I think I just got in a staring match with a stray cat... and won.

Not really, I was up there in the balcony and when I looked down there was a cat lying on the sidewalk. Then it looked up and we got in the staring match. It lasted for a little over a minute (I think? I wasn't counting, plus my eyes were almost with tears from the irritation of not blinking for a long time) when the cat turned his head and simply walked away.
But it was very cute. Not so big and orange with a white belly.
IIRC, that's how cats show you are the boss (or, more likely, that now is not the time to mess around with you).
I don't know if he's feeling sick or what, just that he looks utterly adorable. He's like an empty sockpuppet (and the way he "comes back to life" if you rub his chest... aaaaaaaaaw).

Going by fail!Biology logic, it's the father. Since it looks like a cat, the mother must be a cat.
