View Full Version : Ross' Fanart Dump Thread

Well, I thought I'd make a thread here since my weird drawings aren't enough to surge life into the appropriate fanclubs. Unfortunately, I got into Type-Moon through Melty Blood mostly first. So I have a certain fondness for Tsukihime/Melty Blood.

Here's a UNIEL styled Riesbyfe Stridberg:

I know it's not exactly mine, but I get giddy whenever someone titles their thread "art dump" or any mutation of the phrase. hooray for childishness

As for the artworks, I'd say keep at it. Some parts don't look right, and the lineart could be improved, but the bigger picture is pretty clear, and the scene its showing is fairly coherent and whole, to say the least.

Well the chains were mostly placeholders, hence why some of them are just lazily shaped blobs, but everything else seems to be pretty close to what others have told me. I'll probably redo Arc's proportions a bit, I may have gotten carried away there. I'll probably completely redraw shiki ryougi to add more dynamics to her pose. I tried finding references but ended up basically using the low res melty blood sprites from melty blood, which in hindsight was probably not the best idea.

Also Shiki's hair is like my kryptonite, I can't seem to get a grasp on it

I'm alive still. Got caught into various tutorials and workflow videos to get a better idea on how to do digital painting, which was something I was a bit uncomfortable with.

While not Type-Moon related, I decided to put the Arc/Ryougi action scene on hold to get some more practice in before tackling it. So here's Luna from Dota 2:

Some of the proportions are a bit wonky but I feel like I'm improving. I'll give some Type Moon stuff another go now.

Yeah, I can sort of see the lazy eye. I tend to make eyes a little crosseyed to make them seem more focused in front of them and be well, cute. The problem is that it's in the delicate balancing of too crosseyed and not lazy eyed.

I'm going to do some more type moon art but it wouldn't hurt to show another dota fanart I did. Drow Ranger:

Thanks, while of course I really enjoy anime art styles, I never really want to go fully down that route of moeblob. I did takes notes from my favorite (only?) Riesbyfe artist Ryuck's art for the roast beef picture but I still kept a few of my own style choices intact.

Did a Sion/Eltnum. Not really happy how this turned out mainly because halfway through coloring it my tablet stopped having pressure sensitivity and I didn't realize it, but atleast it was more lineart practice in Paint Tool SAI. I really want to be able to do really good rimlights, but I'm probably going to study up on that before applying it.

I actually kind of feel the same way about the Ciel redesign. It's not very unique and it's weird after being used to Ciel's original hair style. That being said, I'm a sucker for heavy bangs in designs. I also think that there seems to be only one picture of the Redesign Ciel so maybe seeing it in a different style makes it a bit more welcoming.

all of your rough sketches look nicer than things i've spent hours on

Thanks! You should definitely continue spending hours on practicing if you want to get better at drawing. I emphasize the practice part, because sometimes we kind of just want to try and draw something cool and amazing but you really need to dive into drawing shapes, forms and fundamentals. (i.e the kind of boring part)

ADVICE CORNER!!

I looked through your thread and you did have a messy start but I can see some improvement! Especially with your shiki ryougi avatar pic, which I really like. One of the main things you should really consider, especially when it comes to people, is to try and learn realistic anatomy proportions and scaling. Whoa whoa! I know that sounds rough and difficult, but when I say try that I'm not expecting you to draw a heavily realistic portrait of a person. What I want you to try and grasp is the basic general rules and foundations of what constitutes a "realistically proportioned" human head. Here's a rough idea of what I mean along with some certain rules/guides I tend to follow as a amateur artist:

http://i.imgur.com/QCAM7T2.png

The head is an egg shape, think of it like a circle connecting to the jaw/jawline. Focus on the purple here:
http://i.imgur.com/sjTn7er.png
Eyes are almost 90% of the time in the center of the head. They should never be too high or too low of the center of the main head.
In the same way, ears are also 90% of the time in the center of the head, nestled in near the same height of the eyes.
Even though the shape of the head ends, keep in mind that hair is a fluffy mass that will build over the head. Focus on the red in the above pics.
Mouth width can be measured pretty well using the pupils as guidelines. The width can start and end the same length of the length between two pupils.
There's quite a bit of space inbetween the eyes and the nose, be careful not to have this space be too much or else you'll end up with the dreaded longface. The space between the nose and mouth is usually roughly half the space between the eyes and nose.
When thinking about lips, remember that in mose lighting situations the upper lip will always be darker than the bottom lip.

What's the point of all this really? Well, if there's one major pitfall most fan artists in anime communities fall into is focusing too much on the anime style and not necessarily on the foundations of proper proportions and scaling. So an artist will focus too hard on making big kawaii eyes but won't scale everything else in the face to properly fit those big eyes.

But wait, anime tend to not have proportional features, like big eyes and small noses and mouths! Why would I need to focus on realistic proportions? Because anime art styles, or any art style really, consist of the artists manipulating the foundation of realistic proportions to create something new. They're scaling proportions of features but keeping them synced still. That's why you can look at a really good anime drawing and not be disgusted by the out of scale proportioned features in the face. When you understand the basic fundamentals of realistic proportions in the face you can manipulate it into an anime style or your own style! SUCH POWER! I do a horrible job of explaining it, here's someone who can do it better!

Western style is your preference, Ross?

Mostly? I guess? The style I've developed is certainly more focused on western traits but I feel like I incorporate a small bit of anime influence.

http://i.imgur.com/mlwTcpO.png

What I was trying to express is that, for example I don't really draw anime moe girls but because I have a pretty good understanding of faces so I can look at the moe style and draw it without butchering it too much. If you have basic fundamentals you can basically look at any art style and get a good grasp of how specific things are skewered or warped. The fun part is then taking pieces from different styles or influences you like and creating your own take on things. This applies to anime as well, K-ON's art style for example isn't exactly Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. There are also anime styles that incorporate western influence as well, such as Cowboy Bebop's entire atmosphere and Attack on Titan's use of heavy thick lines.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely use that.. once I start drawing stuff again.

And the outline of my avatar was traced from someone else's picture, that's why the proportions aren't horribly butchered.

I had this trouble too. I've been really into watching a bunch of tutorials from an artist I like. If you have the $10 to spend, I recommend Sakimichan's Blending tutorial, it helped me a ton: https://gum.co/xQguR

If not, some basic tips:

- Use a square or flat brush first to sort of outline the hard shadows. I like the flat brush that's like this:
http://i.imgur.com/f8yg6DP.png

-Once you have the basic hard shadows, use a soft airbrush to apply softer shading. Use the eyedropper tool (It's great to have it shortcut'd onto one of the tablet pen's buttons) to pick colors quickly and blend easier. So let's say you have a certain color then the shaded version of that color (which should have more saturation by the way, not just be "darker". Shadows naturally have more saturation to them. The inverse is true also, brighter shades have less saturation in them, unless it's metal or something.) Get one color and lightly brush it towards the other color. Eyedropper tool the other color and brush towards the first color. Then eyedropper tool the inbetween colors and lightly brush it in and repeat so forth until it appears smoothly blended in.
http://i.imgur.com/PAfAuVi.png

Also you can use subtle dodge/burn-ing to add more depth without making what you've painted messier.

That's the basic idea but it's something you really have to sort of practice or watch someone else do to get a better idea on how to do it. I'm sure there's other blending tutorials on youtube. I recommend just trying to paint really simple geometric shapes like spheres or cubes and the such so you can get a better idea on how to do blending, then apply it to your sketches.

do you just use the one airbrush for the hair? because your hair is amazing and i can't get anything to look slightly like that

I'm still trying to get better at rendering hair but the basic idea is that itt's made up of setting the base silihouette flat colors you start with to be sort of a midtone shade, and then brushing large thick brushes over it, having them get thinner and brighter as you go on. Then you use an airbrush to sort of blend them in so they aren't just flat strokes. It's hard to explain, but there's plenty of great tutorials on the subject, such as this:

Nah, the shading is mainly to see how I kind of want to light the sketch and test values, it's more of concept. I paint over it either way.

I usually find that a drawing that looks okay to me on paper will look skewed and out-of-proportion after I scan and flip it. Doing most of the work digitally gives a great advantage in that regard.

would you ever flip it upside down?

Sometimes, yes. But that's usually for people who really, really want to seperate their mind from the image, and really focus and concentrate on drawing what they actually see and not what their mind sees.

I usually just use the (R) Rotate Tool. Really, really useful. It completely mimics the way I spazz around while drawing stuff on paper.

Yeah.. wish I had one. In the occasions where I'd need to have a extremely active(and new) pose for a character it just ends up with me taking pictures of myself doing weird poses for reference. It was very awkward.

It's like Yui doesn't quite know what she's doing there. Nice picture, anyway; what kind of brushes are you using to get that hair effect?

RossC90
July 26th, 2015, 02:23 PM
That's interesting you ask that because I'm actually not that satisfied with how the hair came out, I need to practice rendering hair a bit more. But for that type of hair I start with a dark, dull tone of whatever hair color it is and slowly start adding brighter strands on top of it using one of the default simple photoshop brushes. I then use darker colors to sort of shape out the hair and then use a hair brush to paint on and smudge out strands of hair. I then add a shine with a large soft brush then do light dodging.

For the hair brush I usually make my own or find something that is a lot of spaced out specks and adjust the Spacing to all the way to 1% so give a strand effect:

Some "Critical Role" Fanart Sketches. Critical Role is a pretty awesome D&D stream hosted by voice actor Matthew Mercer and a couple of his Voice Actor and Voice Actress friends. Tons of fun to watch, they stream every Thursday. This sketch features Kashaw, a grumpy tsundere human cleric and Keyleth a completely opposite half elf druid.

I don't know if this counts as "Fanart" but I finally released something I've been holding onto for a long time. If you're a Left 4 Dead 2 fan, check it out:

http://i.imgur.com/jLr6nQT.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/V2amRNW.png
http://i.imgur.com/bVruYP0.png

It's a Left 4 Dead 2 campaign based on a somewhat accurate recreation of a portion of my high school, though of course filtered through a horror movie aesthetic. I kept it in a rough shape and would occasionally play it with friends. Last week though a friend had a sudden urge to play Left 4 Dead 2 again and it sparked an interest from my whole group. Because of that, I decided to finally go back to the old map and finish it up. It's now completely playable and can be finished. It's one map, but supports COOP, VERSUS, SURVIVAL, and SCAVENGE game modes! I'm actively updating it for awhile taking suggestions so if you have Left 4 Dead 2 installed you can check it out here:

Little change of pace, but for my New Year's Resolution I decided to try and get back into 3D modeling and made a goal to finish an entire dota 2 set and publish it into the steam workshop to (hopefully and wishful thinking) get into the game. I took a break from modeling 2 years ago to get better at digital painting since my textures were lacking. 2 Years have passed and I think I've improved quite a bit, so it's back into the fray! Resuscribing to Digital-Tutors and watching 5 hours of tutorials have gotten me here so far:

I'm working on an Omniknight Set, and rather than try to work on something complicated like hair for a head item, like I usually would do which would cause me to lose focus, I decided to go the simpler and more fun route of starting with the main weapon first, then base the entire set aesthetic on the weapon:

http://i.imgur.com/xC4ED6L.png

This is the main concept I did a painting of, after choosing from a bunch of different rough silhouette concepts.

Here's the current pre-Zbrush block out of the hammer:

Any particular reason why the handle is so detailed compared to the sketch? Shading/texture "baking" for the lower detailed/in-game models?

Exactly that. But also just alteration of the concept during the blockout process too. I realized that it would be better to have thicker/more red cloth wrapping on the handle to contrast the golden color of the head of the hammer. Another change to concept was the end of the handle, I figured I could only do 2 cylinders and save the polygon budget for the lower poly model. But like you said, having those thicker individual forms over the handle makes it easier to bake those details later on instead of trying to sculpt the wrapping over the handle in Zbrush.

Thanks but I can't comfortably Zbrush yet! That model was made in 3DS Max. I'm currently learning Zbrush though so we'll see where that gets me!

Pretty much done with the hammer, but I'm a little unsure about the original color scheme.

A was the original color scheme I went with based mainly on his cape but it seems a little too red and yellow for him, or maybe it doesn't? Which of these looks the best or any suggestions?

C works best for him, IMO.

Pokemon Sun/Moon comes out tomorrow! So here's a quick speed-paint of honestly the best starter, am I right?

Also, I made a time lapse of the Saber fanart I did earlier so you can see me not know exactly what I'm doing in super fast motion. I did some touch ups so here's the final version:

I'm Open for Commissions!!

I lean generally towards fantasy and fanart, but Iím really interested on creating wonderful interpretations of original characters. Especially tabletop characters!

- All pricing is USD and done through Paypal. The prices are base rates and my vary based on complexity, such as how much of the character is visible and the presence of a background. For example, a simple bust with flat colors would be more affordable than a full body, fully rendered painting with a background. Email or message me to inquire about what you want and I can offer a more accurate price.

Sketch : $10
A simple and (probably messy) sketch. If youíre just sort of curious and want a quick commission that could potentially be worked on with more refined lineart and colors, this is the best way to go.

Lineart: $20
A fully cleaned and polished high resolution line art piece. Iíll send you a quick concept sketch before doing the lineart process. I generally a place a place a monochromatic shade or color underneath the lineart. Can include some minor shading.

Flat Colors: $25
Lineart done with a quick flat color pass. The amount of colors in the characterís palette will affect the price.

Full Color: $30
This is the Flat Color pass with full polish over it, making note of material shading, rim lighting, etc.

Digital Painting: $40
This is a full rendered digital painting that is done with no lineart and leans heavily towards being fully rendered.
