Well dunno, all I can say is that people have been noticing a considerable difference in summoning frequency once they fully maxed their main weapon to +5 or +10.
Wait long enough and I guess everyone would be maxing out everything they have.
There's no name engraved ring, but apparently you can set codewords in the menu for matchmaking with specific players. I don't know if it expands the summon range though.
It basically uses the same system Bloodborne used, so it works for the range, at least for those who are using the same password.

I started replaying Dark Souls to prepare for III because A) duh and B) I never actually finished it (・ω<), but for some reason PC matchmaking was all screwed up when I started so nobody could connect to any nodes. I finally beat Dark Souls for the first time and now I guess the fun truly begins playing through DS1 more or playing the other souls games.
