I announce today that we are doing a patch to add voices into FHA. Here is a proof of concept in the form of one of the first scenes patched.

We will be making more announcements regarding potential recruitment for assistance in audio splitting soon, but first we need to sort some more things out.

Let's move.

Operation Literally Insane was amended to Operation Only Mildly Insane due to one user being crazy enough to solo record everything for us, and Quibi putting together a voice insertion script. The only tedious part left is audio splitting.

This project is very relevent to my interests because, similar to the original 2004 Fate/stay night, I have trouble telling who is talking at a given time.

More importantly though, why wasn't the uploaded video 1440x1080?

At least yay for the 60fps.

My point is that you uploaded at 1920x1080 rather than 1440x1080; there was absolutely no content in that video that even used those extra 480 lines of horizontal resolution.

I was wondering where were the voices in the video. I could hear the birds chirp, the music, but the characters were silent. Maybe those voice files were yet to be added? But after watching all the video, all the character lines were silent, and it didn't make sense.
Then, I clicked on other videos and discovered that my phones broke just right now, and were muting exactly the frequencies associated with the human voice. :sader:

Considering such a project is never truly "finished" (and I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who works on real software projects in the professional world), that's kinda like saying he should just not do this at all. Put another way, it's like saying smaller software companies shouldn't make more than one product (which they obviously should, because the probability of being continuously successful with only one is extremely low).

Also, considering all the heavy lifting is being done by someone else, this project isn't as huge as you're probably thinking it is.

I would have assumed it relates to listening to the reams of audio recordings and cutting out and labelling each line

Jacktheinfinite101

Will splitting involve me holding my vita and double checking audio splits or something?

Well that would be helpful, but I'm not expecting every volunteer to have a Vita so I'm not picky about that. Though I would recommend having the scene open in the PC version and playing along with the recordings to ensure you split them properly.

I'm not interested in reading any of F/ha until the entire thing is complete. I've waited this long for the translation, so I can wait longer.

Besides, I completely forgot that F/ha didn't have voices whenever I mentioned me waiting for the complete translation...it wouldn't be a problem if the VN told you who was talking at a given time, but of course it doesn't.

Also, assisting in splitting would be way too tedious for me - I've learned the hard way that, unless it's something I really want to do, any sort of repetitive task will very quickly make me hate life and its entirety during the entire duration and some afterwards.

Heck it's bad enough that, even when I want the result to occur, I still usually end up being too miserable to continue torturing myself with the process to actually reach it - and from my experience I would probably say that the satisfaction doesn't make up for it either, especially when the end result is nowhere near as satisfying when it is torture to reach said endpoint in the first place.

This line suggests Shirou is going to continue teasing, but the tone in Shirou's voice does not sound like he's teasing, more like he's trying to get Saber not to feel bad because he's worried he pissed her off. Is this translation correct?

I was referring to my past posts found in other topics.

It's also not obvious that it lacks voices if one has never actually touched HA.

Yes it's also obvious if you consider that it's only a single year newer than the original 2004 F/sn, but I keep forgetting that HA is actually that old as well (I keep thinking it was released around the time of the PS2 Realta Nua).

EDIT: Dude, the DVD version of PC F/sn is newer than HA? Bloody nora, I never realized that (I even own the PC DVD version!).

hinode
March 4th, 2015, 06:11 PM
The sex scenes in FHA PC are also a clear sign that it was never voiced, but to be fair I'm not sure NM64 was aware those existed given how much he managed to avoid learning about FHA.

XerBlade
March 4th, 2015, 06:40 PM
Mahoyo isn't voiced.

I really shouldn't have to say more than that.

hinode
March 4th, 2015, 07:01 PM
Yes you do, because you just failed logic: A implies B does not necessarily mean B implies A.

Or in this case, A (sex scenes) implies not B (not voiced) does not necessarily mean that not B (not voiced) implies A (sex scenes).

XerBlade
March 4th, 2015, 07:29 PM
No, you just failed logic, because you totally assumed I was saying something I most definitely wasn't.

Rather, I was implying the opposite, that NOT having sex scenes does not imply voiced. Or rather, that not being voiced is not automatically related to whether or not it has sex scenes.
Along with a shit-ton of other implications. Like not being voiced is really only related to it being a first version release of a Type-Moon VN (because to date every VN they've made has ALWAYS been unvoiced, sex scenes or no).

In other words, apparently I really do have to say more than that, because I failed logic in assuming people on the internet could do logic besides the typical "You're wrong and I'm saying so in as insulting a way as I possibly can just so I can feel good about myself" sort of "logic."

NM64
March 4th, 2015, 08:39 PM
I actually knew HA had sex scenes - it's just that I know there are even nukige with voice acting, so I never really saw it as something that would prevent voice acting.

hinode
March 4th, 2015, 09:05 PM
That's the difference between VNs that cast eroge voice actors from the start and those that cast mainstream ones in console ports. With Little Busters Key even went so far as use an all-eroge cast for the heroines of the original, non-H version of Little Busters so they could make an eroge rerelease that kept the entire original cast.

Incidentally Key also went so far as to recast Tomoyo Sakagami for the sake of making Tomoyo After an eroge - that's the only case I can think of where a company actually went and recast a mainstream VA to allow for H-scenes, though I assume there's more obscure cases that I'm not familiar with. I suspect the Fate fanbase would've rioted over any attempt to recast Ayako Kawasumi, Kana Ueda, and Noriko Shitaya, though.

XerBlade
March 4th, 2015, 09:17 PM
That said, it's not like there are zero eroge voice actors in Fate, and you might be able to get basically any voice actor will do one if you throw enough money at them (a poor bunch, they are... also a bunch that is used to following orders like monkeys and selling their self-respect in general).

BTW, considering their was nothing that had those specific actresses that MATTERED before the voiced console port, I kinda doubt there would've been as many rioters as you might think. Around these parts of the internet perhaps, but that's a pretty small niche. Then add the fact that recasting characters between different mediums in these things is pretty common (like going from drama CD to anime, for example)...

Also, making non-ero console ports of popular eroge is not uncommon, even for those that are voiced from the start. I'm pretty sure the desire to add a voice over was not the big driving force behind the decision to drop the R18 rating.

hinode
March 4th, 2015, 09:49 PM
Strictly speaking, Sony doesn't approve any sort of hentai on their platforms*, so VN companies like Type Moon have to remove the sex scenes to release a console port at all. They just happen to take this as an opportunity to cast bigger names than would be otherwise possible in many cases.

*Aside from the super goofy loophole where, IIRC, porn on UMD video discs was okay, but porn in UMD games was still verboten.

Somewhat amusingly, while it is true that there are actresses with eroge experience in the Fate cast, they're pretty much all in non-heroine roles like Hitomi Nabatame and Shizuka Itou. I think Yuu Asakawa in FHA's the only exception.

Mcjon01

But for the exact same VAs to the voice the exact same characters they've voiced before? Seems a little unlikely if they weren't already doing something with straight up porn to begin with.

I was mostly thinking of how Suwabe voiced Reinhard in the original 18+ release of Dies Irae, but just did it under a fake name (トム・クノレーズ) and only switched to using his real one when the game went all-ages. Unless you think there's a VA running around named Tom Krooz who just so happens to sound exactly like him, lol.

Adding the little I know to the discussion: Kenichi Suzumura, the guy who voices Kokutou Mikiya in the Kara no Kyoukai movies, and who is very much a mainstream (and active) voice actor, actually voiced the main character in a hentai called "Sora no Iro, Mizu no Iro". And Ryōka Yuzuki (also active and mainstream), who among many other things voices Arcueid in Carnival Phantasm and Melty Blood (but not in the Tsukihime anime), did some eroge voicework in the past (I know she voiced in "Walkure Romanze" and "Kizuato"), and also worked as an idol, appearing in men's magazines and some movies that were rather explicit in violence, sex, and nudity, before she eventually moved on to mainstream voice-acting only.

So, I don't know enough Japanese to matter and I haven't read FHA yet, but I do know my way around audacity and audio editing in general. Is there a place for me to chip in on the splitting team? If you need someone to just cut up files whenever it switches voice actors, I could probably be all over that.

I don't know how much is "don't know enough Japanese to matter," but without the Moonspeaker skill tree you'd really need something close to 100% completion of Hollow's scenes to have access to the scenes in question and be able to know where exactly to splice the audio to which line break.

not exactly when VAs change, but when lines end. cuz Rin tends to get 20 or more lines in a row whenever doing exposition.

Jacktheinfinite101
March 6th, 2015, 08:59 AM
Even two lines in a row would screw you up if you had no knowledge of the scene the audio was used from. Hell, even a moonruner going into HA voice audio blind without knowing the scene context would be fucked. They'd understand everything said, but they wouldn't know when a character's speech is more than one line or not.

So splitting teamers need to... what?

have some knowledge of Japanese, listen and cut in parallel with reading F/HA?

I would have thought that even with a scene running on auto there would be a beat between spoken lines.

Mcjon01
March 6th, 2015, 01:26 PM
Can't you record everything on the absolute slowest auto speed so that there are easy to identify enormous gaps between every single line?

To be honest, I just sort of assumed this would be in there; splitting by identifying the end word from the exact dialogue is going to take way longer (and have a far smaller talent pool) than just splitting at a pause. Not to mention that it will probably increase the rate of error.

NM64

There already are huge gaps of silence.

Can't you record everything on the absolute slowest auto speed so that there are easy to identify enormous gaps between every single line?

That would nearly double the length of each recording, and since a good number of them already exceed 30 minutes (I think the longest one I have so far is Quartet at 53 minutes) at the fastest auto-play speed...

Mcjon01
March 6th, 2015, 05:19 PM
There already are huge gaps of silence.

Well then, as long as the shortest pause between separate voiced lines is significantly longer than the longest pause in any given line's delivery it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to automate the process of trimming a scene into separate files without any human input at all.

I think the issue is less of "is it possible?" but more of "how can we actually go about doing such a thing?".

In other words, we need the names of actual software that can do this.

I bet there are loads of places with random silence that will cut files in half and be really annoying.

Hen_Ichi
March 7th, 2015, 07:33 AM
I'm wondering about that.

The times when I've been messing around with things like subs or cutting audio. Since it's a consistent structure like playing lines in a VN I'm wondering if there's a consistent pause between playing lines we could nail down. (Can't trial because I seem to have deleted my FSN install at some point - oho... ho... ^^;)

- - - Updated - - -

But aye, if pauses in speech are longer between lines that's not gonna work

NM64

http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/silence_finder_and_sound_finder.html

I'm pretty sure that's what's already being used via my recommendation since that was the most automatic way I was aware of.

The issue is that it's not fully automatic - that process above only automatically locates silence, it does not automatically seperate the areas of non-silence into individual exported waveforms.

Also, using "Sound finder" works quicker since you can then just click one of the selection points and then directly export the selected area, but again - it's not fully automatic.

Hen_Ichi
March 7th, 2015, 08:03 PM
I'll belatedly admit I'm no expert - just throwing up ideas and googles - so tell me to shut up if ye don't wanna hear it.

Yeah, not totally automatic.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq_i18n?s=files&i=split
^If this works right, and if mentioned already pauses in speech are < pauses between lines then you can mark up and export multiple?

Jacktheinfinite101
March 7th, 2015, 08:31 PM
That would eliminate any track number errors.
(to explain what I mean, we're using a python script to insert the voice commands that reads off the track numbers of the audio files to insert commands in the correct order.

XerBlade

I must be dreaming. Someone I know is actually using Python without me telling them they should use Python first after hearing that they were trying to use some convoluted scripting language that is totally not suited to whatever task they're working on.

Guys, to makes thing easier isnt there a way to extract the files from the cartridge to get the voices this way? Like putting the cartridge in a PS TV and hooking it up to a computer through HDMI or USB? You can get rid of HDCP by using stuff like HDFury or something.

I actually just got my hands on FHA Vita still waiting for my HDMI spitter to come in so I can bypass HDCP, but after that I can do recordings in case USW misses something.

Also, I have discovered that

Carens I-IV have two versions, one with Shriou's VA, and one with Avenger's. The former is what you hear the first time, the latter unlocks after seeing the ending. Something to work into the patch.

The double version thing only exists for Carens 1-4, scenes of Shirou interacting with Caren beforehand are just Shirou while Caren V onwards is just Avenger. Well......Spider Ladder, the bad end version of the final choice, is uncertain, it might be Shirou. Also the scene where Illya reveals how the dream world works to Shirou is interesting because it's almost all Shirou, but there's one line or two spoken as Avenger.

That said I have to agree with Xer Blade, Pilz, and Chris on this, USW is making it possible. One person willing to record and submit the voice audio for the entire game is worth EXTREME praise.

It's like you've never listened to an awards acceptance speech in your life. When people say that somebody made something possible they just mean that it wouldn't have happened without them, not that it was literally impossible before. It's just a common turn of phrase, there is no reason to obsess over it and pick it apart like this.

I practically ignore most of the stuff they say right after accepting said award because very few times does it seem like they're being all that genuine and rather are just "going through the motions" for the cameras and press and the like.

And nobody on the planet says "he's the one that made this probable".
This is the same planet with people that use the word "literal" for things that are, in fact, not literal.

Basically the English language is a whole mess of non-literal and inconsistant things that rely on a person's judgement to interpret things correctly, so it's to be expected when you have someone (like myself) who happens to typically judge and interpret things a least a bit differently from most people.

literal
1. in exact accordance with or limited to the primary or explicit meaning of a word or text
2. dull, factual, or prosaic
3. true; actual

Also, totally no reaction to the epeen comments I see.

Also, totally no reaction to the epeen comments I see.

Because I'm not doing it for epeen - I have no interest in "gaining" anything out of this; if I did I would have abstained because i would have felt that my thoughts on the matter would be useful at all to the discussion.*

That's not to say I am completely unbiased - it would be very difficult for any human to be as such; the point is that I'm not doing it intentionally.

*For reference, I try to stay out of on-going conversations unless I feel that something important is being missed or that I believe something stated is wrong but nobody else has pointed it out. (the latter was the case here).

Recently upgraded from 0.97 to 1.01 (at least, that's what the patch in the OP said it was). Maybe it didn't overwrite 0.97 or something.

Justice and the kitten

Relying on her instincts, she found the one man destined to become a hero of justice one day!

Might just be me but "some day" reads better rather than "one day".

Come on, whether it is your favorite part of a cat...

Given that they've been using contractions this whole time, seems odd to suddenly see Maki of all people say "it is".

...A totally wild guess, but it's probably right.

Rather than "it's", maybe say "Himuro's"? I'm assuming that Himuro's story is correct.

Riding on my shoulders would definitely be high enough, but you're is still a girl.

Delete that "is".

Nobody important. Just someone who was happening by.

Is this a common expression? Would think "happened to be near/around." or "happened to be passing by." reads better instead of the underlined.

Kitty doesn't understand difficult stuff like that. Kitty likes Mr. Hero of Justice now, see

Nothing wrong with this line, it's just my favorite line in the scene.

"Happen by" is a reasonably common construction. OED and M-W both list it (and both at their fourth section for 'happen', presumably on account of some obscure dictionary-compiler's logic).

My instinct is that it's somewhat archaic but there's really no problem with it.

Maybe it's a regional thing then.

It's actually good to post such things here too since the voice patch would override any text changes done to the main patch, so I need to make sure any typo fixes are included in my patch as well.

However. Would it compatible with a completed F/HA? staged release with list of scenes would allow us to QC them right?

Yes. Yes! YSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Hahahahahaha!

Ahem, that said, after reading some of the discussion on what to do with the added content from the vita, and the presumably removed content - H-Scenes from the original, what did you guys decide to do? Hopefully it will be as smooth as F/SN with practically everything kept, and as much added in as possible.

XerBlade

There isn't really any added content worth mentioning, and the H-scenes weren't really replaced with anything this time, so...

Yeah, Realta Nua this is not.

As this person asked, is there anywhere to check the progress, like a google doc or something?

Also, just joined to cheer you guys on. I loved Fate / Stay Night and literally just started reading Fate / Hollow Ataraxia without knowing it was missing a voice patch (Had completely forgot about Fate / Stay Night needing one too). Looked you guys up and rejoiced. Keep up the good work!

Holy cow, it's been a while since I checked the forums and I come back to find the impossible task has not only been downgraded to "rather long and annoying but not nearly impossible" but that it has been started and is making progress! This is so cool! I like others had some difficulty at times figuring out who was speaking so it'll be great fun to go back through with the voices added.

Good luck guys! Thanks for continuing on and being awesome!

I created an account years ago, but never really used it. I'm logging in just to thank you guys, this is really awesome! The translation project of HA (the voiceless one) taught me the importance of waiting (thankfully only a little more four years in my case), take as long as you need to complete this great project! You mean H_Neko's post above yours? 'cause all I'm seeing is "I created an account years ago", and "thankfully only a little more four years in my case", so that doesn't add up with what you're saying. I'm not seeing any "one and one-fourth years" anywhere, which is why I asked. Maybe he edited his post I guess.

Oh, ok. Just me being stupid. :p After Xer's first post, I didn't understand that he was talking about the fact that H_Neko only registered in June 2014. Then in his second post, when he tried to explain it to me, I didn't understand that either, because when he put "one and one-fourth years" in quotes like that, I then assumed he was refering to H_Neko saying "one and one-fourth years" in his post somewhere, and that only made me more confused. :p Didn't realize he was making a joke at all, until you explained it. :p

As far as I'm aware, people have to actually sit down and record the audio from the game as its playing rather than just rip the files from the game itself due to however it was encoded. That takes time.

Now I'm really wondering how do people who do Realta Nua voice patch do their work. Were they patiently sit recording all audio, edit/cut it, then manually insert it into the patch like you guys are doing, because there is no method to directly extract the audio from the game?

Mcjon01

There are plenty of ways to directly extract the voice data from Realta Nua because it was released on plenty of systems that aren't the Vita.

It's actually pretty simple to extract the audio from Realta Nua. I mean, extremely. Even extracting from the PS2 version is easy as hell, and that's not even counting the obvious PC version that takes practically no real effort, 'cause the PC version wasn't out yet when the RN voice patch was made (actually, I can almost guarantee there never would have even been a voice patch for Fate/stay night if the PC version had been out before the PS2 version, because that would've been a complete and total waste of time).

No, because Realta was originally for the PS2 so it was possible to extract the audio files from the game disk.

FcoJ25
November 12th, 2015, 06:27 PM
The reason is even simpler than that.
PS2 games can rip, so to speak, while the PS Vita not.
So far it is impossible to rip a game of PS Vita, so they record the voices one by one.
