What's it like in IRC? I always wanted to check it out, but I'm a:

I joined last year so I'm relatively new and I was a awawa-ing mess, but everyone's been nice to me and I feel welcome. Would recommend joining if you like the people.

IP, probably, but what are we going to do to you

It shows your host name, like say "comcast.net", "telus.net", unless you register your nick and get a vhost to mask it.
Also don't enter your real name even if a field is labeled as "real name".

Hop in now if you want to take a look, it's quiet but there's a few of us alive!

If you're really worried, you could log onto the IRC server but not join the channel at first, register your nick, get a vhost, then join the channel.
That way, even if someone somehow was your mortal enemy secretly lurking as one of the regulars of the channel, you won't risk showing what internet provider you use.

Or just don't worry about it, who cares about your IP address being shown lol

If the IRC server can't resolve(?) your hostname, it shows a part of your IP address instead of your host, but that's just a part of it, something that looks like ihw-[random characters].[random characters].[3 digits].[3 digits].IP so I think that's not enough information to people to track you down just from IP.
