The comedy content was fairly low compared to the MCU. I mean, compare the Raimi films, which definitely had humor (like Peter smashing into a wall) but there was no humor effect in-universe. We laughed, the characters didn't. That's the difference.

Agreed. This is the problem with reboots, they already adapted Ben's death very well so it's difficult to keep that without feeling like a retread.

But Iron Man doesn't work for me because it's so blatantly inconsistent in Peter's behaviour. 8 months after Ben's death: he's living life normally. 8 months after Iron Man's death: he's unable to cope.

It just takes me right out of it.

What if Uncle Ben just died from like, a normal heart attack or something. MCU Aunt May seems down to clown with heavier guys after all.

People weren't pressuring him to be the next Uncle Ben, though.

I'm aware, but that in itself doesn't sell it for me. It still makes it look like he cared more about Tony than Ben.

But I guess the inconsistency shouldn't surprise me when May's character changes without onscreen development. Homecoming: super protective of Peter. FFH: completely down with Peter fighting supervillains. It's a damn shame that Infinity War had to happen just after Homecoming because it prevented us from seeing just how May reacted to finding out Peter was Spider-Man.

Shouldn't May be even more protective of Peter after the snap? Or was she also one of its victims?

I believe the part of how May reacted to finding out Peter was Spider-Man that we did not see was “uck!?”

Very conveniently, everyone of import to MCU Spider-Man was blipped.

No, but this is one movie for which I don't mind spoilers.

...Shit like that is what started to sour me on the MCU.

Aunt May got blipped, and when she came back the new tenant’s wife thought she was his mistress

I liked the first one solely for the confession scene. I remember that moment because it was the moment where I actually decided to start following Spiderman.

Finally watched the movie. It was fun! Mysterio's "powers" made for really interesting fight scenes, and there wasn't as much focus on Stark as I feared there would be - it was much heavier in the first movie, for instance. My only two complaints is that Thanos' snap may as well have been erased from history from all the impact it has had on the characters specifically and the world in general, and that Peter and MJ's relationship evolved entirely offscreen from one movie to the next.

Just dropping in to say that I am also in the "liked the first two Spider-Man movies" camp. Even the third, though I can justifiably see why people bash that one. Fucking Harry amnesia.

I also preferred Ang Lee's Hulk to all the ones that came later. I'm ready for the firing squad, bring it on.

Anyone who hates the Dark Peter dance from Raimiman 3 is a clown in my eyes. Absolute GOAT and insurmountable peak of marvel.

Contrary to popular wisdom, I don't think Venom was the main problem with 3 - though yeah, the character could have used some work. I think the problems were Sandman and Gwen Stacy.

Well, the plotting was really weak, too. How convenient, that the symbiote would fall to Earth exactly at the spot where Peter is! How convenient, the heretofore unseen butler tells Harry about his father's injuries and he just accepts the explanation!

  17. #2057
Huh, I thought Sandman at least had potential

My main problem with Sandman was inserting him into uncle Ben's death, only to resolve it in the weakest way possible at the end - "Oh, no, it really wasn't my fault, it was my partner who was a psycho". Thanks, Sandman! We're... ...back exactly where we started, actually. Weak.

The real issue with Sandman is that he's superfluous. You can cut him out entirely without sacrificing anything of the core story.
