"Obviously Better Layout That Emphasizes Stick Handling" Makes me think of a Hockey stick arcade stick.
Which would be a feat, especially if it was usable as a hockey stick too. And Awesome. It would be sooooo awesome.

Kitty!
Okay... on my most current design, I decided to get rid of the HitBox(tm) layout- if only because I couldn't make it aesthetically pleasing.
Here's my initial image to use for the top panels. I'm looking for other images of these two to use as well.

The second draft of the case:

Here's the innards for my project box:
Of note - I'm terrible at woodwork. :(
Okay, I've completed designs for my artwork:
Spoilered for size
But onto the fun stuff - here's a hint to my next stick:
Spoiler:
I'm really bad at trying to focus on one project.
Here's an impulsive build - theme: Cupid's Bow:

Your dedication to fight sticks is commendable.
Thanks.
And here it is, wired!

Front
Spoiler:
Don't the wires sticking out the back mess with the way its held? You cant hold it like a bow, since you'd be crushing the wire when holding it, and you cant really sit it on your lap for the same reason, plus the bowstring.

.........
If I were making practical sticks, then I would be worried. However, I'm planning on bending the metal prongs so that they're more-or-less 90 deg to the side, which drastically changes the wires' directions. So at the very least, they aren't pointing towards me.
As for position, I'll probably have it between my legs, with the bottom point on the ground. I plan on a greater bend to the bow's arc, so I'll at least have a greater buffer too.
(Making excuses as I go)
So holding it like a cello or that santa you did? Interesting, though it would be cool if you managed to play standing and holding it like you were about to shoot. And maybe maining an archer character like Hawkeye in UMvC3.
After putting it off for 3 or so months, I finally finished the painting/curing portion of the box.

... though I might have messed up on the bondo part...
... I just noticed that I didn't even post the completed stick's pics...
Well, it's been done for a couple of months now.
Material:
Wood: 1/2" MDF & 1/8" Plywood
Clear 1/16" Plexiglass - 5" x 15.5"
24 mm screw-in Seimitsu Buttons (9) - Addendum: due to the stick placing, I had to remove the L2 and R2 (LT and RT) buttons.
JLF Sanwa stick (Quick Release) - with bottom support.
Kaimana LEDs (6)
Kaimana PCB
PS360+
Rare-Earth Neo something magnets (A lot)
2 Hinges
Metal Picture Supports/Bar (4)

Notes:
Rather than using screws to fasten everything, I decided not to. For the base itself, I affixed everything with Bondo and 1/2" Dia wooden shafts. For the top panels, I glued strips of metal onto their undersides and then glued the metal supports to the sides. 1/4" Dia magnets then kept everything together. The hinges were glued to the bottom of the buttons' panel, held in place with 2 1/2" Dia magnets. Those magnets are really annoying to pull apart.
I tried going for a mirror coat with paint, but due to the poor handling with Bondo, I decided not to. Maybe next time. Also, I broke the plexi a number of times. That wasn't pleasant. While the hole for the stick is in the center, the stick itself was not, so I had to grind away at the wood. I modded it with LEDs as well, so that it will gradually change colors from Red to Violet to Red again.
Heh, that pic with the rubber protector makes archer look naked. Turns it into a completely different picture. Also you lose points for not making the stick a penis head. This is the reversible one where you can move which side the stick is on right?
Pretty much. All I have to do if flip the Button's panel upside down - rotate it 180. I even have someone playing on it like that.Let me try to find it...Found it!
Big
Since I'm the most active here, I'll just announce this: I'll be moving to China in the next week, so I probably won't be able to make new sticks for a while. Sorry, my Super Unicorn Deluxe Pinata Stick, with its rotating horn being the joystick, will have to be delayed for a while. But to end on a lighter note, here's the concept for my next stick:
My God, it's full of stars!
P.S. If you have any interesting ideas or concepts, I'll see if I can make them when I get settled.
Screw that.
So after playing for a bit here in China, it turns out that my current stick's shape is rather uncomfortable. I, after all, stick the stick between my legs for better grip, but the wide box shape is really doing a number. Ergo! New concept!

What do you think? (Personally, I was thinking more of a mahogany color, but Sketchup didn't have it :()
Note: Imgur is banned in China. The more you know.
Broken Links.

Is there an image host you'd like to recommend? Since I went through 4 ish and apparently they all don't work. >:[
Alright, I got a VPN, so here's a model for my next stick. I've based this off of the Hori RAP 4 Premium, with a number of changes that you probably can't see. The most important though is the bottom chamfer - holding a stick between my legs hurts after a while, so the shape supposedly is going to fix that.

Material wise, I am planning on using a type of plastic instead of wood. This is in no way related to the current ban of power tools on me, nosirree. For the walls, I was thinking of 25mm thermoplastic (gotta see what's around), with the top and bottom panels being 1.5mm of sheet metal. The top panel will also have 2-4 layers of 2mm thermoplastic similar to Wonderflex.

And I made some sample artworks. Which do you think I should use? Keep in mind these are all drafts, so I didn't exactly use high res pictures:
