The word "gay" might be a slight hint. I dunno, maybe it's not strong enough. I do see how it could be very ambiguous. Perhaps we should re-name them to "Seriously, straight people, please piss off" bars?

For real, Polly's right. Straight people turning up to gay clubs for special occasions is the number one peeve of their regular clientele, for all the reasons she's said and several more. Even above people having messy drunk sex for too long in the toilets, and the drinks becoming crap by the end of the night. That means it's pretty deeply felt.

It can and does vary by bar/club - some are more inclusive and really don't see a problem as long as the tourists are respectful. Lots will tolerate straights even if they don't want them because their patronage keeps the place propped up financially. But for the most part, yes, Seriously, Straight People, Please Piss Off bars would like you to piss off.
