Through age of future’s past
With strangest of ways
A truth revealed to the last
Who uncovers those days

Your choice you cannot outrun
Lies and truth are this tale
In the end there was just one
Who found the Mocking Grail

In the end there was just one

—And then there were none

12th of January, 2010
Near Hokkaido, off the coast of Japan

The cold, unforgiving island of Tengetsu. A city wrapped in mysteries tighter than the blanket of snow it is wearing. The annual "Great Blizzard" is approaching; a huge snow storm that cuts off the island from the rest of the world for weeks. Locals are not the only ones who are there to enjoy this odd local phenomena, but tourists, too, have gathered in droves to witness the spectacle. The small town once under the occupation of Nazi Germany is now a prosperous, shining beacon of light for the rest of Japan. Though the dark days of the past still occasionally cast their shadows, and though sinister mysteries raise their heads every now and then, everything seems to be peaceful this winter...

... until the beginning of the Second Heaven's Moon.

A great ritual meant to bring forth the Mocking Grail, an omnipotent vessel that is said to grant miracles to those who obtain it. And to obtain it, one must fight in a war. War that is fought between nine people, nine Masters. Nine Masters and nine Servants.

Masters - People from around the world with supernatural talents.

Servants - Heroic Spirits summoned to the modern age to enter a bloody melee to death.

You are one of these nine, either a Servant or a Master. You've been invited by the call of a mysterious letter, and three red brands appearing on you. Someone, or something, on this freezing cold island requests your presence... and you have decided to answer. Perhaps to find the truth. Perhaps to know why. Perhaps to simply win. Perhaps to have your wish granted. Perhaps to enjoy the deaths of others.

Your reasons are your own.

The only thing expected of you...

... is to win.

Fate/Moon White Redux is a forum roleplay that serves as a re-telling of the original Fate/Moon White that was never finished. With slight tweaks made to the system and with a brand new rulebook, the Holy Grail War of Tengetsu is taken to new heights. This is no high school island floating in the sky. This is a cold and dark place, where vicious mysteries try to obstruct you from proceeding. This is a place where you must either fight or die, as alliances are unlikely. In other words, this is the true essence of a Holy Grail War condensed. There are no Gamemaster-determined enemies to fight. The only enemies you must defeat to win are other players. Fair or unfair, clean or dirty, honorable or dastardly... how you decide to tackle this war is up to you. Even whether you are a Servant or a Master is up to you.

But remember: there can be only one winner.

Everything you need to get started can be found in the rulebook. The rulebook, on the other hand, can be found here. (http://www.mediafire.com/download/o9081pucmkkfc2a/FMWRRulebook.docx)

And here is a link to a .doc version. (http://www.mediafire.com/download/qcj74258kg84o9x/FMWRRulebook.doc)

There are some rules that should be good to know before entering this game. Here is the current list, which may grow if players are determined to... fool around.

Incidentally, there are some ground rules that are in effect for all and every player. Call it "learning from old mistakes."

No Simo Häyhä as a Servant
No Lesbian Joan of Arc
No loli Joan of Arc
NO LESBIAN LOLI JOAN OF ARC
No Insta-Summoning the moment you get out of plane
Powerplayers are mercilessly cut down
Minmaxers are mercilessly cut down
Loophole exploiters are mercilessly cut down
Rulebook is subject to change if some things are not found working. It is a big thing, and there's always something to tweak.
There is no direct choosing method of players. After all, there are 18 spots to claim, so that should be enough.
That being said, if there is competition, the most interesting character/concept will win. Not the strongest or the coolest.

More might be added if the need be.

Hear me in the name of my great teacher, [______].
Let the descending winds be as a wall.

Kichiro Aohara
The resident class-clown of 2-B. A young man who dreams big, but lives surprisingly small. His family owns a ramen restaurant in the old town.

http://i.imgur.com/CCbsHxu.png
Keiko Fukui
The homeroom teacher of class 2-B. A little distant and rather serious woman, she puts academic success above everything else. Old friends with Tetora Fujimura.

http://i.imgur.com/gArxKeS.png
Munechika Hakushima
The third oldest sibling out of the four who guard the current mayor. Munechika is soft-spoken and solemn individual who believes his boss is the only hope the island of Tengetsu has. Like the rest of his siblings, he is experienced in both weapons and supernatural means of fighting.

http://i.imgur.com/4FviYpC.png
Mika
One of the prostitutes living in Shushin Koushi. Known to be quite the drinker. Hears perhaps more secrets than anyone else in town.

Annabelle McKlennington
One of the two current heads of the Vollmond Theater. A sweet and caring individual, and an accomplished magus on her own right.

http://i.imgur.com/Lew0Erw.jpg
Sensei
Jiboujiki Clinic’s acting doctor. “Sensei” is, of course, not his real name, but that’s the only name he’s ever given to anyone. His methods may be weird, but no one can deny his skills. Hates people.

http://i.imgur.com/CXIb2Cr.jpg
Yuina Yukimura
An aloof woman who owns the Gongujoudo hot springs inn. Some say she’s the weirdest person on the island, and anyone who meets him can agree. Still, she runs a fine establishment.

http://i.imgur.com/yWF5RrU.png
Yamaichi no Izumi
The blind young girl who acts as the assistant of priestess Sourokurou. Quiet and demure, she seems mostly concerned by the well-being of the Masters. Though she does not talk much, she gets what she means across well-enough. Is in love with various old puzzle-games, and may often offer mysterious hints to Masters visiting the shrine.

http://i.imgur.com/C0ki9Ju.jpg
Rain Fereshgical
South African Executor who has become something of a sensation on the island. His cheerful attitude and contagious grin have made him a liked figure, and because of that, he has the most contact with the locals out of all the Church members on Tengetsu. Still, despite his happy-go-lucky mindset, he should not be taken lightly. He is accomplished fighter and a pious believer.

http://i.imgur.com/Mnhr4zS.jpg
Kairi Kato
A normal high schooler living in Tengetsu City. Still, rumors say that this hot-headed young girl has seem some strange things happening at night in her neighborhood…

Matthias Loch
One of the two current heads of the Vollmond Theater. Young man with a fervent passion towards acting.

Otsue taiyu
The current owner of Shushin Koushi. A woman who holds surprising amount of power in the city, and uses it to protect her “daughters.”

http://i.imgur.com/IE1vcvd.jpg
Sayokuni Hakushima
The youngest sibling out of the master swordsmen who defend the mayor of Tengetsu whenever someone threatens his life. Sayokuni, while not as talented as the other three, makes it up with the density of the inhumane blood running within. Still, Sayokuni does not shy away from a sword-battle. This youngest member of the Hakushima lineage might be a bit awkward and serious-minded, but that does not hamper the skill Sayokuni’s sword is wielded.

http://i.imgur.com/l73x9sB.jpg
Chelsea Mackeroch
It is often said that without Chelsea, life on Cross & Grace would be extremely boring. This beyond-optimistic girl is full of energy like a particularly excited hamster on a sugar-rush. And while she might be ditzy and an oddball, she often notices things others might not, making her an invaluable partner when it comes to detecting enemies of mankind. Has quite the sweet-tooth.

http://i.imgur.com/PaoU8re.jpg
Muire Gullivan
Irish Executor who acts as a second-in-charge for Cross & Grace. Whispers say that this man has been acknowledged as a Saint by the Holy Church, yet there has been no official announcement. Still, he managed to defeat a Dead Apostle Ancestor that plagued his homeland of Ireland (though the vampire escaped.) Calm and collected, he is willing to listen to anyone before making any decisions.

Meiji Myoujingata
The current police chief of Tengetsu. Avid mystery novel fan, and always ready to get to the bottom of lies that cover the island he calls home.

http://i.imgur.com/RIxXEBi.jpg
Zenko Kourou
The maid of the Fujimura family. A cold individual who is master of harsh words, her lung capacity is said the be out of this world. Is also an apparent master of broom, wielding it like naginata against the plethora of pigeons that try to roost on the roofs of the estate.

An old man sometimes spotted on the streets. Likes to talk, even if he is a bit grouchy.

Owner of the Koharubiyori Inn. A Chinese immigrant and bit of an odd bird in Tengetsu. Quite the gossiper.

Since I have had a long time to prepare for this, here will be a bit of a taster of the sheet I am submitting. Since the old folks already know my sheet identity from the last time (and I have no intention to change), this will bring the newcomers up to speed, I guess.

No Insta-Summoning the moment you get out of plane

Hmm... Though, I wonder how we should do the summonings in a way that doesn't result in the Servants waiting for months to actually post. MW was pretty slow (heck, some servants never got summoned) and neither is Regalia that fast (most people haven't summoned yet, imagine if Servants were played by separate people).

Maybe a random draw to determine the arrival order beforehand and have the RP start at the "beginning of the Grail War" (or with the arrival of the final Master)? It would make more sense for Masters to arrive separately anyway, no?

Would also allow for some interesting prepwork, I guess.

This is the OP from the old OOC for those who need it.

FATE/MOON WHITE

The holy chalice has once again reborn.
In the cold north, on an island where snow never seems to stop from falling, the drums of war echo.
But this is not a war between nations.
It is a war between 9 magi.
It is a war between 9 heroes.
So, Masters, prepare to summon thy Servants.
So, Servants, prepare to fight for thy Masters.
This is the ultimate war for the one and only Holy Grail. This is the war where you can make your wishes come true. This is the war where the ancient tradition shall be repeated.
This is Holy Grail War.

Dance, holy, for the lunar beauty.
Your voice is the final turn of a miracle.
White Grail War.

-----------------------

This is Fate/Moon White. An RP set two years after the original Fate/Stay Night. While it borrows the already used concept of new Heaven's Feel, the setting and the way are now new.

Two years after the destruction of Fuyuki's Holy Grail, nine magi receive identical letters that invite them to a war held in a secluded island, off the north-coast of Hokkaido. This island, Tengetsu, is the setting of a new Holy Grail War that has appeared without explanation or apparent reason. The nine magi, drawn by the promise of getting their wish granted if they win, must now summon a Servant for themselves and prepare for battle.

However, that is not all. While during the nights Servants face off against each other, heroes of mythologies pitted in a fierce fight, Masters themselves are faced with a mystery much deeper than the battles of Heaven's Feel. Just why has the Holy Grail War resurfaced again? For what reason? Who or what made it possible? And for what end is all this done? A thick web of lies, mysteries and riddles cover the island of Tengetsu, and it is up to Masters to solve this puzzle, to see if they can find the true meaning behind everything seemingly simple laid before of them.

So, in other words, Fate/Moon White will be an RP combining aspects of the original visual novel with those of detective novels, a mixture of battles and mystery, without forgetting interaction between many different characters. Many outcomes are possible, and it is up to the players to see what will happen to the island of Tengetsu. This RP is not only about battles, as many other things will also affect the way the plot behind everything.

Most RPs are meritocratic now. Spots are generally contested. You'll probably have to wait until the rulebook is out to clearly see what class people are going with, unless you want to be a master in which case I doubt all spots are taken as of yet. Even then, they'll probably still be contested in the future.

And because it's been a while and so many people have expressed interest I went ahead and created a list for you guys:

Master:

Jormungandr
DB-L
Leftovers
Rafflesiac
I3uster
Kuroyuki
Dranes
Mooncake
Mormarth

Servant:

Mellon (Caster)
MssrNeko (Berserker)
Katie (Archer)
Snax (Assassin/Rider)
Vritra (Assassin)
Bloble (Saber)
Milbunk (Rider/Berserker/Caster)
Optimus (Defender?)

Undecided:

Mooncake (Servant?)
hero (Archer/Lancer/Rider/Master)
Antary
Elyrin
Tobias
Vagrant

I think so far Caster is the idea I'm liking best so I'm probably going to do one for that, but they might also fit well in the Berserker category so we will see.

So. Did we ever get a conclusive say on the whole "premade/randomized/both" pairs question?

Is it one or the other, or could both be used? It would make sense to have a mix of premade and randomized pairs, based on the makeup of previous canon wars.

No idea if it would be balanced or not towards the randomized pairs then though.

It's merit-based. Basically, pick something you like and make a sheet for it, and if it's better than the other guy's, you'll be picked. There are plenty of Master slots to get into, but also more competition. If you go for a specific class of Servant, you'll likely have less competition, but only one sheet will be picked for it.

Mostly because it'll make the Master/Servant relationships more important/interesting.

Honestly, most of the time, I feel like premade Servant/Master pairs have a more interesting and complex relationship dynamic going on, then randomized pairs. Far too often people just homogenize their characters down so as not to clash with the other member of the pair.

Not to mention you cant really plan for any sort of complex relationship interactions in the case of randomized pairings.

Eh, maybe its just me getting burned a few too many times with this mechanic.

Eh, maybe its just me getting burned a few too many times with this mechanic.

That "homogenized" character won't be getting in the RP, as the search is specifically for interesting characters. If you submit one, you are already setting up for a loss. And unlike pre-determined pairs, randomized pairs are "natural" in their interactions as they cannot expect everything to go smoothly. You're dealing with another being there, and backstabbing or betrayal has a chance of happening unless you find a common ground. RP-ing that Master/Servant relationship becomes an actual point, rather than something you can just plan ahead and present to me with bullet points.

Also, it effectively prevents players from creating "super-combos" where Master's and Servant's abilities mesh just perfectly to create game-breaking effects. I know some of you will try that.

That "homogenized" character won't be getting in the RP, as the search is specifically for interesting characters. If you submit one, you are already setting up for a loss.

I mean post approval, in the RP itself. People simply won't be RPing out specific conflicts (especially if there is a chance for there to be a tangible negative effect) and don't technically disagree with their Servant/Master in any significant way.

I feel like the larger issue at play would be Player/Player friction, rather then actual IC incompatibility of characters (e.g players who just don't mesh well, but are matched together regardless). IC backstabbing and betrayal are about as likely to happen either way, honestly (its just that it ends up being a more impulsive action with randomized pairs).

I feel that in the end we might up with honestly no interesting character conflicts (especially since its much harder to improvise a relationship that interestingly meshes in some way, and people might just choose to go with the very standard Master-Servant relationship we so often see in RPs).

Also, it effectively prevents players from creating "super-combos" where Master's and Servant's abilities mesh just perfectly to create game-breaking effects. I know some of you will try that.

This I can agree with.

I think that it can be curbed by balancing, but it is obviously an annoyance and somewhat tedious issue, which is a strong argument for randomized pairs.

Bloble
November 19th, 2014, 03:07 AM
Well Mellon, you can always hedge your bets and think up a way for your character to interact with a bunch of different kinds of Masters. Maybe even make a flowchart.

Because that would mean that they are pretty formulaic.

So you're arguing that if some people don't get to pair with the player they want, they refuse to play properly?

This isn't kindergarten.

Randomizing the pairs forces the Master/Servant relationships to be natural in style. It's not about a duo created to support each other or match perfectly with each other to create the most amazing story ever. It's like how it really is: two different individuals forced to cooperate in order to win something. This is what creates the dynamics between the pairs and players.

Also, "no character conflicts"? I'd much rather watch something improvised and actually surprising rather than something that's been planned since before the beginning of the RP and is now presented like two actors reading a script. An RP is and should be all about improvisation. Not covering all of your bases before the thing start so that everything goes exactly as you want it. Having your partner be someone who you don't know about, and who you don't know if you can trust, prevents that.

Alas, there is not much I can do about the "I don't like this player I don't wanna partner up with him" part. Like I said, this isn't kindergarten. I can, of course, make sure that there are some points of connection between the pairs, but that's about it.

It honestly is just more fun to play with somebody you get along well. I don't think we really would have any drama with randomized pairs but people definitely would be more motivated to post with people they talk to off-site.

I personally don't see the powerlevel concern in that as too big tbh if the Master/Servant powerlevel differential is Regalia-like. NPs carry most of a pairs powerlevel and those can't really be interfered with on a Master level.

Both ways of doing things have their pros and cons. Let's not defend either to death cause neither of them is perfect or follows 'the way it should be'.

If you are determined to go random, personally, I'd rather it not be... Well, entirely random. GM picks would be better, as random can give you interesting duos just as it can give you lame pairs and wasted potential. GM pick ensures good dynamics and allows for some balance to be done when matchmaking. Just in case, a non killing Master on summoning rule could be good cause that shit would be totally lame in a RP.

I like premade better, I honestly don't believe it is as scripted as you make it sound, but I am up for anything really.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but people tend to forget that dogs, if not of the toy veriaty, are hardy creatures by nature, they have systems that can handle or pass through things that would kill a human. Doubly so for healthy, outdoorsy type dogs that tend to get into a lot of things that aren't good for them.

I'm reading the Regalia rulebook so I can start at least prepping ideas to adjust/scrap when the MWR rules are published, and I just wanted to check something because I'm a little confused. Going over the Servants, I get that all your Parameters use up your class's allocated GP, and that Skills use up your TP, no problems there. I also understand that any extra NPs you want past your second cost you 4 TP straight up. Fine.

But do NPs have an actual cost other than this? Verg mentions in the rules that you sort of figure out the rank and then the Rank is what determines the Mana Cost, so obviously higher ranked NPs cost more Mana and thus already have a sort of cost imposed on them, but I realised when looking at the Saber sheet that if I wanted a Saber with, say, the following:

Lol El Cid SABER - 65 GP, 52 TP

STR: B (13)
END: C+ (10)
AGI: B++ (15)
MGI: B (13)
LCK: B+ (14)
Total: 65 GP

Magic Resist: B (8)
Riding: C (6)
Instinct: C (6)
Mana Burst: D (4)
Bravery: D (4)
Total: 28 TP

And 3 NPs (Hot Sword, Moar Sword, Fancy Horse) that's +4TP. But that's only 32 TP, so would I pour the remaining 20 points into just buffing the Skills by 4 points each even if it's maybe sort of unwarranted by the person's fame/legend, or is there an equivalent cost to the NPs for their actual ranks that would drain that 20 away, with say Rank B Hot Sword, Rank B Moar Sword and Rank D Fancy Horse?

hero
November 25th, 2014, 09:31 AM
You'd have 20 spare points to use in new skills, improve existing ones or buy NPs (provided you didn't reach limit). NPs have no cost besides the 4 TP thing, regardless of rank.

Vagrant

Oh. That... huh, I guess my Servant is going to end up stronger than what I consider him/her/it to be worth based on fame and achievements, even if it's not stuck in a high-tier class like Saber.

It's been a while since I read the rulebook, and I am on my phone so I can't check, but I actually thought it was 4 for three, 8 for four, and twelve for five.

Vagrant
November 25th, 2014, 10:10 AM
Yeah, reading back I can see how "extra NPs cost 4 TPs straight up" could be misconstrued. I meant each one cost 4 TP straight up, with no cumulative build up like 4TP for the third, then 6 more TP for the fourth, then 8 more for the fifth and so on.

Wowzers, I'm interested.

Although I'll wait for the official new rulebook first, I'd like to say I'm interested in the Servant spot for (non Hassan) Assassin, Caster, Lancer, and Archer. In that order for preference. Possibly a non canon class as well (Like Betrayer).

But if Assassin has to be Hassan, I won't want it anymore :<

You'd have 20 spare points to use in new skills, improve existing ones or buy NPs (provided you didn't reach limit). NPs have no cost besides the 4 TP thing, regardless of rank.

Also on skills, you must remember that it needs to make sense for your Servant to possess that skill, especially if we are talking about high-ranking ones.

For example to have A MR, you typically need to be an older Heroic Spirit, while to qualify for Eye of Art or Emperor Privilege, you need to obviously fulfill certain conditions in your historical backstory. Some skills (like Natural Body), require exceptionally reasonable, historical/mythological basis for it, which are extremely hard to fulfill.

So even if you have additional TP, you might not be able to use them to upgrade specific skills, if they don't make sense on your character or would seem like overkill (e.g A Bravery for a minor heroic deed, etc).

Vagrant
November 26th, 2014, 01:54 AM
I feel it'd be better to simply leave unspent points instead of applying a bunch of Rank E-C additional skills in such a case, even if they are skills that fit the character, but at the same time leaving your character deliberately handicapped for absolutely zero benefit seems both wasteful and counterintuitive for a Grail War.

Based on my figurings, the character I want to make only uses up about half of his GP and also half of his TP for his class container, following the Regalia rules :/

I think you would also need an explanation if you have a huge number of lower ranked skills, as you would need to be a polymath or something. I think you can slip by one or two lower rank, non-legendary skills but any more would require some sort of explanation I feel.

Its less relevant for the GP front. You can always say that the Heroic Spirit in question was buffed by his container or something along those lines. Classes that typically have high GP (e.g Saber) tend to have high stats regardless of the Heroic Spirit that was actually summoned (and even so, you can artificially lower your combat stats by increasing stats such as LCK and MGI).

Vagrant

Of course, all of this remains pointlessly hypothetical until the new rulebook. A guy who is modern has no place in this world as a Lancer.
