Had a weird dream last night: snippets of a Hollywood live-action adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion that was actually decent. It was like the Rebuild of Evangelion meets Pacific Rim meets Independence Day meets Avatar.
Instead of being a remake, it was a "continuation" in a parallel universe set after a Fourth Impact. The basic plot was similar to the beginning of Evangelion, where the world's military believes they can handle the threat without intervention from NERV and the EVAs, they can't, and the EVAs are mobilized. The world is in ruins and humanity as a whole is surviving / launching attacks from underground. NERV is an ostracized organization with the EVAs and their pilots being labeled criminals / unfit for deployment.
Other things (the snippets I was talking about):
- NERV is now a small handful of people with the last few surviving EVAs and their pilots.
- The EVAs are best piloted by two people.
- The curse of EVA is still a thing, only the pilots stopped physically aging in their early-mid 20s.
- The only active pilot is Asuka. Mari is dead, Rei is missing (presumed dead), Shinji is in a coma.
- After she saves them from the threat single-handed in her modified Unit 02, some kids decide to follow her back to NERV HQ.
- Asuka becomes a reluctant teacher to a new generation of EVA pilots.
- Asuka wants to wake Shinji back up 'cause unrequited love / "I can't do this by myself after all, baka Shinji".
- The Angels are a race of giant aliens.
- The surface world is a mixture of Pandora, red desert wastes, and ruins of human civilization.
- The EVAs (and by extension to a much lesser extend, their pilots) are Angel-human hybrids.
- Kaiju are a thing.
- CGI was next level.
