Oliver Twist?

O filho eterno (The eternal son). A book that takes place in the 80s about an unemployed Humanities student on his late twenties who becomes a father. He didn't even want a son but starts getting excited when his wife is giving birth as he's going to do a damn good job raising his son so that people will praise him for being a good father.

But then he discovers that his son has Down syndrome and suddenly his entire life is over. His son will never be independent, he'll waste the rest of his life with the burden of taking care of him yadda yadda. Then he starts getting happy. Why? Because people with Down syndrome have low life expectancy. That's right, he's happy because his son will die early. He estimates five years, maybe three if he gets lucky. He can already see himself at the funeral and looks forward to how his life will move on. He fantasizes about comforting his wife after the death and receiving condolences from his friends. And when his son starts showing signs of good health? He feels upset.

And the worst part? This book is an auto-biography. The author denied it in an interview but the guy's had a son with Down syndrome, the book takes place in the real word (he makes references to real historical facts), and the protagonist is writting a book that has the same title as a book the author wrote. And let's now even touch how the book's written instead of merely the subject: a complete mess that doesn't go one page without mentioning a famous writer/philosopher/whatever.
