It's kind of amusing the double standard Disgaea has. Murder, war and environmental destruction are okay if demons are responsible but when humans so much as pollute the air a little it's a horrible catastrophe. It's sort of like the double standard you have in regards to oni and humans. Oni using their strengths is perfectly natural and just the normal way of things, but when humans resist using theirs it's cheating. Shuten's position as I understand it isn't so much 'Being slain is just the way of things' so much as 'Well, small wonder they killed me after I hung around outside their capital snacking on people.'

But that's just it. Demons may kill hundreds of people in a single night for tangible reasons, such as food and reclamation, while humans can kill millions in a single second for intangible ones, such as religion and honor. Trust me. EDF warships in the sky are much more terrifying than a swarm of those snake/worm demons from InuYasha (yes, I was into InuYasha when I was playing Disgaea 1, and I still really like Kanna).

Also what's with those numbers? I don't remember the story implying humans killing anything like that number of oni for reasons like those but maybe I missed something?

Hiroshima. Arima in Tokyo Ghoul: Jack once said that ghouls are the greatest threat to humanity. He can say that because the title of the series is Tokyo Ghoul, not Hiroshima Ghoul. Also, before Disgaea, I was raised on stuff, like Castlevania, where when humans do wrong, they are a "hard lot", and when demons and undead do wrong, they "don't belong in this world". Disgaea was like a breath of fresh air combined with a reasonably sized orgasm (Etna helped).
