I love this guy. Really, I do.

Gags aren't always bad. And I never got sick of the 'Merry doesn't get tech' gag, so I'd say it's been pulled off well so far.
Goddamn. It's really just me?
Bear in mind he's been brought up in an environment where quills and abac... uses? abacacs? abaci? are probably in common usage.
Yes, he should be able to use light switches. No, he's never used a computer.

You can't make an omelet without breaking a few Tohsaka. -Fafnir
Naruto is just a shitty little boy taking up space that would be otherwise taken up by competent, otaku-ego-crushing badasses. -Five_X
I anticipate the day when the HA translation comes out and everyone realizes that Caren is the least sexually dominant character in the universe. -Kotonoha
Gun control programs are actually a mage-financed government plot to make mankind start generating hero units again. -McJon
In the end, it's his lack of grasp of technology that laid him low. Had he known satellite imaging was a real thing, he would've never been found out.
When I think of a spellcaster who's bad with tech, I think Harry Dresden. Butcher pulls this off with dignity; craigslist is brought up, briefly explained, and dismissed without any silliness. The fact that he has to rely on another to look something up online is relevant, and done well enough.
If MC had just gone, "Satelites? What're those? Aw, shit." then I would've enjoyed that. But when he went all, "Cameras in space? Lemme tell you why that's silly..." that's when I just closed the tab.
And that's all I have to say about that/Forrest Gump
That's a shame. You're missing out on a fantastic story over something comparatively petty.

Personally, the tech thing shouldn't have even been an issue for Shirou in IF, yet it was used. Here, it annoys me on a small level.
Most have already seen my commentary on what I mainly dislike: the interaction and situation with Uzume and Chiho, along with the major feeling I can't shake off that Akitsu will get killed in the newest chapter.
The tech thing is reversed for me. With Shirou in IF it's annoying as hell. Here I accept it because Magi are backwards barbarians.
Spoiler:
I know that. I just felt it was done badly.
It's like the pluses on Servant stats. He can go up to three times more arrogant under the right cirumstances.
Spoiler:
Except Harry is very modern. Dresden Wizards only don't use tech because it malfunctions on them, but they do know about it.
The Clock Tower seems to actively refuse to know about it, hence Meriwether's complete confusion. It would be downright weird if he wasn't this clueless.
Harry isn't quite up to date with tech; websites and software eludes him by necessity, and I doubt he knows the difference between a smart phone and a cell phone. Those things are just filed under "Things that I don't know, or care, about."
I kinda picture the Clocktower being the same way, but a little more and scaled back a hundred years. Computers? Heard of 'em, some sort of thinking machine, bad idea in my mind, what if they turn on you. Cell phones? Those are the little phones people carry around, right? Bah, who needs 'em. Satellites? Something in space, far away and therefore not my problem.
