I already have that animated sequence in my mind helping to reconstruct it from the panels. Vaguely related image (http://www.bigredhair.com/work/McCloud_Carl_storyB.jpg)

I like Arc's design so much. That white sweater looks comfy and has her signature color, nice long skirt with contrasting to it, but still but not too dark and rather warm and lively color, also the shape of it repeats the shape of her hair and it's good. The funnels on her hair give her cat-like image which is very cute. The only thing I don't quite like are twin ahoges, they give some bug-like feeling, but those are later addition. Of course her redesign shits on all those nice things, but whatever.

I somewhat messed up the skirt on this pic, also there is that one error I always make because of which pictures like this look less pretty than they could have been.

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/011/3/8/overlord_sketches_by_awfulgood-d71tf9v.jpg

So I wanted to draw a picture called "Overlord". I found an old drawing of knight by middle-school me and thought I'd draw something like that, but with more 'kono pressure'. Knight's armor was heavily, um, inspired by Sauron's. I should do more sketches, these are still wrong.

Ah well. Coloring is so easy to screw up when drawing traditionally, on paper. It brings a whole set of problems. Various editors make stuff easier. I got so accustomed to tablet and digital drawing that when draw on paper get quite discomforted with the absence of "Undo" button. Such a handy thing. Real life lacks it so much.

Coloring also uncovers errors in picture which were unnoticed before. Human sight works in bizarre way, letting brain reconstruct sizable chunk of what we see from copy-paste, replacing and other tricks. It's much worse when looking on a bunch of drawn lines on a screen or paper we attempt to see a certain object/figure. As drawing gets more complete, we realize how imperfect it is and much brain was making up and ignoring flaws to deceive us into believing it was better.

My grandparents' house had an entire row of raspberries growing along the side of their house. Most of my time there was spent either watching TV, playing on the beach, or eating raspberries.
The thing is, my grandparents also had it, but it was small and totally underwhelming comparing to glorious neighbor's garden. Sometimes our raspberry hunger simply couldn't be sated with a tiny handful of our own, and we raided neighbor's --'
Huh, it's nice to have beach nearby. In our grandparents' town we'd have to walk about 3 km for nearest pond with moderately covered in cow excrement beach, so for us it was mostly TV, various household stuff and playing with friends.

Yeah SAI is what I use the most. It's the best for simple drawing. Every editor with pressure sensitivity support will go. Gimp, Photoshop among the most popular. I also like Manga Studio for the fine stroke stabilizer, but as editor it's specialized for making comics and not very comfortable for random drawing.

Yeah, I use Manga Studio and it sucks for single drawings. You can't even color without creating a separate specialized layer for it.

Switching from traditional to digital drawing is not that easy yeah. Deviantart has crapload of tutorials for drawing techniques (here (http://snigom.deviantart.com/art/Basic-Pencil-Shading-42276998) and here (http://snigom.deviantart.com/art/Adanced-Shading-Techniques-43158629) for shading as example) to recall and learn

To be fair, making separate layer (or more likely multiple layers) for coloring is a common thing, but indeed creating a normal non-monochrome layer for coloring in Manga Studio is not a one-click task like in most editors.

It's mouse drawn. I can't prove that it's mouse drawn because this is the internet, but it's mouse drawn. The only reason that the strokes are tapered is because SAI has its lovely little linework layer with a pressure tool.

But lasso drawing is great. Instead of precise brushstrokes, I just draw loop after loop of color and then blur it into oblivion.

That curry is a good approximation of Takeuchi's curry.

The pleats on the skirt are a bit wonky, and the lines around the fingers are a bit messy. The sweater also appears to cut into her back. Her arms also seem too close to her body, but that may just be because of the slightly distorted perspective.

This does shine in the expression though. It's very gentle and soft.

To be fair, I believe she's holding it a bit strangely (the finger that's supposed to go through handle doesn't look to me like it's actually holding it, and her thumb looks like it's way too long).
But don't listen to me, I can talk all day but I can't do anything even close to drawing.

Huitante

You're right, those fingers need fixing.

Since I don't feel like redrawing the whole arms, hopefully putting a random Japanese rune on the cup would compensate for the factual error of it being Western.

Try experimenting with line weights and slightly thicker outlines around the silhouettes of characters. They help things pop out like Shirou! I think thicker outlining like that would've helped Ciel pop out a bit more in your Ciel art.

Of course I feel proud that they took into consideration my earlier crappy fanart with Kotomine and Rin walking in circles around Shirou in the church and agreed to add such a magnificent F/Z reference into show, but I'd rather have them do right something that actually matters.

Those were quite a challenge. I did and erased them several times in row till I got to somewhat acceptable result. What I really dislike about the picture is the tree on the left. Huitante
March 5th, 2015, 10:07 PM
When I've just started using SAI on one hand I was delighted how simple and easy to operate it was, but on the other hand I felt it was lacking some features I often needed during my drawing sprees. Among latter were gradient tool, advanced filtering and proportional scale. While it took me relatively small time to forget about first two things, I only lately grew to appreciate the true artistic advantage of absence of proportional scale.

Initially your post caused a thought like "wow my water tool skills are so great they make stuff look like drawn with gradient tool", but then I realized that instead of wasting about 15 or even 20 minutes to painting and then smearing the damn thing I could have simply opened gimp and used the gradient tool.

Phearo
March 8th, 2015, 08:14 AM
You can save it as a .psd on SAI and open it up on gimp. I don't think cross-developing is that much of a problem. Still, this does remind me that I need to shape up my painting skills.

Huitante
March 11th, 2015, 05:53 PM
Yeah, that's the way I did it before.

Had been traveling, finally came back and checked out Krita. My smile and optimism: gone. The damn thing crashed every time I tried to create a new picture. Bonus points for being so slow I couldn't properly lay a stroke. x86 version, despite blurting out message "blah blah something not recommended blah blah download x64 blah" actually managed to create me a new picture. But otherwise was as slow as x64 one.

I believe that some of these issues are to blame on my old and creaky hardware which can't hold all this new resource-hungry stuff. So I'm staying with SAI which is lightweight enough to work with big enough pictures on my old shit-
