Sure you can. Just because it has sex doesn't mean it also contains adult themes. In fact, if anything, I'd say a lot of works which deal with sex in some way are actually quite juvenile in that regard.

Also, to address your specific argument: OBVIOUSLY you can dismiss an entire work because of a specific element. No one needs to treat "The Birth of a Nation" seriously, just as an example.

Well, there's dismissing and there's dismissing. The Birth of a Nation clearly should be dismissed in its loathsome ideology, but you can still appreciate its important innovations in cinematography (to give one example, it basically created the imagery of the cavalry riding to the rescue that pops up in just about every cowboy/western movie ever). The Turner Diaries would've been a better example, since it's wholly lacking in both ideological and literary merit.

Seriously, though, that movie's contributions to cinematography are overrated; a lot of its techniques had already been employed in other films, it just gets the credit because it was the most (the only?) commercially successful of the bunch.

And that's the crux of our disagreement. I don't know what "The Birth of a Nation" is about (google shows me a movie about a slave uprising?) but you can't dismiss it out of hand just because it deals with a subject you consider controversial. You can learn a lot by studying "Mein Kampf" too, even if it was written by Hitler.

I'm not a film buff so I won't dispute your claims that BoaN isn't as important as commonly thought. I was just making the point that you can condemn a movie's ideology and still take it seriously as a work of filmmaking. Though I will say that commercial success isn't insignificant either. If there were a bunch of other movies that used those techniques but none were ever commercially successful, it's quite possible those techniques wouldn't become nearly as popular or archetypal as they are now, at least in their current forms. (Admittedly, convergent evolution means that some cinematographic techniques would probably arise independently given enough time).
