I mean, I guess it was kind of important as a baseline story so the other routes could be different as things went more and more wrong, but by itself the route is pretty boring.

Because Fate route is the worst part of the whole thing, i mean if you take the routes individually as stories, Fate ranks on the same level as Extra for me, which is below Fragments and Apo. The route only begins to redeem itself after Shirou gets Gae Bolg a second time.

Also when I'm talking about Fate it's mostly just it's a story, the fights in the route are still good tho, but everything else is bad with Shirou's constant attitude to Saber that just makes you want to whack him.

I wouldn't say it's the worst or anything, it's just dull and sometimes dreary where I want to put the book down and read something else. For me, I look at the Fate route the way I look at Fate/Extra. Good story, but I would only read it once and never look back. It doesn't have re-read/replay value to me.

That seems a little Harsh. You'd need to be sitting at the bottom of the Dead-Sea with an industrial drill to be below fragments.

But I thought Shirou didn't Confess to Kirei until his own Route?

Oh wait, he never actually said it aloud, so it doesn't count.

Cursed Arm helped do away with Saber and teamkilled Lancer (and in movieverse does away with Caster) versus one loss to Rider, that's not actually a bad track record

You're forgetting his losses to Herakles and Archer. Plus, the only reason Lancer didn't kill him was because of Kirei's order, so I still count that as Assassin's loss.

He actually has a worse record going against Masters since he doesn't finish Shirou, Kotomine, and gets ganked by Sakura

Yeah, but that's respectively because Zouken forbade him from doing it, Kotomine was immune to his trump card, and Sakura was hardly a regular Master at that point (plus, he was weakened by not having a Master-Servant link anymore).

I like to think of the night patrol sections of Hollow Ataraxia as Fate S2, since Shirou and Saber actually act like a semi-competant Master and his Servant there.

True, but Shirous attitude through the the three fourths of the story just ruined it for me, even if you take someone like Sieg as the weakest Fate protag because of his blandness, Shirou in Fate just made me want to hate him during it and I can only start to accept when his views were explained in the last fourth, still don't like it tho.

I mean most of his views can be explained by him being a hormonal 16-year old who just doesn't want to get his shiny new girlfriend killed.

Also there's the fact that in UBW he, at least in my memory, is a lot less overprotective of Rin, a person who is far more likely to get killed than Saber.

TBF Rin is canonically stronger than Saber.
