Is it really a pen name if all you do is stylise the romanisation of your name?

I seemed to remember that that's not his real name, but Wikipedia says it is, so... eh, I guess?

I mean, about as much as me writing my name in Japanese would be, were such a thing possible, anyway.

The whole thing is a pen name, from the kanji to the way it’s stylized

Huh, I was under the impression that "Nishio Ishin" was his real name.

Now I have egg on my face.

Also, NisiO isiN is a pen name and a palindrome. You gotta thrust spell it right or it doesn't work.
I found this thread because I googled "Kinoko Nasu bad writer" and similar search terms because I wanted to figure out why people think his style is bad. Then I found this thread.

Oh yeah, I think the stuff explained in this lecture makes up a good portion of what makes Nasu's work tick:

well, the other challenge of translating TM fiction is whether the Japanese speakers are familiar with the references to other stories, popular culture, and blog posts that Nasu likes to mix in. This part isn't so much Nasu as it is asking whether the native speakers are read up on all the TM fiction, and naturally there just aren't going to be that many of those.

And tbh it's pretty hard to get Tamamo's voice right in English. I don't think I've seen an attempt I liked yet.

quite! A vague recollection of one of your interesting translation tales.

Tamamo in particular I thought came out with vague references to mythology minutae. Another rather high bar for most native speakers/readers to clear.
