Dragon Age has kind of always been this exercise in aggressive mediocrity.
Why is the default melee attack animation so crap?

(Yeah, still on the melee-only vanguard kick).

Democracy on Beast's Lair
If we look to the rest of the animation we may yet find a clue
Really, what purpose do you find in hanging about the thread of a game you aren't playing but have nevertheless made up your mind to dislike intensely? Is it so important to you that you have something to disapprove of?

You might find this hard to believe
But I was actually hoping this would be good

Also this thread predates ME3, let's not pretend this is an enjoyment only zone
Measures of quality so far uncovered: some of the art is subpar and one random NPC has an awkward conversation. (Okay, and I think I agree with Leo that the combat is generally a step back from ME3, if not a huge one).
This is nothing. We know sod all about how genuinely good the game is. That will come with things like actually playing through the story and interacting with the characters.

Good news, general impressions (including the press) seem to be those are terrible too! Maybe you'll decide differently, but it seems a bit of a waste as far as gamble purchases go.
Also the game is bugged out the ass but so what else is new

Rodyle, you will simply never understand the joy of being so tired as to be almost completely unfocused and yet finally manage to finish a fucking alien sudoku puzzle and then go run away from an angry cloud.
<NEW FIC!> Revolution #9: Somewhere out there, there's a universe in which your mistakes and failures never happened, and all you wished for is true. How hard would you fight to make that real?

How's the writing of this one, overall?
Tbh I don't really know how to compare it to the OT because it's a completely different narrative, different style. In terms of dialogue it's okay, a few "ehhhh" moments but certainly not anything that spoils the overall experience. I feel like the overall quality there is actually raised by the voice acting, which for the most part is really good. It's something of a slow burn kind of game, even by ME/BioWare standards, but I like what it is so far. If nothing else I can say I'm genuinely interested in furthering the plot, which isn't something you can say often for an open world game; that, and going off-course and doing sidequests still feels like you're contributing to the whole settlement process and stuff, as opposed to something like Fallout 4.
Oh, and I stumbled upon the controversial trans lady, it's barely even a big deal in context. You specifically have to ask her why she came to Andromeda - something you can ask just about everyone - and that's it.

Is the plot engaging, at least?
And how's the PLOT?
Haven't got to the PLOT yet
The plot's pretty engaging so far, yeah. It's very refreshingly different from the Commander Shepard story. Some decent side-quests as well.
