Yeah, it's pretty much just a fun way of referring to Gil's almost-supernatural perceptive abilities. Apparently he can perfectly gauge an opponent's strength by looking at them, too, which is the real way he'd avoid Tsubame Gaeshi if he ever fought Kojiro -- that is, he would know better than to try to fight him with swordsmanship in the first place.

Rider (Medusa) have similiar ability. In the end of 15th, if player chooses "fight back using projection", she is able to understand what Shirou is going do, when he just activates his circuits. When she comments what this ability has no use for her and promptly leaves.

Rider has "magic sense". It is one of her ways to compensate for lost vision. She can sense the disturbance in mana or circuit activation.
Also, there are subtle physical signs of magecraft activation. Rider can probably detect those with her heightened senses as well.

It's not "human life". The Concept is "a finite life span", or "天寿". In other words, Black Barrel forcibly inserts "Death" into something that simply cannot die. That's how Gun God "killed" Venus. Also, there's the "Fifth True Theoretically Element" (the stuff Black Barrel is made of), which totally screws up anything that's made of Ether.
Black Barrel may or may not be the silver bullet for Cthuhlu, depending on what its true nature is. Cthuhlu may actually have a lifespan, and it may not be made of Ether. Then Black Barrel is kind of useless. It would be just better to fry it with a large beam.
