But isn't it really hard for matured brains to learn a new language via total immersion? I thought that sort of thing became markedly less effective after about age 5...

Bah, don't remind me. Fucking toddlers think they're so great. Magic brains and nobody cares if they shit their pants. What a life. And my advice is perfectly reasonable for anybody at an intermediate state who's listening isn't quite up to the task of following along solely by ear, but who's reading isn't good enough to handle more complicated kanji.

I can do basic hirigana even if I would probably have to hump the pause button some to read subtitles, though I have yet to start on the kanji sections.
did you have anything in particular in mind mcjon?

This is basically me. I need to get back into Pimsleur because that seemed to be pretty good.

Honestly, at best anything you try to watch right now is just going to make you more used to hearing Japanese, you probably won't learn much of anything. I mean, you can still do it, but even stuff for babby is going to be made for authentic Yamato babbies, not faker gaijin babbies. Hard to make recommendations for total beginners. Best advice is that if it's not made for learners, make sure it's interesting, because that's all that's going to get you through it.

That thing never worked for me. Using Ixrec's guide and http://japaneseclass.jp/ has been pretty useful, though.

Due to the nature of things I've watched the most, I've become much more familiar with the accents of yakuza and various Japanese bad guys. Is this a bad thing?

I have Rosetta Stone but haven't picked it up in a while.
Subbed anime definitely have helped me recognize common phrases, though...I think. Maybe.

Why would it be sarcastic? I didn't say anything sarcastic.
