First Caesarko x Jeanne, then Rin x Sion, now this... it's Five's very own Unlimited Yuri Works! And in the storied Type-Moon tradition, the ratio of plot to porn is trending ever upwards.
It's for the best, though, since we get to see how Ryougi would have acted had she given in to the murderous impulses and emptiness that haunted her in KnK. I didn't expect this fic to turn so dark, quite honestly, and Rin's ability to forgive Shiki was certainly food for thought. I suppose Rin's regret over how she handled Sakura establishes a persuasive basis for that forgiveness, true, and the power of love must also play a role.
At the same time, I can't recall very many love interests who have deliberately committed wrongs to the degree that this universe's Ryougi has, yet are also such sympathetic characters at the same time. Kohaku and Sakura come close, but mitigating circumstances come into play to varying degrees (and no, I don't want to start a debate about that). The Ryougi here, on the other hand, presents a much starker dilemma: what can you do if the person you love is also a murderer? That Rin responded with love and a focus on the future was inspiring.
Well, Leo wanted a happy ending. :P
I don't usually write purely dark endings; more often I'll opt for something bittersweet or tragic. Pure dark is just silly.
