I actually used that idea for a fanfic, though it's pretty much dead by now...
What if Kiritsugu or Iris summoned themselves? Is that even possible? I think the former might be, but I recall hearing somewhere that Caster Irisviel was a special case.

Neither is possible. Kerry becoming a CG was an abnormality caused by the Singularity.
That said, fanfic is fanfic.
The Throne Of Heroes is outside of time though, so why wouldn't you summon that possibility of Kiritsugu Emiya even if it was never actualized in our particular version of history?
Mind you, even the regular EMIYA came from a possible future that'll never occur in canon. (Since Nasu said that the chances of Shirou ending up in EMIYA's shoes from any of the three canonical routes are essentially zero)

But isn't it conceivable that you could somehow summon a Kiritsugu from an alternate timeline where he became a Counter Guardian (just as regular EMIYA was summoned from a timeline where Shirou become one)? It wouldn't even have to necessarily be for the same reasons as in the singularity, either.

Not precisely. Infinite timelines do not mean infinite possibilities. For example, the reason Kotomine never appears in Hollow is because even in an infinite multiverse, there is no possible possibility where he survives the 5th Heavens Feel.

Yeah, I suppose that's fair enough. It seems kind of arbitrary what possibilities count as "legitimate" and what ones don't, but I suppose you just have to accept that as a way the setting works. Also, otherwise Masters would probably be summoning CG alter-egos of themselves all the time, which obviously isn't the case.

As somebody unfamiliar with GO though, was it ever explicitly stated that Kiritsugu becoming a Counter Guardian is something fundamentally impossible outside of that particular singularity, or just that was the particular way it happened to manifest? (Not necessarily ruling out him becoming one in some other far-flung timeline)
He doesn't exist in human history.
But since human history is incinerated, he exists in FGO.
