And yes their have been many cases of family circuit's degraded through generations. The Matou's being the first example

No I don't think the degradation was Zouken's fault then it was just a twist in Fate, which he accepted.

The decline of the Matou house happened when Zouken first became head of the Makiri's which was 500 years. He only moved to Japan 200 years ago to start the Heavens Feel.

I always thought it was implied to be Zouken’s fault, and if he hadn’t refused to die he could’ve passed on his crest. Without doing that the Matous would surely die out.
