K, but this seems like the "do we have free will" debate, which involves flipping the table by changing definitions to something more flowery than its actual definition. The human race just means the species of humans, nothing more, nothing less. This isn't wrong, but it's over conceptualizing a simple definition.

if you write a story in which 'humanity' refers to a 'history', or a 'form of life', which can be 'changed' e.g. by someone like tesla (lol reddit) or hitler, then it is already implicitly being conceived as something more than an abstract biological category. animal or plant species do not have 'histories' in the sense that humans do, because 'history' refers to a domain which is exterior to the purely biological life of the organism. definition is not simple and cannot be 'over-conceptualised'. you (and nasu, and all his subcontractors for that matter, so you're in good company i suppose) are on the contrary criminally under-conceptualising it.
