If we must be fair, back then everyone was the sole token anything of the Fate series. Shirou was seen as the token standard harem protagonist (even leaving aside the argument on whether he's actually that or not, that's still the most common perception of him), Rin was the token Tsundere, Gil was the token bragging broken character, Medusa was the token sexy temptress, Artoria was the token Saberface. Now we're swimming in all of those things too, sometimes literally.

Fate just grew up to include more of everything. Except for, I don't know, women who actually look old, maybe?

Making the books sellable at normal bookstores takes too much time, effort, and money. Why do that when they know their fans know how to buy self-published books from doujin shops?
I believe Amazon is the easiest way to buy TM books now.
