It's certainly doable, but probably not super easy or we'd have seen it used a lot more.

I just remembered that Tokiomi and Kirei had to use crystals or what-ever-it-was-gizmos to communicate with each other, and clearly neither of the two were amateur magi. (You could say Kirei was, but he was at least good enough to be teaching Rin, so).

Communications through a preexisting pathway is more efficient, whether already-existing mage-familiar pathways or mystic codes built for it.
