I remember them being a lot more entertaining than 3D fighters when the only 3D fighter you could play was taking martial arts classes at a mcdojo or signing up for boxing lessons at the local rec center
I've played a lot of 2D fighter games in my life, favorite is still BlazBlue. The only 3D fighter game I played was Pokken Tournament so idk about other ones. But I think Fate chars tend to look better in 2D than 3D so I'll go with 2D.
At this point they've evolved to be nearly completely distinct genres that share jargon, so it's kind of pointless to compare, really. It's like Unreal Tournament 3 and CoD 2.

i mostly grew up on tekken, budokai tenkaichi and ultimate ninja storm and i found the 3D ones a lot more entertaining and only starter playing them way after being introduced to 3D ones
A few years ago, I'd have said Last Blade 2 was the best 2D fighter ever, while the Fatal Fury series possibly had the best characters, but then I played the JoJo fighting game.

Nah, they're all strictly 2D. At most, the Fatal Fury series has the plane-shifting thing, but it's still 2D.
