Shingeki no Kyojin or Attack of the Titans

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Elen and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Elen vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

A manga that has suddenly become the hot new action series in Japan despite being relatively new. Fans of Berserk & Claymore will like this series.

I like how the author put so much effort into making the normal titan fightin gear realistic, even going so far as to consult sciency people, and then there's the main character turning into a titan like magic. Well the titans seem to be pretty magic anyway so I guess that's fair game.

i read about 10 minutes of it and then stopped because i could tell the story was going to be full of holes. it could maybe be good if more than 10 seconds went into character development

More then 10 seconds (not sure what this means exactly since this is a text and image medium) goes into character development, if the character is important enough. It just doesn't happen all at once.

Just look at the name, Ymir is a giant from Norse mythology.

Do you remember the man with the journal who talked with the Titan a few chapters back?

A talking Titan is brick-shit worthy enough of its own (which means yes, the recent chapter with the hairy, talking bigfoot-esque Titan was also a wham moment for me), but the Titan specifically spoke of a certain name before the guy was promptly devoured after he lost his cool (smart idea, shit-talking a giant that can eat you without a second thought):

"Ymir."

If that's not indicative of something, I'll eat my shoe. And it's a big shoe, too. My thoughts are that that Ymir and this Ymir are either one and the same or have some connection with each other.

Also, on the Titan in the house; did it fall from the sky...or was it 'born' there?

Well, this chapter pretty much confirmed my suspicions on the origin of that Titan (and most likely all titans). But what triggers it, and why it happens in the first place, is yet to be seen. It certainly explains their deformed appearance though, to an extent.


Also the orangutan-like titan makes another appearance.

I really like this manga. It seems to be taking quite the effort to set up new and interesting points about the titans, slowly feeding us stuff without telling us the whole story. I imagine the real hurdle will be when most of the truth is inevitably revealed about the titans at some point in the far future. That will probably either be where the story gets to be a masterpiece or sinks.
